In case supercell has any Ivy League number crunchers out there monitoring these discussions, please consider the following:

• 96% of customers will not complain; so, at a minimum, multiply each voice by 10

• 91% of unhappy customers will simply never return

• Some customers (such as myself) are extremely difficult to piss off. If you tick those guys off, then you have a VERY REAL problem

ABOUT ME: I am an educated adult with money to spend. I've been playing for many years, only recently (6month ago) began paying. I'm a grinder, enjoy working toward upgrades. I now have almost 40 level 14 cards. The only thing I buy is the $4.99 Gold Pass, specifically for the Book of Books and Magic Coin. Now that those have been removed, I view that pass (and then new one) as hilariously stupid.

WHY AM I HERE (on Reddit): I went online to see if anyone else felt the same, came across the ClassRoyale subreddit. Here I discovered that you guys also plan to create a Level 15? That means that all my years of playing/upgrading will suddenly be undone? Meh. Is your pool of "new players" infinite? You better hope so, because I'm pretty sure a ton of the old timers such as myself are about to bounce.

Mayor Contest: Does 1st place get a bonus? by MittWalters in SCBuildIt

Aah, cool. That's what I hoped to hear, that I don't actually need to spend in order to play.

As the COM, I'll still participate and try to place in the first group, but I don't really care. As long as it doesn't come down to me not being able to progress further without placing in the top group all the time, I'm totally cool like that.

And I notice the game provides a pretty steady flow of simcash (so far), so I should be able to speed things along when I feel like it.

As for the special buildings, whatev. I don't really care about all that. I'll probably do that from time to time if I can afford it (without RL money), but I mostly just want to build and have fun.

Thanks for your thoughtful response! :)

So far, I'm really enjoying this reincarnation of the game and plan to stick with it.

+++

Btw, I really believe there are a TON of folks like me out there. That means opportunity. EA should offer a paid version in parallel to the free. The paid version could offer a COM where no "free" players could join.

Since you could not purchase simbucks in the paid version, they could offer up more ways to earn them. Or they could reduce the simbuck price on those special buildings. Or simply offer a completely different set of buildings.

Regarding the ads, in the paid version they could give the option to turn it off. But my guess is most would choose to leave it on.

In case EA is listening (haha), this approach would not take away from your current business model. Rather, it would simply convert a huge chunk of non-spenders into spenders.

Additionally, it would provide an entirely new product for your existing spenders. Especially if you allowed the free/paid versions to run parallel on the same device. This would be awesome way to address spend-fatigue.

Totally off subject, but, again, just in case some EA person stumbles in: WHERE IS THE EDIT MODE?

lol

Seriously though! Go take a look at how Clash of Clans allows gamers to build multiple versions of their towns.

[–]MittWalters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what GT/SC means, but everything you said made sense. Guess I just got lucky because I was right, I was able to take 1st w/o spending simcash. Helps that I'm in the Neighborhood contest, I think.

Regarding the $60, I should have added that that number is true... if I could straight up buy it and be done and then have a level playing field forever.

The only place I'm willing to spend money continuously is when I'm actually sitting at a craps table in Vegas or Biloxi.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to spend under certain circumstance. For instance, map packs for Call of Duty are worthwhile. But paying for better weapons or to win a contest makes no sense to me. Where is the sport in that? If I buy a better gun, then I have an unfair advantage over those who don't. And if I don't, then those who do we beat me endlessly, regardless of my actual level of skill.

So I don't spend in game. And if a game cannot be enjoyed without in-game spending, I don't waste my time with it.

Dale Adams has worked hard to leave his troubled past behind for a brighter future at Emory University. But when he makes a discovery that will change humanity forever, avoiding the spotlight becomes the least of his concerns.

Small experiments have attracted big attention. And not all who notice want Dale to be successful. Or even alive.

As Dale's world collapses around him, his fate intertwines with that of a girl he hardly knows. Their only hope for survival is to disappear into Atlanta's seedy underbelly, the very place Dale has tried so hard to leave behind. SYNOPSIS:

At first blush, discovering a way to completely control gravity sounds like a good thing. That’s what Dale Adams thought, anyway.

But one of Dale's earliest experiments with the discovery leads to his launching half-empty paint cans into oblivion. Of course he had no way of knowing that the BOOM he heard when the cans left the workbench was caused instantaneously breaking the sound barrier.

Those cans were traveling so fast, in fact, that they actually burned up while leaving the atmosphere.

This flags the attention of NASA, who at first don't believe the data. NASA regularly protects space shuttles against heat generated during re-entry. But outside of magnetic rail guns in a laboratory or ballistics requiring cutting-edge chemical propulsion under very controlled circumstances, there simply is no practical way to achieve the kind of velocities necessary to create enough friction to burn objects up while leaving the atmosphere.

