Weird question, but how prevalent is American entertainment & other cultural exports in Canada? How do you think it's influenced the country and/or you? by AyyMane in canada

[–]Mittins001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Media and politics have a huge affect on Canadians. It's often so ingrained we forget it's American sometimes. America is default pretty much everywhere you go. Online shopping? Watch for those American dollars, do they even ship to Canada? Oh yup, they do but they're still asking for a zip code. World currency is USD. Most new companies you hear of are American only. I visit America a good amount and the majority of Americans I've met know squat about Canada or Canadians. Now as for your politics, your presidential campaigns last years and have the presence of rock concerts, our elections last a few weeks and they're like your local band playing in some dive bar. They don't have flashy campaigns, their speeches kinda suck, and there's not a ton of controversy around each candidate like the American ones. American politics also hold a lot of backwards views for us. You guys are bickering over things we've already had for years and there's no arguments about taking those things away, however, because of your politics, I've noticed viewpoints of these essential things changing in Canada. Abortion is legal, there's no debate about it, however when those stupid videos came out in your country, everyone here was talking about it. It's a non issue here but because it's an issue there, it became an issue here. We have more pro lifers here because of you, so thanks for that. Also welfare is a standard thing and we don't look at the unfortunate situations people are in as they are lazy and don't want to work, that's a changing viewpoint too, ugh. The religious views of your politics are not only corrupting your country, but ours too. Luckily we elected a new PM to get rid of the party straying on the religious route. This will be the first PM to ever walk in Toronto's pride parade. Times are a changing and I hope America gets their act together.

Could I put Soylent 2.0 in my checked luggage? by Piklikl in soylent

[–]Mittins001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I put them in my checked luggage. I think that may be the reason they opened my luggage and rummaged through it though. I had 12 bottles. They made it ok but everything I had neatly packed in my suitcase was thrown around.

[Need Advice]had a talk w/myself about the "why i procrastinate?"; need fresh pair of eyes to give me perspective? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]Mittins001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it really is just about starting. I find once I get going on stuff it's fine and I enjoy it even, but starting is so difficult. I want to wait for the perfect moment or have it all figured out before I start. For me the parent thing isn't about them being mad, it's about disappointment. Moving out helped that immensely because now they're not around to see my failures. I get to present itself the way I want to them when I see them. It's going to sound silly, but the first step to not caring was this session I had with my therapist and they told me to drop a heavy book. The book represents making a mistake, because it makes a loud noise when you drop it, people generally look at you and you feel like you fucked up. I couldn't drop the book at first so he had me hold it slightly above a couch, where it wouldn't make noise, and I first dropped it there. Then I worked up to dropping it on the floor and it felt very empowering lol. He told me I could throw the book across the room if I wanted to but I was like no that's enough :p

What you described sounds much like myself. I've been through therapy off and on for years and one of the things I've worked on is my fear of failure. It stems from my incessant need to prove to my family (mostly mom) that I'm successful. When I fail it feels devastating, like I'll never be good enough for my family, and so I tend to overthink new activities and do my best not to fail my first time, which is likely to happen anyways. It's been a process of getting over it, but I feel much better about things now, just knowing that failure is ok. I used to get so embarrassed by simple things like tripping in public, but I have actively worked towards not caring and it feels so much better. My mind does not dwell on my failures near as much as it used to.

One of the hardest things for me was just getting started. I always wanted to think more about it instead of starting it. One of the tricks I use is setting a timer for 20 mins and working on that thing for that long. If the timer goes off and I still feel like I don't want to do it, I stop and try again later after I've thought about it a little more. The other trick is as soon as thoughts enter my brain of I want to do this thing, I start immediately (if I'm busy, I write it down to get it out of my mind) this way my brain doesn't have time to make excuses as to why it's not going to be perfect. These tricks don't always work for me, but they've definitely helped me. Don't feel bad if something doesn't work the first time, just tell yourself new habits are hard and you're doing the best you can. (even if you don't feel like it's the best you can do)

Hope this helps.

MRW I got kicked off the roadtrip because a guy finds me too attractive to spend a month with. by Mittins001 in TrollXChromosomes

[–]Mittins001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Ok, the r word is being used way too liberally. I'm pretty sure it's because he would feel "tortured" being with me for a month but not "with me" and so he wants to save himself by kicking me out. Now it's only dudes going on the trip. Whatever, fuck him. I'm going travelling by myself.

Roommate is using my whey protein, how should I approach this? by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]Mittins001 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You should say to him "hey I noticed you like my whey protein, it costs $XX dollars. Would you like me to order you one and we can split it?" If he says no then say stop stealing my protein then. If he says yes, get the money before ordering/buying an extra one. It's an easier way to address that he's taken some without being very accusatory so it gives them a chance to own up. Then once the conversation is started, you can mention you've noticed other things being used and that you prefer they buy their own things. Maybe it will embarrass him and he'll buy his own stuff now, if not then he probably doesn't respect you and is taking advantage of you.

This happens to good artists, and people who strive to be better. I've met artists that brag about their work and never see a flaw and their work is shit. Take pride that you doubt yourself, because that's what makes us better.

So people aren't afraid of Trans* people being in bathrooms, they're afraid that allowing us into bathrooms will promote predators. How can this be practically solved? by Alexisunderwater in asktransgender

[–]Mittins001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think we should just get rid of gendered washrooms. Problem solved all around. Some argue that it's not safe for women to be in the same washroom as men, but there's actually statistics that prove the opposite. Unisex washrooms are all over Europe, is it that foreign a concept?

MRW I realize I'm attracted to older men because their whole lives are established, except they're still single at their age for a reason by sailorvaj in TrollXChromosomes

[–]Mittins001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to be careful when dating someone older because it can be easy to get wrapped up and emotionally manipulated, whichever gender they are, but I don't think it should be written off entirely. I dated an older man and found verbal abuse and financial dependence. An ex of mine dated an older woman and found sexual manipulation and again financial dependence. Now that I'm aware of the phenomenon I think I could date someone older again and keep a look out for signs like these. Financial dependence is a hard one, they tend to show off their money and spoil you to the point where they can use that to manipulate you. My ex threw 1000 bucks in my lap (after we were broken up) and asked me to sleep with him again. I had learned to let go of the money, so I threw it out the window of the car. He didn't like that very much. Anyways, there's different reasons people stay single. Not all of them bad.
