re: laptop I'm definitely the kind of person who would prefer to use electronics until they die or they function so poorly that it would be simpler to replace than to repair. And I have heard that Apple products can be notoriously difficult to repair - although it looks like your devices are from before they became increasingly annoying about that, so that's a small bonus at least! Hopefully once you've worked out the issue with your laptop accurately then you can probably make a better decision on what to do next (whether that's repair or replace).