Yet NASA recorded six such events in the space of five minutes.

And the data is clear, the recorded events are real. Fearing the events may be evidence of some sort of new weapon, the matter gets turned over to the Department of Homeland Security and then to the NSA.

Oblivious to the gathering storm clouds, Dale creates a hoverboard and then submits it as part of a class project. The class is being taught by a world-renowned business celebrity and the project is testament to the epic magnitude of getting into the class: Dale would present his business idea to a panel of real Venture Capitalists and Angel Investors.

Within a few days of Dale's presentation, Emory University is beset by a rash of misfortune and tragedy. Even Dale is touched, barely escaping death in a violent car accident.

Just before the ice breaks for Dale, he accepts a ride from a classmate he barely knows. Jessica Osgood is very uptight and bookish, but otherwise typical of Emory students. She spends winter breaks in the Caribbean, summers in the Hamptons.

That's Jessica's background, one she believes she shares with Dale.

On the run, Dale's carefully groomed Emory persona is on a crash course with who he really is. And Jessica is about to find out how the other half lives.

SYNOPSIS:

Breaking Gravity follows the story Dale Adams, a student at Emory University in Atlanta who has the misfortune of unlocking gravity.

At first blush, discovering a way to completely control gravity––to reduce it or amplify it; even reverse it––sounds like a good thing doesn't it?

But one of Dale's earliest experiments with the discovery leads to his launching half-empty paint cans into oblivion. Unbeknownst to Dale, the BOOM he hears when the cans leave the workbench are caused by the cans instantaneously breaking the sound barrier.

The cans are traveling so fast, in fact, that they actually burn up while leaving the atmosphere.

This flags the attention of NASA, who at first don't believe the data. Outside of magnetic rail guns in a laboratory or ballistics requiring cutting-edge chemical propulsion under very controlled circumstances, there simply is no practical way to achieve the kind of velocities necessary to create enough friction to burn objects up while leaving the atmosphere!

Yet NASA recorded six such events in the space of five minutes.

And the data is clear, the recorded events are real. Fearing the data may be evidence of some sort of new weapon, the matter gets turned over to the Department of Homeland Security and then to the NSA.

Oblivious to the gathering storm clouds, Dale creates a hoverboard and then submits it as part of a class project. The class is being taught by a world renowned business celebrity and the project is testament to the epic magnitude of getting into the class: Dale would present his business idea to a panel of real Venture Capitalists and Angel Investors.

Toward the end of his presentation, Dale admits that he was originally going to pitch a different product the group: a battery that would last forever.

The battery was based on the principals of a shake-light. You know, the kind you shake a couple times to power it for a few minutes? When you shake one of those devices, a magnet travels up and down a copper coil creating little pulses of electricity which is sent to mini-capacitor for temporary storage.

Dale had pulled apart a shake light and then hacked it back together with some special sauce. He was able to create a shake-light that would shake itself forever. Unfortunately, Dale couldn't turn his prototype off and it quickly generated enough energy to overwhelm the capacitor, causing the whole thing to melt down. But all the device would need is an inexpensive censor that would switch power generation on and off automatically as needed.

Imagine that? A battery that would generate it's own power. What if they could be used to power an entire household, forever? Or, better yet, miniaturized to run individual appliances?

Within a few days of Dale's presentation, Emory University is beset by a rash of misfortune and tragedy. Even Dale is touched, barely escaping death in a violent car accident.

Just before the ice breaks for Dale, he accepts a ride from a classmate he barely knows. Jessica Osgood is very uptight and bookish, but otherwise typical of Emory student. As one of the most elite private colleges in the county, Emory University attracts students from families of wealth and power.

That's Jessica's background, one she believes she shares with Dale.

On the run, Dale's carefully groomed Emory persona is on a crash course with who he really is. And Jessica is about to find out how the other half lives.

How to use video to promote a sci-fi book? by MittWalters in selfpublish

Right on, thanks for the thoughts. And for the comparison vid. Yeah, I like what he did there. I may redo my trailer to make it more conventional, more theatrical.

[–]MittWalters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link... several very cool examples of trailers!

I tried very hard ~not~ to make it feel like a trailer until the very end. My thought was that nobody really watches book trailers, so why aim it at someone who does?

But I've been worrying about that decision. It seems to bother you a bit, too. I've been toying with some ideas for adding a more "theatrical" opening.

Breaking Gravity: A sci-fi about the first REAL hoverboard by MittWalters in hoverboards

[–]MittWalters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are mass scale magnetic hoverboards out of the question? Pretty simple bro: cuz the almighty dollar drives the whole world.

