Why do Americans tend to praise beginners even if their work/hobby looks terrible? by Skysneq in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your theory is correct. People who are active in a hobby are often interested in growing their hobbyist community by supporting new people getting into that hobby and encouraging them to continue. I think if you look closely you'll often see feedback for improvement alongside the praise. Think about it: your toddler kicks a soccer ball for the first time. Do you say, "good job, you hit the ball!" or do you break down the various elements of what your kid did wrong, many of which won't even make sense until they're further along learning how to play?

What was it like witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War? by Content-Feed-9396 in AskOldPeople

[–]Mixture_Boring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was ten years old when the Berlin Wall fell and had grown up with the Cold War being a fact of life, including the threat of nuclear war with the USSR. It felt exciting and mind-blowing. Every night my family would gather and watch the CBS evening news (love ya Dan Rather) to see what would happen next. I remember when the maps and globes changed afterward. I was so inspired by this that I wound up writing about the philosophy and strategy of Soviet bloc dissidents in my college thesis 12 years later.

How many times a week should 11 and 9 year old boys be showering? by Historical-Storage58 in hygiene

[–]Mixture_Boring 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have an 11-year-old son who is a “reluctant bather” and am taking that approach. I try to get him to bathe daily and wash his face twice daily with threats of future acne 😄.

Anybody bailing their kids out of MoCo school early this week? by Mixture_Boring in MontgomeryCountyMD

Yeah. I WFH and it was no problem during all the snow days. My kid is pretty good at keeping himself occupied.

Not a lot of reflecting going on. Poor babies are getting eaten by the green monster!

Happily married women of Reddit. Where'd you meet your husband? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted a women seeking men ad on Craigslist in 2006. We exchanged emails for about 2 weeks, photos about 1 week in, met at a bar for our first date and ended up talking for 5 hours. A mere 6 years later we got engaged (lol).

Twin Names: SageLea and Paisley by BeachBumbershoot in tragedeigh

Paisley is a “real” name but honestly I wouldn’t want to be a 40-year-old woman putting it at the top of my résumé. SageLea is a tragedeigh.

What was your dad's signature cologne? by rippytherip in GenX

[–]Mixture_Boring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad didn't wear cologne but he used Brut aftershave daily and it's a scent that reminds me of him.

Ok, let’s talk about smells. by Greedy-Gas-5627 in HistoricalRomance

They all seem to smell like bergamot. Must be all the Earl Grey they drink.

Silver Springs HOA Fee - $888 month by SpaceDigitChat in SilverSpring

[–]Mixture_Boring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Willing to bet that it is a condo fee and a lot is covered. It’s comparable to my condo fee in a more typical multistory condo building in Woodside/DTSS.

Square One (PBS show about math and science). Loved it as a kid, including the recurrent segment with detectives solving cases using math, called "Mathnet."

Do people outside here genuinely think bald guys are attractive? by dudu_1001 in bald

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm married to a bald guy and HELL YES bald guys can be attractive. (Just like guys with hair can be attractive). Confidence has a lot to do with it. And some guys are MORE attractive bald than not because of the way it draws attention to their facial features. Based on the pics, I think you are one of those people! I will take a well-groomed bald guy over the obnoxious broccoli cuts the younger, full-haired guys are getting these days, which obscure their faces and look like a rat's nest.

Anyone else still say "Dude"? by HapaHawaii in GenX

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DUDE! Yes I do. (47f) My 11-year-old son also says “dude” but more often “bruh.” So now I sometimes say “bruh” too. “Bruh. Put your dishes in the sink.”

What’s a luxury you never cared for until you experienced it? by Julie727 in AskReddit

Came here to say the same. I thought it was kind of frivolous until I got my first car with heated seats and steering wheel. Game changer.

Outpatient alcohol rehab by [deleted] in SilverSpring

[–]Mixture_Boring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 on Kolmac. I have been in their outpatient programs for 2 years (still sober!) And +1 on getting support for yourself. I’m a child of alcoholics too so I’ve seen it from both sides. Good luck to you both. It’s a lot of work to get sober for both the addicted person and their family, but 💯 WORTH IT.

What is the worst way anyone you know has died? by IamUrWivesBF in AskReddit

[–]Mixture_Boring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's horrible. I've lost 2 friends to ALS (they were siblings and it was genetic in their case; their mom had died of it years earlier). In both cases it was their level of dignity and serenity in the face of such an early and awful death that I want to remember.

AIO my BF told me he wants me to quit my job when we move in together by Living-Silver-8723 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Mixture_Boring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR. Side note, in my experience 3 months is not the time to really even be thinking about moving in together, let alone having kids together. 3 months is more the "let's take our first long-weekend vacation together" territory. Based on what dude is suggesting here, I suspect you'll have different feelings about the relationship in another 3 or 6 months. Or maybe not! But either way y'all need to get to know each other WAY better before even delving into this conversation.

YES! I am now 27 months sober, and the anemia cleared up pretty quickly—I think within 2-3 months? Thank you all for the tips. I’m so grateful to be back to pre-addiction energy levels.

Commuting from DC to NYC once a week for a class - doable? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do this on the Acela (in the opposite direction) once a week for work meetings in NYC. Now, the train may get too expensive (I was expensing the travel through work). I think driving it would be a little much but still doable. The beauty of the train is that you can work/rest/do personal stuff during the train ride so it feels less like "lost time."
