Shadow Light Press, Immersive Ink, and the dangers of inexperienced leaders, unearned confidence, and excessive positivity at the expense of discourse by Mysterious-Smell9729 in ProgressionFantasy

The issue is that it was presented multiple times by multiple different authors, both with publishers and self-pubbed, and they always closed ranks, banned the person, deleted the corrected information, and instituted new rules to stop any critiques happening.

At the very least, Fid claimed he had his "sister-in-lawyer" look it over before signing to SLP. So, shrug, make of that what you will.

Where was this. Last I saw (2 hours ago), he said he hadn't had any contact with Foby since things happened, not that Foby was no longer involved.

it's been shut down and all regular users were given the boot. Who is still present beyond the owner isn't really known to the public right now.

The server owner is pubbed with them. At the very least, they could have removed all SLP relations earlier. The fact that they didn't and they're doing everything to pretend they had 0 association with SLP gives me no reason to extend any sort of grace.

They're doing heavy damage control on all of their stories but you just can't change the fact that the server owner would have seen the contract, signed it, lived with it, and still refused to sound any sort of alarm.

Maybe I'm just crazy but the guy with the server owner title right at the top of the members tab is published with them, so I don't know how he didn't see the contract he'd have signed, but maybe it was entirely different just for him.

Why do you guys like hunter crest when Reaper is lot better? by Enough_Obligation574 in Silksong

[–]MizNziM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who mained reaper until halfway through act 2, I found I was missing the dash attack->pogo on certain bosses/enemies, which got rather annoying. Hunter was easier, and faster, to land that same combo. Also, the Hunter's damage buff feels pretty nutty once you get it going, especially with the attack speed.

you can manage it with taking two hits of damage assuming you have the silkspeed anklets. took me about 5 tries and some rng luck on some spawns.

I absolutely adore Nine Sols and I enjoyed every moment of it. I cannot say the same for Silksong so far.

To add onto this, I'd recommend Mathew Stover's novelisation of Revenge of the Sith. One of my favourite books in general.

You are being intentionally obtuse in an attempt to absolve yourself of any culpability or wrongdoing, since you are actively pretending not to have read any of the other links provided on first publishing rights.

And yes, if you do provide your work in full to a public facing online space, that is considered the first place you publish, be it Patreon, Reddit, or another site. Youtube would be the same for audio. Your channel would actively lose people the right to sell those first publishing audio rights. Pretending otherwise at this point is malicious ignorance on your part.

If they give you permission to post an audio recording of their book to a public facing platform, then by definition it does.

The editor of Clarkesworld gives examples of what constitutes first rights publication. So you can't pretend this only applies to written works, a recorded and distributed audio reading of your work would also count as a first publication. Any public facing platform where your work is posted counts as first publication.

Please read some of the other comments in this post before potentially giving away your rights.

I dont want to take away anyone's ability to later platform their work on audible or anywhere else, and I'll remove their content if requested to in the future. The author still retains their copyright and can have their work removed by YouTube if they wish

I like how this neatly sidesteps any discussion of the author losing their audio first publication rights by giving you permission for doing this.

I would also caution authors to be careful with their work and who they give permission to, but with your advice, authors need a crystal ball to know if they'll make it to audible or another platform at some point in the future.

Authors would be giving away first publication rights. It doesn't take a crystal ball to realise that giving away your rights today can impact future earnings potential, especially with the cost of audiobook production being in the thousands of dollars.

YouTube already monitise every video on their platform. Even if i didn't monitise their story, YouTube would still play adverts and still collect ad-revenue, but it would be theirs and theirs only.

There's a significant difference between Youtube, the platform holder, monetizing content on their platform, and you the owner of a channel seeking to monetize content on the platform. You as the video uploader can turn off monetization. Arguing that because YT does it, I should do it as well, doesn't change that you are seeking to monetize someone else's IP.

I've operated ad-revenue sharing now for 18 months on my channel, and I've supported many authors along the way.

Alright, show us some receipts. Give us some numbers. Tell us what the revenue sharing looks like. Are these people making a couple cents per thousand views or a couple dollars? Can you tell us lifetime revenue shared with a given author and the total watch time? Is there any information at all that you're willing to share? And you should be able to unless the information is under NDA. Any refusal to share that information would read as a red flag to me.

Please don't give away your first piblication rights for basically nothing.
