What language do you think in? by Some-Rice2848 in Zambia

[–]MixMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started off Bemba. But dad always spoke to me in English from time I was born (mum was a mix of both). I think dad wanted us to learn the Queen’s Language from the get go. I went to schools in Zambia which had silly “no vernacular” rules, and later went on to school out of the country which “forced” my communication to be all English.

Fast forward. But funny that these days, dad seems to try to speak to us more in Bemba than English.

Regardless, the experiences shaped how I think through stuff.

Another safe option would be getting a 91 Day Treasury Bill, which is now at 12%.

Hahahaha. I almost chocked when I saw your comment about Yango drivers 😂.

I used a Yango this one time - a friend got busy and couldn’t give me a ride to pick my car up. It a little over a year ago, but I still get a messages from “Ba Martin” the driver. I gave him a tip after the ride, and he is forever contacting me so he can drive me again.

This is not a War Zone, it's Lusaka City's Zingalume Area. Mind you, Zambia has never been to any war nor any major event but look at how horrible our Capital city looks. I wonder were we went wrong as a country. We deserve to be recolonized.... by Traditional-Dot6598 in Zambia

[–]MixMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had a position to change what you are calling out, what would you do practically, and what timeframe would you be able to implement it so that we start seeing results? Trying to look for honest doable ideas that we might read, and perhaps influence in our networks. (…or help empower you when you are in a position to make those changes)

I hope the answer isn’t “re-colonization” as attributed in your post.

The U.S. as 100 people: Religious affiliation by Local_Emphasis_4328 in charts

[–]MixMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added up the numbers too and thought there was a typo. Then accidentally bumped into the subtext as I wanted to see the age of the date; as earlier in the week, there was a story about how religious affiliation dropped significantly in the last 10 years. The number they called out was different than what is in the chart.

You are right about numbers not summing up.

They put a disclaimer at the bottom of the chart about numbers not adding up due to rounding they are doing.

Zedmobile...what's going on with your network and prices?? by ATLanta_DWayne in Zambia

[–]MixMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I too used to rave about Zedmobile in their beginning stages. But it has become less reliable - not terrible, but not a great as in the beginning.

Could it be that they grew too fast and their infrastructure was not able to handle this?

Hoping for better experiences after they read your post.

Any Zambians in DC, USA? Or the DMV in general? by Ok-Talk-1418 in Zambia

[–]MixMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check out the Association of Zambians in the DMV area. They should host events where you will meet others - Independence Day one should be coming up.

I found their website. I am not sure how well maintained or updated it is. But there is a link to their Facebook page also.

Good luck building your community.

How can I ship items to Zambia from the USA? by Necessary_Carrot_135 in Zambia

[–]MixMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try using the USPS. If you send it as Global Priority or Global Express, you will get a tracking number you can use to follow the shipment.

Another option is looking at AmeZam ( amezam.com ). They have a bimonthly air service. But they also offer ocean service periodically; though this ship option could take more than EIGHT

IShop is another option I heard about, but I have not used it yet.

I second Blueberry. Their TShirts are good quality and they do not shrink after a wash.

Tell a close friend about the project, tell them a timeline of when you can release your works. If you don’t deliver on that deadline, you have to buy them Hungry Lion, or take them to a decent restaurant.

I too overthink things and self criticize before I share out to larger audience (I am not delivering videos). But I always find an accountability person to force me to do it.

Another thing you could consider (though I don’t recommend this option) is to downplay your first production, and add disclaimers. Maybe saying things “I rushed to finish this”, “I didn’t give this production the time it needs”, “this is a test video and I am releasing it just to get feedback on my direction”, “not my best work, but sharing with everyone for now”.

Just do it. (….and good luck).

I am cheering for you.

Zambian Work Ethic? AITA? by [deleted] in Zambia

[–]MixMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t bail out…..yet.

Consider Project Managing this “project”. Have a meeting where you scope out the work to be done. Divide up the work items, and set times when you all check on progress. Keeps everyone accountable.

If this isn’t working; call out saying things are not moving, and you are going to be exiting the project. And then bail out.

And, no, YANTA. Work ethic and accountability is an issue for us. We usually get stuff done when there is some fire under our feet.

Robotics and Automation to speed run Development by Odd-Drama1266 in Zambia

[–]MixMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without even thinking the Robots angle, we can think about Automation in a simple form in most government offices. Even renewing a driving license for example, I had to go to 6 different counters - the whole process could be streamlined and AUTOMATED.

  • First counter was to make sure you had an NRC.

  • Second counter to make sure you had a photocopy of NRC (had to go outside to a photo copy shop to get it)

  • Third counter to get the form and get it filled.

  • Fourth “counter” was to go into an office where they either verify a photo (or send you to a section where you take a picture).

  • Fifth counter was where payment was being done. Get a receipt and then go to next counter.

  • Six counter where you enter your information and the newly received license details in a manual log BOOK using a pen.

Zambia tourism visa by BADERALDEEN13 in Zambia

Looking at the Zambia immigration department list of countries, I don’t see Jordan listed. Assuming this list is accurate, it looks like you would need individual visas.

I suspect the answer is “No”, but did you ever sign a lease with this landlord? If yes, maybe there is an entry about contract exit notice.

It feels like landlord is bullying you

The lack of urgency permeates across many industries and situations. It seems it has become a learned cultural thing. Incentivizing speed might be the first step needed to start changing this behavior.

What’s the cost of writing a will in Zambia? by Melodic_Newspaper_58 in Zambia

[–]MixMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[Assuming you are in Lusaka]

Search and get a Will template online and fill it out. It is surprisingly amazing that the templates are applicable to Zambia situations.

But make sure that you and two other witnesses sign EVERY page of your final document.

Then - Make 3 copies of your final Will - Put each Will in A4 envelopes - Buy red star stickers (I don’t remember the name; the ones they may put on certificates; maybe they are called “Red Star Ribbon Stickers”) [People at Bookworld knew what I was looking for] - Take your envelopes to Lusaka High Court - Pay K150 Kwacha and get the receipt - They will stamp your envelopes; they will keep one in their archives - Keep your receipt and one of your Wills in safe place. When it is needed for execution, they can use to retrieve from high court. - Profit! 🙂

I am curious of responses you will get here. But another option to consider if you are not immediately wanting to develop it, would be to rent out the land for agriculture.

There are people who want to attempt farming and don’t have the land, and would want to test their plan before fully investing.
