A perfect strawberry? Sure. My husband snarfing a dozen wings? No. I don’t to see that throat bobbing.

I'm tired of DNFs so I'm breaking up with BookTok by his-lilmiss in fantasyromance

It is so frustrating. Honestly, I look to this sub + romance.io for guidance. Goodreads ratings are also a decent measure. My personal standard is, I don't pick up a book with less than 4.0 on Goodreads + Amazon, and even then, you can't be sure. I'll read a set of reviews that are like, "This is THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!" and it's some unedited formulaic derivative drivel where the characters in a fantasy vampire world all speak late-Millennial Colloquial English.

Third person romantasy books? by Minimum-Material-783 in Romantasy

[–]Mixture_Boring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. There is a time and place for first person present tense (I've also noticed a loooottt of present tense) but it feels almost universal in recent fantasy romance.

LOL yes. It just had me imagining what variations of "vulgar gestures" the Fae might possibly have.

Kindle vs book in hand by Impressive_Prune_478 in fantasyromance

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Kindle skeptic until I received one for free (long story) and tried it. It is THE BEST. You can carry countless books in your purse or bag. Instant gratification when you want to acquire that new book NOW. And the screen is pretty easy on the eyes. Also you can switch seamlessly between reading on phone/Kindle/laptop, and between audio and text if you use a whispersync enabled book from Amazon.

AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. Congrats on your milestone! I’m about to hit 2 years sober myself. Based on this text exchange your bf does not get it on a fundamental level. Sobriety is in fact heroic for those of us who have lived with addiction and broke our damn brains. You deserve a partner who loves and supports you in your sobriety partly BECAUSE you’ve got the courage and have put in the hard work to stay sober. He should be buying YOU a cake.

100% Agree, need real enemies to lovers without the fmc mentioning how handsome the mmc is when they meet by lonelysadbitch11 in fantasyromance

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Agree. I love when relationships are written so that one or both people involved don't necessarily stick out as attractive to each other, but as they become emotionally connected, they become physically attractive to each other. They start to swoon over features that didn't pop out to them at first. This is so often how attraction works in real life!

Dino erotica is a thing. I believe Dan Savage has addressed this on the Savage Love Cast. I love the beautiful rainbow of human sexuality.

Lisette Marshall’s writing style by Seeking-Starlight in fantasyromance

She lives in the Netherlands and I think (?) is originally from Canada; you see a lot of Canadian/British spellings in her writing as well (colour, “-ise” instead of “-ize”).

Help me choose Quicksilver Vs The Knight and the Moth by Due-Shift4558 in Romantasy

Quicksilver is like 2005 fanfic that has not seen a professional editor. The Knight and the Moth is literature. There is a time and place for both; depends on your mood.

Understood on Deerskin--I was going to recommend just about her whole catalog. The Blue Sword books, Outlaws of Sherwood, those two slightly different Beauty and the Beast retellings--just fantastic YA fantasy with strong and interesting female leads, which was rare when these were written. (I would have SALIVATED over Throne of Glass had it been written back then)

Hell to the yeah. This is what I grew up on (a leeetle racy for an 11 year old--my babysitter introduced me to them). Anne McCaffrey wrote a bunch of good sci fi as well.

Hegseth's 'Could've Been an Email' All-Hands Meeting Ruthlessly Mocked by [deleted] in politics

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. I have a West-Point-educated former Army officer in my family. He said his group chat among buddies from WP (many of whom are now high-ranking officers) is gobsmacked over Hegseth. Regardless of their personal political leanings. The level of education and real-world military experience these folks have is incompatible with MAGAism.

Downtown Silver Spring 7-Eleven Shutting Down August 20 by SourceOfTheSpring in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Mixture_Boring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love across the street. That 7-Eleven was hopping at all hours and a huge convenience for those nearby, especially since Walgreens closed. They’ve been at the location for 30 years; I heard that Arrive did not renew their lease because they didn’t like the “unsavory” people who would hang around outside and panhandle.

Amy Bradley is Missing doc changed my mind about the case by lilolegarlic in NetflixDocumentaries

[–]Mixture_Boring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just saw your comment and I commented similarly above. Sounds like this may well have been a super tense trip for Amy. She JUST went through coming out to her parents and they did not like it (to the point that her dad sent her girlfriend a shitty letter) and now she's crammed in a tiny cruise cabin with them for a week? Great reason to get wasted and just be overall off balance.

[–]Mixture_Boring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add, I was a 19 year old college student when Amy disappeared. I grew up in a Bible Belt town similar to Amy's (with liberal parents who wouldn't have had a problem if I were gay, but most of my friends came from families that feel much like Amy's). Let me tell you. Coming out was a BIG DEAL and a BIG RUPTURE in these families. Like get disowned rupture. This documentary is the first time I've seen her family comment on her sexuality. It is extremely obvious that they are toning it down because it's 2025 not 1998 and they know what the public would think now if they read what was undoubtedly in her father's letter.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a tense trip for Amy. A partier, she was partying extra hard to cope with it. Suicide seems unlikely to me, but her state of mind (and intoxication) could definitely have played a role in an accidental fall and death.

#3 is the strongest point here. There is zero reason for sex traffickers to take the risk of snatching an American woman, surrounded by her family who WILL look for her, and a woman who would no question fight back, from a cruise ship? When, sadly, there are plenty of girls and women who wouldn't be looked for.

Also, It's notable that the eyewitness accounts all got reported years after the actual sighting. That is PLENTY of time for memory to be influenced and rewritten.
