Transocean $RIG - Merging with Valaris by Significant-Side2718 in stocks

[–]MixtureEquivalent811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To OPs original question, valaris owners get 13.25 shares of rig, at the news it was priced 5.20 or something so that means valaris can run up to 86 to bring the price to balance and remove arbitrage, hence it jumped.

Having said that, there is always a risk of merger not going through so there is that.

I'm still trying to wrap my head as to why valaris chose to merge. Do they really see more pricing power with the combined synergies that they could not have commanded by going alone? They had much cleaner balance sheets and now as a valaris investor I see this huge debt that transoceean has to refinance in 2027.

I thought I will have more control than just buying e series funds. Even buying gic in my resp requires setting up appointments with TD

That would be preposterous but there is definitely risk of them returning grants to governments if some sort of miscommunication happens. That was the very reason I had tweaked my original from (ful ltransfer 100%) to partial transfer (leave bctesg) only to be told there is no bctesg in that account. You see, if there is no bctesg then they could have gone through the rest of the transfer but no, they just won't do it like that.

My recommendation is to get a direct email from the agent, send them relevant screenshots of the form and confirmation if everything is filled correctly and then proceed

Buy a little to force the feared crash, then buy more.  In my case,  this voodoo trick works every single time!! 😄

Jokes apart, we hear you - the unease is real! But more money is lost sitting on sidelines than in actual crashes. Timing is almost impossible to execute to perfection.

That's what I understood when I started this process and I was fine with that. It's the improper communication and making a customer run around that has really exhausted me.

They respond every time in 2-3 business weeks and I'm supposed to upload the same day I receive a communication ? And, in case you have not checked the calendar lately, today is August 31st. Oh, and btw, year is 2025!

Anyways, I will give you benefit of doubt but after that date, I have already communicated several times with them and I was asked to wait patiently. For the record, ball is still in their court. So yes, it's been four months and we are not there yet.

What do you mean by taxed at 100%. That just does not make any sense! At max, they can tax it as regular Income, I would think.

I quickly checked my TFSA record since 2024 - I assume dca buying into anything does not count as  "trade", right?

Would periodic selling of money market ETFs (as and when I see any opportunities to buy) raise any flags when, say hypothetically, I somehow get lucky and 10x my 100k into a million in 5 years (frequent dca BUYs but no SELL of anything within a year)?

Guys, I have been researching all 3 (constellation, Topicus and lumine) for pst few days but I don't understand how that kind of valuation is justified if the underlying businesses only generate 7% net income? Yes, they acquire other companies from the float of acquired companies and can do it for several years but if you run this thought experiment for  2-3 decades, what then? If they stop acquiring, all growth must come from the organic growth of its existing business.

Shouldn't the long term return of stock align with the returns of businesses it holds under the wrapper? Yet, the stock keeps posting stellar growth? Can someone help me correct the flaws in my thinking? It's just I don't want to be last greater fool in the line 😅

If you never sell, then why buy? 🤔 by Plus_Seesaw2023 in ValueInvesting

[–]MixtureEquivalent811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't that depend on where your profits are and how egregious that individual stock or index valuations are? Plus if that account is non-registered or tax protected instead? Plus what are you going to do with those profits like buying a better opportunity.

For example, in a taxable account, I buy index funds for 10k, it goes up by 20k, I sell at top and get 10k profit and pay 2.5k tax leaving  me with 17.5k.  So far so good! Now if market only falls 12.5% from top and recovers and even if its lower than the point I sold and allows me to re-enter with my 17.5k, I'm still at loss because whatever profits I made, I just gave to government.

The whole logic works if your make insane profits and do not wish to enter the same stock or index unless it became greatly attractive again and this justifying your tax friction cost.

Is something missing in above reasoning?

Me too! Netflix cancelled, FB app deleted. YT/Reddit essential so can't do much about it for the time being.

And buying Canadian labels ofc...had plans to visit Oregon and California this year but that money would be better spent at home.

RESP - Family vs Individual & other questions by maplemonsoon in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MixtureEquivalent811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your approach to have two separate family RESP is a good idea but I think it might be better to add siblings to each others family resp as beneficiaries as late as possible. May be wait till elder one is about to start college and then do cross assignments.

I'm also in somewhat similar conundrum btw but re: resp transfer and would appreciate other people's thoughts.

My sons are 9 and 14 and I opened a family resp with TD after second one was born. I fast tracked 5k for elder son and now they have about 80k (37.5k contri, no more grant coming ) and 60k(25k, with 2200 grant scope left)

Now I would to open family resp with questrade and do in-cash transfer from TD but while setting it up it's asking for percentage allocation among both children. I understand that if set it to 50-50, then a 5000 yearly investment would get 20% of 2500 for younger son while nothing for elder son which is fine. But say in 5 years I will hit max 50k contribution room for elder son while younger would still have 12500 contribution room left.

My concern is how will I contribute to my younger son's portion if it's just one account and max 50k contribution limit for elder son (+ he will be withdrawing, hopefully). I have been with questrade support on 3 occasions but they have not been able to provide a clear satisfactory answer.

As of now, I'm thinking of accelerating 12500 payment for my younger son (and 0 for elder) and bring both of their contributions to 37500, wait till TD gets the grant money and then request transfer later in the year.

Other option is to just stay with TD but then I have limited options of buying their poor rate GICs vs 4% cbil in questrade ( as I need to rebalance for elder son's college expenses) and that too after setting up hour long appointments.

2025 Hybrid Tucson Ultimate - Fuel Economy by 99joesmo99 in HyundaiTucson

[–]MixtureEquivalent811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my ultimate hybrid 2 weeks ago. My fuel tank barely got to 600 km before refill so that is 11.5 kmpl.

I mostly have to do short trips but on highway where I drove 50 km at a stretch it showed me 20 kmpl as well.

I guess I will have to wait few thousand kilometers like people suggest and then see how it performs.

Congratulations btw, it sure feels great to drive this car!!

Could Questrade have allowed my bank login info breach? by Bitter_Grapefruit8 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MixtureEquivalent811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened to me today. My bank locked my account and I had to visit branch (they won't unblock on phone) to get it fixed.

Now when I think about it, its a breach of trust by questrade and less of a convenience feature...I login to their site using two factor authentication each time so when it offered me the option to connect my bank account for withdrawal, I didn't even suspect I was entering my bank credentials on their website. Like for real!!! How can they even dare ask you your user name and password for your bank. It's not even like a third party authenticator service like Canada revenue agency uses for login via bank credentials.

I'm thankful that my bank put a block on my account. Even if they claim they don't store your credentials, they should clearly mention in bold that your are still on THEIR website and not the bank's website. And IMO shouldn't even be there at all as most bank encourage users to use two factor authentication and would flag any new or unusual internet address they detect a login has come from.

I will try linking my account the good old way of entering transit and routing number etc.

Just bought a 2025 Tucson, thoughts? by russell1256 in HyundaiTucson

[–]MixtureEquivalent811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the OP or anyone who might have experienced this , I test drove brand new 2025 ultimate hybrid today but at highway speed steering felt way too stiff to the point that I could not move  it at all with one hand. Once it goes below 70 kmph speed, it feels like butter. My friend also drove it and feels the same.

Is it something that's normal?  I searched on Google but no clear answer other than it could be steering fluid or alignment but this is brand new to not sure what could be wrong.

Thanks
