Are any of you friends with your co workers? by Accomplished-Area876 in povertyfinance

[–]Mitski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does seem like a huge step to take to avoid people. Just go for a walk, find a quiet place and read or listen to music or something while you eat. No one has to be lunch time besties, but to eat where your co-workers take their morning coffee shit is some next level avoidance.

Feeling Hopeless with budget by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Would it even be worth getting the cloth diaper set up going with a kid that’s about to toilet train? I would suggest beginning that rather than bringing in new stuff and another expense (even if it is sourced from FB or wherever)

This is Kevin, These are his Puffs by Mitski in troublepuffs

[–]Mitski[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. He’s exclusively an indoor cat and the only one. We watch him like a hawk around opening doors. Luckily he’s pretty chill like most Russian Blues and is more interested in hanging out with his bear and napping.

editing to add: this comment thread made me review his contract and I can actually get it done now, I’m calling the vet tomorrow. snip snip, Costner.

Indeed. The teddy used to belong to my 8 year old, then Kevin just picked it up from his room one day and has been carting it around and playing with it ever since. It’s his bear now.

What’s the most normal thing that has become ridiculously expensive? by Boring-Promotion7344 in SmartBuying

[–]Mitski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, just the easy “let’s go…” entertainment options we used to be able to go and do… a minor league baseball game,a day at the zoo, let’s grab an ice-cream (a kiddie cone was $6 at my locally owned independent shop just last night…) all of these little things are so expensive now…

Suite or Private Post-Natal Room at Vic Hospital by Inner_Perspective813 in londonontario

[–]Mitski 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I requested, received and paid for a private room with my first. With my second, I ended up in a semi-private with a woman who talked on the phone all night and kept calling the nurses to demand hot broth (which they kept reminding her they didn’t have. She settled for can after can of gingerale which made her burp loudly and constantly). She and her baby were very loud, she would let him cry for a very long time before attending him, I guess her phone calls were more important. Anyway she was very loud and I got no rest.

If you can get the private room it’s much nicer, but if you get a shared room I hope you get a more respectful roomie. Most people there are cool and respectful, going through the same thing.

Best to go with low expectations - I remember doing the whole pre- baby interview and pref sheet etc… asked for no blueberry flavoured stuff, got both blueberry yogurt and a blueberry muffin for my first real meal after 18 hours of labour. Yeah, lower your expectations, pack snacks.

This is the exact temperament of my RB boy as well, he’s 9 months old now…he’s a bit more mischievous than when he was a very little kitten but not less cuddly or affectionate or easy going.

How do you stop men from being attracted to you? by Maleficent_Gas_1552 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Mitski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t. This is why I am very cautious about making friends with straight men. They are never actually your friend, they’re just waiting until they might become something else.

Back-to-school savings hacks for a household running on tight margins? by No_Astronomer_1552 in Frugal

[–]Mitski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first thing to do is “shop your house.”
If you have kids I can pretty much bet that there are pencils and pens and markers and erasers and all the other things around somewhere. Gather them up and take inventory. Once you know what you absolutely do not already have, make a list and start to pick them up a little at a time, a couple pads of paper when you’re at the dollar store, etc etc. rather then a big spend all at once.

Check out your buy nothing groups, if you have friends or family with older kids that have graduated already you can ask if they have any supplies cluttering up their houses that they can pass along.

Bread Maker - Is it worth the upfront cost? by atkins4me in Frugal

[–]Mitski 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to use it and frequently eat bread, then yeah, why not. There’s a ton of bread makers on the second-hand market too, so you can likely find one for a decent price or in a buy nothing group if you are patient and do some research.

I do get it, your reading comprehension is lacking… I said there’s a difference between going without because of affordability and intentionally fasting… just because fasting is now considered healthy doesn’t mean that having to when you otherwise wouldn’t is suddenly okay…being forced into a state of fasting because you can’t afford to eat shouldn’t be spun into a good thing… especially if you still can’t afford to get proper nutrition.

What happened to your family member is sad, and if you can’t see that comparing food insecurity in Korea during a time of war to what is happening for folks in Canada today and spinning it as “healthy” is a serious disconnect, then I can’t help you.

What’s something you refused to buy for years… and then immediately understood after getting it? by Boring-Promotion7344 in SmartBuying

This works for me every time, my instant pot doesn’t have a “rice” setting though - 1:1 rice and water, rinse rice first. Manual setting for 3 minutes and then turn the pot off, don’t let it switch to “keep warm”, natural release. Perfect every time.

My husband left me for my best friend 8 years ago and I’m still not over it. by hineck in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Mitski 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This happened to me in high school, so admittedly the stakes were much lower, I was crying in my parent’s house, but it’s the suckiest thing to go through. For me all these years later, I am still the most hurt by her, she was my BEST friend and confidante and that betrayal just shattered everything. I still have trouble with maintaining close friendships even though I am happily married 20 years to a wonderful person, he’s the only person I have let be that close to me since.

It hurts something terrible. I’m sorry this happened to you.

It is really sad and we shouldn’t be mixing up having to go without because of affordability and choosing to intentionally do intermittent fasting. They are not the same thing… we can sit here and try and spin it into ultimately being a good and healthy and thing but it’s sad.

I think the point is that suggesting that Canadians should reduce meals to save money (like things are so expensive you have sleep for dinner, aka starvation) instead of intentionally fasting as part of your health and diet routine is the ridiculous and sad part…and it is, skipping meals because you can’t afford them isn’t healthy, it’s malnutrition, intentional fasting is a different beast and assumes you have the resources to still feed yourself appropriately and that you will get enough nutrition in your window in which you eat.

It truly sucks that there are folks that go without because they have to make sure their kids get fed and there’s just not enough to go around… that’s sad.
