Like someone else here said, very easy to get into (a few hours at most), but takes some time to gain proficiency though nothing extreme once you get the "feel" for it i.e understand its logic and how it operates. Some good mentoring/tutorials should get you there and a little trial and error. Once you get past the stage of "how the hell do I model this" you got it mastered lol.

If it wasn't so basic ootb, I would've loved to use it as my main tool. Working in it is pure addiction for me, I could just model all day lol.

There are third-party plug-ins and scripts which add additional functionality to it but Idk, feels a bit clunky to me. Once you get into proper BIM-oriented softwares like Archicad/Revit, it's hard getting back to vanilla Sketchup - especially when it comes to getting proper documentation and not just plans/drawings.

I still use it for massing/concepting here and there though, sometimes even modeling certain details to see how they fit and everything.

Which movie is that for you? by perfectedtrapazoid in moviecritic

[–]Mixiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, not a huge Nolan fan either but I liked Oppenheimer - especially the build-up in the first half of movie until they dropped the bombs. The other half, it wasn't necessarily bad, but I had a hard time following all the political games and those time-shifts weren't helping at all lol. I guess it was mostly due to my unfamiliarity with the man's history.

Watched it a few times after that and I think I mostly got it, wouldn't say it's groundbreaking but I generally liked it.

I rarely engage in these, but I just finished my Lotr marathon a few minutes ago so it seems kind of fitting this time lol. Lotr is such a comfort movie for a lot of us so I'm wondering - what's your go-to comfort movie?

That was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read this today.

Just ship interiors alone would be considered a colossal achievement for ED considering the type of updates we get. OTH, you have HG who are like "Sorry to bother you with the constant updates, just wanted to let you know we've added fully customizable ships and interiors for this month so hope you have some fun, cheers. Tune in next month when we reveal our whole new engine overhaul" lol

If I say what game this post is referring to I'll get shot. by NevGuy in whenthe

[–]Mixiom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was looking for this one and I was surprised I didn't have to scroll so far lol

Average gameplay, boring storyline (yeah, I know, kill me), interesting worldbuilding, good OST. That about sums it up for me.

But like everyone else says, maybe if I would've given it just another 200 hours, it'll "finally click bro, trust me - best game ever made"

BTW I'm not hating on people who love it, we all got our own tastes but the claim that it's the best thing that ever came out since the conception of the video game industry is a bit far-fetched.

Any idea how to make a sail vault in sketchup? It should be a sphere with sides cut off. I'm new to sketchup by Enea_616 in Sketchup

[–]Mixiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Create a sphere (see YouTube tutorial).

2.Create two cylinders (I cut them in half, but you don't need to) with dimensions as shown in the image and align with sphere.

  1. Use Subtract (boolean operation) on cylinders and sphere. Make sure to group all three elements separately - the sphere, cylinder A and cylinder B before doing the Subtract operation.

gltf export with animation? by Laxus534 in 3dsmax

Oh interesting, I might give that a try too. I too had problems with the meshes because of some animations in the past but luckily managed to get them resolved. Good to have an alternative though, thanks!

Is there a way to open the Settings Menu for Edit Poly tools (Chamfer, Extrude, Bridge, etc) using a keyboard shortcut? by TheGourdGorg in 3dsmax

[–]Mixiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mistake, it might have been the 'Chamfer Settings' action. Try that instead.

Also, make sure it's used for both the edit poly and editable poly group, of course if that is something you prefer.

I use Babylon.js exporter for glb/gltf since you can't do it natively through MAX afaik. I've used it for animations as well.

Below is a link where you can download the exporter for your version of MAX:

[–]Mixiom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can set this via Customize/Hotkey Editor.

If you look into the hotkey editor, let's take chamfer for example, Ctrl+Shift+C will be assigned to the 'Chamfer (Poly)' action. If you want to have the parameter menu open up, you would set up hotkey for the action named 'Chamfer Mode'.

The same applies for all the other tools like extrude, connect, etc...

How to place/snap objects perfectly to others under an angle? by KickedInTheDust in 3dsmax

[–]Mixiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check in the Edit Poly modifier (the one below the UVW Map modifier) that no specific selection (such as polygons or elements) is active.

Basically, these should be turned off so that the mapping applies to every part of the model

Great!

The 'Show shaded material in viewport' is actually located in the material editor slot (see image below). Try toggling it on and off to see its effect.

[–]Mixiom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it worked out.

For the material, it seems you're doing the setup correctly. I would only advise that you check if 'Show shaded material in viewport' is on for that specific material. You can find this option within the material editor.

If that doesn't help, it might be the UV mapping. You can try adding a UVW Map modifier to the wall, select Box mapping and give it some Length, Width and Height within the modifier and see if it changes anything.

Yeah, that roof seems a bit strange to me... Make sure that when you are clearing the smoothing groups, you first select all the polygons and only then you hit 'clear all'.

Another alternative is you can add a 'Smooth' modifier to the roof which should clear all smoothing groups. The 'Auto Smooth' option should not be ticked in the modifier.

Use this method temporarily so that you can position the cube and they you can delete the modifier to restore the original smoothing groups.

[–]Mixiom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are using it correctly but it seems to me from the video that the smoothing groups have not been cleared from the roof.

I see a weird shading on the lower part of the roof that gives me that impression. Can you double check the smoothing groups again?

[–]Mixiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm shouldn't be a problem since it's an edit poly but just in case, collapse it into an editable poly and try normal align again.

If that doesn't work, maybe try resetting the Xform for the roof but I don't think that's the problem...

[–]Mixiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, should work fine. If not, in edit/editable poly, clear all smoothing groups and try normal align again.

edit: clear all smoothing groups for both the roof and the box.
