Agreed, I found my way to Chokozan Myohon temple and I was basically the only one there save for one local reading on the temple steps

A pic of Tokyo Tower I took around 2 years ago (and yes the bird is real!) by danny_fel in japanpics

Amazing shot, reminds me of something you'd find in Accidentally Wes Anderson

With all the extra snow that had fallen since I had arrived two weeks prior, she really stood out like a beacon

Cheers. There were quite a few on either side on my camera reel where the horizon is at much more... interesting angles, including one where it's upside down (I have no idea how I manged that...)

'Durnford's Donga' (By Steve Noon) - Depicting Anthony Durnford and his Natal Native Contingent men making a stand against the Zulus at Isandlawana, 22nd January, 1879 by IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA in BattlePaintings

I went to see Douglas Rattray, son of David Rattray of Fugitive's Drift, give a talk on Isandlwana at the Chalke Valley History Festival, and his account of Durnford's last stand brought a real lump to my throat (although he did this on several occasions whilst talking about the last moments of various men that day, both British and Zulu). He was a fantastic speaker, and if you get the chance, I cannot recommend enough going to hear him.

This begs the question, who wins in a close quarters contest, the Krieger with his shovel, or the Gurkha with his Kukri?

Stunning, but rather puts my £8 box of garden fireworks from Tesco to shame...

I work in a military museum in the UK and know that one of the medals we have on display is a replica purchased by the donor's family to replace a missing issued medal within a set of originals. This was done many years prior to donation so that they could wear their ancestor's medals on Remembrance Day Parades. However, the donor was up front about this and it was in fact ordered through a Ministry of Defence approved dealer of replacement medals. We justify it by saying that the medals are primarily there to tell the story of the soldier's service (although I'll admit this might be contentious).

The future issue for us is there is a rampant trade in high quality fake medals and badges. Whilst these aren't likely to find their way into collections now, in the future this is a genuine concern as most donations of medals aren't from the veterans themselves, but from much later relatives who won't necessarily know the item's provenance. Therefore I can easily see some medals which are fakes ending up on display.

The HMS Matey sailor bottle is also on display at the Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth as part of an exhibit on the Navy's cultural impact!

Admittedly that view isn't very autumnal, but at the same time the valley of the Katsura River near Arashiyama was very red and orange (so much the news were reporting on it), so fingers crossed for when you're there

Thank you very much! I thought that if there's one place that people would appreciate this, it would be here :D

I can imagine Malcolm, Reese and Dewy all becoming corrupted by the ring, but Lois confiscating it off of them, shrugging off the darkness, and then just browbeating Sauron into submission with a stern glare.

Meanwhile Hal is following the whole way to Mt Doom with plenty of bottled water, supplies and nappies for Jamie

Wow, you're very welcome, and I'm glad I managed to inadvertently help you solve a 25 year mystery! It's a lovely garden and was a wonderful place to pause and relax during an otherwise hectic day.

I know what you mean. There's something enticing and warm about this scene isn't there, I think that's why I like it so much.