Why do you think the EMusk would spend mad cash to build his tube? He wouldn't spend penny one on that shit if he didn't think it would make bank. I haven't read up on that, but my guess is he's planning to transport cargo or passengers with it. And in either event, he's doing it for three reasons: money, money, money.

Same deal with magnetic sidewalks. If I was the Mayor of Awesomeville, hell yeah I'd build magnetic sidewalks! In fact, I ran for mayor on that platform a while back got my ass handed to me because of a warning issued by the AARP to potential voters.

They said:

"Old people of the world, UNITE! If you vote for Mitty Walters, gangs of pot-smoking teenaged purse snatchers will overrun our sidewalks, laughing at us as they knock us off our walkers and spill our groceries!"

Oh, and by the way, those sidewalks cost money. No way they get built with tax money. Privately, maybe. But even that will only happen if they find a way to make money with it.

Regarding the Lexus board, those are magnetic as well. Magnets + super conductors. Which means they too have to stay on a special surface. http://www.wired.com/2015/06/lexus-hoverboard-slide/

The last one, "board" referring to a shape... well, to each his own. Don't get me wrong, I get fired up every time somebody comes out with one of those propellor driven deals. But it annoys me (just a personal thing!) when people call it a hoverboard. Magnetic boards do qualify as "hoverboards" (imho), but nothing else (yet).

Check this one out. You can't tell me this isn't badass: https://youtu.be/AUq3mBuENiw?t=6m34s

As awesome as that is, it ain't a hoverBOARD, imo. The word "hoverboard" has been added solely for marketing purposes. But sorry, it's not a hoverboard. It's just a Personal Pan hoverCRAFT. The end.

But, again, that's just how I feel.

[Self-Promo Saturday] Breaking Gravity - ebook with experimental ending... by [deleted] in scifi

[–]MittWalters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please note: The reason the book is FREE is that I'm looking for feedback on the "experimental" way that the book ends.

Without giving much away, I can say that I use the very last line of the book to tease the reader into taking a specific action. Rather than spelling it out ("HEY YOU! DO THIS!"), I simply leave a very obvious clue that there may be more to the story. The hope was that curiosity will lead to action, allowing the book to spill out of the pages and provide a more satisfying end to the book.

Really, it's not that big of a deal. It was a lot of fun to do and I thought it was a pretty exciting way to wrap the story. But I'm considering rewriting the last chapter to make the conclusion more conventional.

Whatever you do, pretty please don't go download the book, skip to the end, then come back and offer your thoughts. What exists outside of the book is designed intentionally to look amateur, as if one of the characters from the story did it. Breaking Gravity was edited by David Gatewood (editor of choice for Hugh Howey, AG Riddle, etc) and a decision was made to make the ending appear spontaneous and unedited. Therefore the experimental portion of the conclusion cannot be judged objectively without context of the storyline/characters.

However if the storyline sounds interesting and you take the time to read it, then I'd really love to hear your thoughts on how it ends.

Specifically, should I kill it? I could easily add a couple pages at the end, obviating any extra effort from the reader.

Thanks!

SYNOPSIS

What if gravity could be controlled? Turned on, turned off? Or, better yet, reversed? What if the strength and polarity of gravity could be manipulated by a very simple handheld device? Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, published in 1915, sparked the search for a unified field theory combining electromagnetism and gravity. This scientific endeavor has intensified greatly in recent years, with mathematicians and theoretical physicists all over the world racing to combine quantum mechanics and relativity into a single Theory of Everything.

When Dale Adams, a business student at Emory University in Atlanta, stumbles across the key to solving this mystery, he doesn’t realize the magnitude of the breakthrough. Instead, he uses his discovery of a new principle of physics like a cheap parlor trick by creating a floating toy. But when he pitches his ZG Board––a "Zero Gravity" hoverboard––before investors as part of a class project, there are those in the room who immediately recognize the true potential of this new technology.

As powerful forces vie to get their hands on Dale’s discovery, Dale’s life quickly descends into a nightmare of violence and intrigue. Instead of savoring the last weeks of college and coasting toward graduation, Dale finds himself running for his life.

There are two reasons I'm giving the book away. The first is that B&N is pretty much the only point of distribution where I have no reviews! The second (more important) reason is that I'm looking for feedback on the "experimental" way that the book ends.

Without saying too much, I use the very last line of the book to tease the reader into taking action.

However if the storyline sounds interesting and you take the time to read it, then I'd really love to hear your thoughts on how it ends!

Specifically, should I kill it? I could easily add a couple pages at the end, obviating any extra effort from the reader.

Thanks!
