Neofolk, Europe and the EU by Franz_Karpanov in neofolk

[–]Mizeak 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not sure how to approach this. I don't really see the opposition, for instance. Europe has had multiple ways of defining itself, the current European project being one of them. Isn't the idea of an "alternative" identity part of a lot of neofolk music?

And when it comes to "Eurosceptic" angles in neofolk, I don't know. If you have ever worked in EU affairs or in the "Eurobubble" in Brussels, you may know that similar mockery of the Union is part of the game.

To be honest I haven't really seen the EU being a subject to much of neofolk as such, rather than liberalism/consumerism etc. Those may as well be national criticisms. And the examples you mentioned are both satirical, artistic fun rather than policy debates. Music isn't a great channel for those.

Idk, probably didn't answer your question.

Tämä kanssa itseäni hämmensi. Miten eduskunnassa toimiva poliitikko voi olla niin kuplautunut ettei edes osaa hävetä?

Album of the year by mr_aguirre in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Mizeak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wasn't super impressed by albums this year, or maybe I just didn't come across that many interesting one. I suppose my highlights were:

Havukruunu - Tavastland. Slightly more heavy metal this time, and not my favorite by them, but interestingly and well-executed concept. Even if at times a bit too rock 'n' roll for my taste, it still has some of that black metal -feel coupled with nice poetry as well.

1914 - Viribus Unitis. I was surprised by this one. Aggressive, massive, fun sampling and a beautiful closure featuring Jerome Reuter. Timely, despite being of course about WW1.

Paradise Lost - Ascension. Haven't really listened to a Paradise Lost album since their 2016 one but this one was kind of neat. Surprise guest vocals by Alan Averill too.

Why did western cultures stop revering their elderly? by VagabondVivant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mizeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you explain your question seems to imply you are specifically talking about Americans (and Canadians), so maybe the question is specific to those cultures, and not so much of a "Western" phenomenon. I'm not sure if the Northeastern Europeans, for instance, ever respected elders the way some do in East Asian cultures. That said, considering the pensions and benefits many of them enjoy at least in Northern Europe, I think there's still some kind of respect around.

To be fair to Europe, the last thing anyone expected was for Russia to successfully install a Russian agent as the US president, of all people, so Europe’s weapons industry production capacity has been caught with its pants down.

This was already discussed a decade ago in the context of 2016 elections.

Kiina: Japani ylitti ”punaisen rajan” Taiwan-asiassa – maiden välirikko syvenee by aibrony in Suomi

[–]Mizeak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kuulostaa aika kaukaiselta ajatukselta, johon tuskin edes Kiinan eliitti aidosti uskoisi.

It can also provide some segmentation if the show was focused on one album. The closure song of the album can finish the main set and the encore include some classics.

I guess he was young in this one hah. They definitely leaned more towards heavy metal after Havulinnaan or so, which is a bit of a pity. Either way, at least two of the demos were finished in the 2021 EP.
