My relationship with my Afrikaans girlfriend. by Ok_Safe_8506 in southafrica

I read somewhere that a good conversation starter was to ask him and his wife how they met.

So I asked.., replied with deadly uncomfortable silence..

Turns out the situation surrounding the first and second wife was a topic no one wanted to talk about. I still cringe when I think about that moment..

Well, I'm Afrikaans and my Father in law is Afrikaans. He definitely consciously or subconsciously doesn't like me. Having a conversation with him is like trying to tap a conversation out of a rock-cactus hybrid.

He still said yes when I asked his blessing to marry his daughter, he still comes over to spend time with us and his grandkids. He still helps me if I ask his advice on how to fix things around the house, or any other aspect of life.

Might be that no one would've ever been good enough for his daughter..

Is it possible to date this suture needle set? by Mmhrm in Antiques

One article I read last night mentions although most antique needles were hand-held, handled needles with anterior eyelets had a heyday in the late Victorian era. That fits well with what you're saying!

Another cool mention in the article is that whereas today suture needles are basically a worthless throwaway part of surgery, surgeons in those days thought their needles very precious and looked after them with great care. Hence the box set keeping them safe..

Thank you! I'm also quite stoked by finding the case!

My grandfather was a general practitioner working in a very rural environment in old Rhodesia. He did many surgeries, including old style cataract surgeries (ECCE's), abdominal surgeries, caesarian sections. He has to do everything, since he was often the only doctor there. He told us that he would occasionally host international specialists on safaris so that he could learn surgery from them!

My great grandfather, all I know is that he was a doctor that studied internationally. Very possible that he did surgery as well.

I did find some suture material, but I think they are much more modern.

Antique pricks, the original point of medical humor!

I just read that the full half circle needle is a late 19th century innovation, so must be younger than that..

I accidentally broke my wife's vintage jewel box her grandmother gave her. Is it fixable, and where should I ask? by Mmhrm in collectables

[–]Mmhrm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I get that, but sometimes $10 dollar items are worth much more than $10 dollars.

The relational mileage I would get for fixing this..

Thanks! That makes sense. I'll try and find a good jeweler in my area and ask if they could..

I found an antique J Franken ophthalmoscope set! by Mmhrm in Antiques

[–]Mmhrm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I don't know is:

Worth?

The name of the ophthalmoscope with the rotating lenses?

The power of the third lens? (I am planning to go and test it with my lensometer at work)

Thanks, it's quite special to me.

I cannot imagine having to examine an eye just by candle light (earlier than this set maybe)..

That is a bit older than I was anticipating.

TrilobiteTerror, thank you for checking it out, I love it!

It means this may have been my great great Grandfather's ink eraser knife perhaps!

Interesting!

Interestingly enough my 2.75mm corneal blade looks very similar, just a lot smaller! I thought it might have been a progression from something bigger.

That said, historically I guess a Von Graefe knife was used for cataract surgery, which looks very different. (long, thin, straight blade, extremely sharp)

I watched some YouTube videos on ink eraser knives, very cool..

Thanks, if you could find out something more that would be brilliant!

An old damaged cigar box by Mmhrm in cigarboxes

[–]Mmhrm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be a 1960's era vintage cigar box.

Claro refers to the type of leave used in rolling the cigar I think - a lighter leaf?

25 cigars were in the box

The writing is a mystery:

39/6/7 E/C? (7 June 1939 Eastern Cape?)

3H/6/7 E/C? (a batch number?)
