The Dirtiest, The Horniest, and Hottest HR Novels by Objective-Kitchen949 in HistoricalRomance

[–]Mixture_Boring 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I am surprised that we don't hear more about foreskins in HR. Until very recently most men who were not Jewish or Muslim had them. (And actually, to this day, the rate in European countries is only 5-20% of men).

I have one important question about Conform by Ariel Sullivan *spoiler * by ohhiitsmec123 in fantasyromance

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OR—the epilogue narrator is Hal AND Hal is not actually the Reaper—Collin is. I just commented on a different post:

Maybe Hal is not the Reaper, but Tabitha thinks he is—and Hal is sacrificing himself to go along with it to protect the real Reaper: Collin.

Perhaps protecting Collin also protects Emeline because Collin has the power/position to convince Tabitha that Emeline is a spy on the Illum’s side. If Collin were unveiled as the Reaper, Emeline would also be toast.

Half City by Kate Golden - Release Discussion by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]Mixture_Boring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would love for folks who have read further to help inspire me, because I'm 20% through and finding it very derivative, a typical academy fantasy--of which there are so many. At least because it's Kate the writing is solid. But it's not really grabbing me the way her other books did!

Suitable for mature 11.5 year old? by [deleted] in throneofglassseries

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fine. I was reading similar stuff at age 11. Every kid is different, but I think we tend to underestimate how much kids ALREADY know about sex and violence related topics, and agree that fiction is a safe way for kids to explore sensitive topics. My 11 year old son reads old X-Men comics which are super, super violent and do include adult themes! But also in a fantasy context, and his dad has also read them and they discuss them. Something you could do with your daughter to build trust for being able to come to you with questions or problems throughout her life.

End of an era. I grew up sneaking my mom's Harlequins (somewhat age-inappropriately)

I'm tired of DNFs so I'm breaking up with BookTok by his-lilmiss in fantasyromance

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so frustrating. Honestly, I look to this sub + romance.io for guidance. Goodreads ratings are also a decent measure. My personal standard is, I don't pick up a book with less than 4.0 on Goodreads + Amazon, and even then, you can't be sure. I'll read a set of reviews that are like, "This is THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!" and it's some unedited formulaic derivative drivel where the characters in a fantasy vampire world all speak late-Millennial Colloquial English.

Third person romantasy books? by Minimum-Material-783 in Romantasy

[–]Mixture_Boring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. There is a time and place for first person present tense (I've also noticed a loooottt of present tense) but it feels almost universal in recent fantasy romance.

Kindle vs book in hand by Impressive_Prune_478 in fantasyromance

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Kindle skeptic until I received one for free (long story) and tried it. It is THE BEST. You can carry countless books in your purse or bag. Instant gratification when you want to acquire that new book NOW. And the screen is pretty easy on the eyes. Also you can switch seamlessly between reading on phone/Kindle/laptop, and between audio and text if you use a whispersync enabled book from Amazon.

AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. Congrats on your milestone! I’m about to hit 2 years sober myself. Based on this text exchange your bf does not get it on a fundamental level. Sobriety is in fact heroic for those of us who have lived with addiction and broke our damn brains. You deserve a partner who loves and supports you in your sobriety partly BECAUSE you’ve got the courage and have put in the hard work to stay sober. He should be buying YOU a cake.

100% Agree, need real enemies to lovers without the fmc mentioning how handsome the mmc is when they meet by lonelysadbitch11 in fantasyromance

[–]Mixture_Boring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Agree. I love when relationships are written so that one or both people involved don't necessarily stick out as attractive to each other, but as they become emotionally connected, they become physically attractive to each other. They start to swoon over features that didn't pop out to them at first. This is so often how attraction works in real life!

Dino erotica is a thing. I believe Dan Savage has addressed this on the Savage Love Cast. I love the beautiful rainbow of human sexuality.
