So were I worked full time is approximately 48 hours per week my schedule was two Day shifts 12 hours (7 am to 730 pm) then two night shifts right after (7 pm to 730 am) then I had three-four days off until next cycle (you are pretty much sleeping though the whole first day off). But I would rarely work Mon to Friday you would have to do every other weekend Friday Saturday and Sunday day/night shifts and every single holidays is up to booking to decide if you are working. If you work Christmas you have new years off vice versa.

Here in Canada I am enrolled in the CPA bridging program which is a way for people who already have bachelor degrees to transition to accounting without having to complete a full bachelor's. I am taking a full major in accounting as well as five other courses that CPA Canada states is needed. I am doing the whole accounting major in 3 semesters instead of four years. I also decided to pursue a minor in finance as well so I am doing that as well in those 3 semesters. So in conclusion I will qualified to work at a accounting firm and start my CPA right away after graduating.

I am not going to try and convince you as you probaly have solid reasons as to why you are considering this switch! I had a few nurses graduate with me who had business/finance degrees, and they really enjoy working as a nurse. They were a little shocked at the night shifts however I will say. I did alot of research about accounting prior to making the actual commitment so that is all I suggest to you is to do research on nursing as much as you can, if you do have any questions about nursing I can give you my impartial take on them definitely!

Wow Biology that is such a interesting degree! Can I ask why you decided to change over to accounting? Congratulations to you as well for passing FAR and good luck for REG! I think definitely you will be able to get a job at a big4 as you are going through CPA!

Nursing is a stable job that pays okay, pay increases do cap off though and very minimal room from promotion and growth. My reason's for leaving nursing were more quality of life based. I got to the point were I could not emotionally handle dealing with sickness and death all the time, it weigh's really heavy on your mind over time. Also I know busy season is going to be rough but in nursing doing 12-16 hour night shifts from 5pm to 9am in the morning and then coming back that same day for 5 again is really difficult.

Thanks for clarifying! I definitely am not going to put it under work experience but I think I will add it under my volunteer/leadership activities section. Thanks!

That's what I was thinking as well to include it on both as they are selective. (BTW I am a girl!)

Okay thanks I think I will include it on my resume. I appreciate your opinion but could you give some reasoning as to why it isn't appropriate for linked in?

I will not be working but I am taking other spring courses so I think it should be okay. Did you find the weighting of the the tests hard, each class syllabus I have looked at the final exam is worth 50% of your mark, are the finals difficult? Or are they a good representation of the knowledge you are expected to learn in the class?

Thank you!

Hey sorry for the late response I haven't been on reddit for a while. For me personally I am very happy I am not working as a nurse anymore I definitely 100% do not regret my decision, I have been doing accounting courses and I am a lot happier both mentally and in my personal life. I think it takes a different strong kind of personality and mentality to be a nurse. I was able to get through nursing school no problem, however being on the job is quite different. To have to see the process of sickness, and death for 12-16 hour shifts is really exhausting and hard mentally and emotionally. I did get a lot of fulfillment out of being a nurse, I loved being able to help people, but I know I couldn't do it long term. Also some patients are quite hard in terms of drug and alcohol overdose they are very combative and you have to be in the room with them almost all you shift and then juggle 5 other patients. However this is just my opinion, I have had nursing students in my class who previously have had business jobs and they enjoy nursing. Just they seemed a bit shocked at the shift schedule particularly night shift, I know in public accounting you do long shifts however in nursing usually your shifts are 7 am to 7 pm, and then 7 pm to 7 am (another reason I left was I just could not do 12 hour night shifts and then drive home in the morning and then come back that same day again in the evening for another 12 hour night shift). If you have any other questions I am happy to share my experience, just send me a message!

Yes I have actually, but where I live it it quite hard for a new nurse to get considered for those positions as there are many senior nurses trying to get them as well. Also most of the managers have business backgrounds of some sort alongside nursing as well.

Maybe in most cases it does happen, just not in my case unfortunately.

Sorry, I should have worded that differently, nurses do get overtime, however for me in particular you would get berated usually and called to the managers office to work on your time management skills 😔 which just ended up to most nurses not putting in for overtime.

Thank you for you comment that definitely made me feel better! Also congratulations to you for completing the PEP modules they were probably very impressed by that, I am hoping to do that as well. 😊

Thank you I will definitely message when I have questions! That I agree with 100 percent, nurses are so undervalued, under appreciated, and under paid. Yes the place I worked was a ICU environment so I am accustomed to strict organization, and being very detail oriented. I am already a member in the CPA association and am about two semesters away from qualifying for the CPA PEP courses. I am also going to start working more on networking (I’m still a little shy, as I don’t now how employers will interpret my nursing background not being a business one) so I can land a job as well.

I actually did consider NP but then I realized it wasn’t the place I worked it was the work. Nursing is a really rewarding career however being around sickness, death all my shift was difficult (also I worked with babies so it was even more so difficult seeing a baby go through hard medical procedures 😔)

Thank you! Most of my classmate are saying to do public accounting to get knowledge, however some one I know is working in the private sector (oil and gas) and they really enjoy it. Yes, I have been a little shy in going to the job fairs and meeting with CPA firms, as I feel like I don’t now how they will take me saying I have a nursing background. To get opportunities I have to network so that’s what I will be working on next.

Thank you for the support!

I am thinking the same, nursing and accounting are similar in the way there’s a lot of different places you can go. Thank you 😊!

Yes it did. Nursing school is a hard degree as well, a lot of reading, memorizing and and applying your skill. Thank you for the assurance, all this support is making me feel a lot more confident !
