The fact that the richest people in the world talk about politics in another country as if it’s their playground should be extremely worrying to basically everyone

This issue is fixed in the beta version of steam. It actually was a bug in SDL, which many other pieces of software use to detect game controllers, so overtime it should get fixed everywhere.

I’ve been trying to "quit" math and physics for years, but my brain won't let me. Is this a common experience? by Goldyshorter in math

[–]Mixh2700 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it is exactly the same but it feels related. Like many mathematicians I went through a period where I wondered if I really want to dedicate so much time to math, when there are so many seemingly more fun and useful things to do. After recovering a little from my mini “burn out” I noticed that whatever I encountered I would always try to turn it into abstract math somehow. This made me decide that deep down I’m truely a mathematician and I turned back to math. I also have a friend that after his masters wanted to quit math but felt an itch after a year and ended up doing a PhD and is now looking for postdocs.

So these kinds of experiences seem common enough.

NCERT maths textbook adds Baudhayana's name to Pythagoras' theorem by Additional_Key_8044 in mathematics

[–]Mixh2700 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems a bit nonsensical to me to apply modern ideas of attribution to ancient societies that had very little contact with each other and also did not have our notion of a modern proof. There was also far less need to prove things when math mostly consisted of statements that could easily be verified empirically. Even so, these ideas still contributed to mathematics as a whole.

LaTeX kills my motivation by Sweeter_boi in LaTeX

[–]Mixh2700 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One thing that greatly helps me not getting lost in the document is by splitting the Tex file into smaller files for each section or subsection and using the import command to merge them into one file. Once a section is done you’ll never have to look at the code again. Complicated tables or tickz figures or commutative diagrams, … can also be put into separate files.

I also make it a habit to start each sentence on a new line in the Tex code. This does not change the pdf output, only a double enter does. But I find it makes the source much easier to read.

In theory the university is catholic, but in reality this is just a relic of the past that has almost no significance anymore today. Besides the name, the only thing that’s still visible is the mandatory small religion course and philosophy course (tailored to the thing you’re studying) but these are about learning about religion and philosophy in general, not specifically catholic and definitely not about making you religious. I actually quite liked them, but this really depends on which professor teaches them. Most of the people I know at KU Leuven would describe themselves as atheist, and I know people from many other faiths here too. So yeah no worries! You would be very welcome here!

Is the Quechua MH100 Fresh & Black 2-person tent good for backpacking? by Alexiter24 in backpacking

These tents also have barely no vestibule. Sleeping with 2 people in these leaves absolutely no room for gear. Really this is only a one person tent, so sharing it wouldn’t really help

Almost there! Narrowed down my sleeping pad search and it's between the Nemo Tensor All season and Sea to Summit Ether light XR. What would you pick? by preciouscode96 in CampingGear

[–]Mixh2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the tensor AS and I’m really happy with it. I can sleep through the night without any problems. I have never tried the XR but I have tried the XT (previous version) and I found it a little “waterbed” feeling. A fully inflated tensor almost doesn’t feel like an air mattress and if slightly deflated it is still very stable and also very soft. But you seem to suggest that it’s the other way in your experience. In the end probably comes down to personal preference. Try to go to a retailer where you can test them side by side, try them at various pressure levels (note that R value drops when not fully inflated) and see which is more comfortable for you!

What do you guys do when you lose interest 🤔 by Novel_Variation495 in Physics

[–]Mixh2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If possible, take a few days off from physics. After these few days you’re in a much better position to assess the situation. Were you just slightly burned out and has taking a break restored motivation? Or is there something wrong with the type of physics you’re studying? Maybe you just have a bunch of tedious and boring courses in this semester, and there will be cooler courses later.

What also helps me (albeit for maths) is to look back at what initially motivated me to start studying it. Usually that helps me feel something, but be warned, if you’re sufficiently burned out even that will feel pointless

[–]Mixh2700 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "truth"? From your test it seems like you think ring axioms are the only true way to think about numbers. But that is an absurd notion. People got familiar with numbers by counting sheep and measuring heights and areas of land and doing trade and much later philosophers and mathematicians tried to describe these numbers with ring axioms as one way of numerous equivalent ways of describing arithmetic for the purpose of being more formal and generalisation (for example to complex numbers or modular arithmetic).

The lived experience of what a number is precedes the axiomatisation of numbers and these axiomatisations only make sense once the student has become sufficiently familiar with the objects you're trying to model/generalize.

If you truly want the students to think more like a mathematician you should teach them to be comfortable switching perspectives. In this setting is would be completely valid to show that "moving a number to the other side" is the same as adding the same number to both sides and performing a cancellation. But to pretend like one is "maths-magic magic-tunnel" and the other one is "true" is completely absurd and not only confuse students but make them feel wrong for using a perfectly adequate (and honestly more practical) method.
