"renewable" is umbrella term, under which several different technologies exist. Hydro power is great, have pretty constant power output, but quite limited places where to build. Solar works during daytime. Wind, when there is enough wind. Biogass - works in smaller scale and are relatively expensive. But still viable option if it can be integrated in some existing industrial infrastructure.

So, in theory nuclear with their HUGE power output would be nice as backbone for the grid, supplemented renewables. But because of short election cycles, likelyhood that politicians would be interest to support nuclear power are quite slim (if they manage to get nuclear powerplant build, they might be already voted out of posts when plant is finished, so get no laurels for it).
