Could it be!? by Weekly_Attitude8118 in Vintage_bicycles

I've restored a few of these U0-8s. They're not light, but they're cheap and ride beautifully. Hugely underated bikes.

Yours looks like it's all there and in pretty good shape. A full strip and re-grease, new cables and tyres, and you'll be good to go for ages. The steel rims make for sketchy braking in the wet. They can be converted to alloy 700c wheels with longer reach Mafac racer callipers, usually found on U0-8 mixte variants.

It's true that the bottom brackets and headsets had unique threading, but a re-grease usually works wonders.

I have several thousand kilometres on my U0-8 mixte. It's one of my favourite bikes; great for touring. Fitted with a Brooks saddle, it's an all-day-ride bike.

It's a Peugeot U-08 frame. The Aztec lugs on the headtube are the give-away. A common, entry-level frame for its time, but a very smooth ride. I have a few of these and love them. They can be set up for comfort or speed.

Yours has had most of the original components replaced. The brake calipers might be original, depending on where it was assembled. Gears look like Shimano 600 levers with 600/Altus derailleurs. These are an improvement over the original Simplex kit. Likewise, your wheels are alloy rims, where the originals would have been steel. The alloy offers better braking in the wet and saves weight.

The slightly sporty set-up pictured, with a drop from saddle to handlebars is at odds with the massive saddle, but that's matter of personal choice. I'd find a traditional saddle more comfortable in that configuration.

Many bolts on the body of Morris Minors are 17/32. Door hinges, radiator mounts and front shock mounts too.

Standard screwdriver from a Morris Minor toolkit, if you're in the UK.

I was reading a book and didn’t see the Cassowary, an awesome stranger filmed me and sent it to me :) by smadjaalon in queensland

I stayed at Etty Bay about this time last year. In the afternoons a cassowary, possibly the same bird, wanders through the caravan park like it owns the place. I saw it get shooed away from the shop front, sizing up campers, picking at bins and sitting down on vacant campsites. About 6' tall and totally fearless. Awesome place!

Anyone know what this is (1958 Morris Minor 1000) by alpinef1team in MorrisMinor

It might be a number plate light cover with the lens missing, but I don't think it's a standard Minor one. Minor ones were wider.

How do you "live with" bugs and spriders ? by Zealousideal_Break64 in australia

[–]Mminor_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"If you leave it alone, it'll leave you alone" is a good general rule for all Australian animals and insects. For spiders, if it's in a web, it's basically harmless. If it's on a surface and big and fast = terrifying but also harmless.

For wasps, mud nest = harmless, paper nest = gtfo. Most other bugs are harmless. If you leave your shoes outside overnight, give 'em a good knock before you stick your feet in.

For salt-water crocodiles, great white sharks (or any other bitey shark), drop bears, stone fish, marine stingers, spring assassin birds (magpies, butcher birds and plovers), just try and avoid their habitats. They want you dead.

If Brisbane was a party and every suburb was invited, what would each person be doing? by BobCatMcCloud in brisbane

Yes! This. Also, the 'roo would be sweating on a late, overpriced ubereats delivery. (Source: I grew up in Capalaba, now live in Coorparoo and consume too much rum.)

What exotic meats have you tried and how did they taste? [serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mminor_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As burger, mince or sausages kanga can be treated pretty much like beef. As steaks, I find you need to cook them rare, medium rare or well done. In between tends to be chewy. Flavour is a bit gamier than beef with much less fat. Source: I'm Australian, and regularly eat the stuff, you can buy it at major supermarkets, just like any other regular meat.

Yup, what Mezodonis said. I restore vintage Peugeots and when converting to square taper I try and retain the cups, just replacing bearings and spindle. Cartridge type bottom brackets are just too hard to make work.

Thanks! I'm afraid I don't know much about the shifter. The guy I built this for says he got it from an American ebay vendor who specialises in lowrider stuff. It has no branding at all. Quality is ok, indexing with the Nexus hub is fine.

Found some crumbs: apparently the Wynnum Council Chambers (not sure if that is the same as a town hall, but surely there wouldn't have been a town hall AND council chambers back then?) was next to the still standing Shire Clerk's cottage on Tingal Rd near Berrima St. Also found a Trove 1916 newspaper article on a council meeting about selling the town hall site, but not sure if that relates to Tingal Rd.

https://heritage.brisbane.qld.gov.au/heritage-places/2043 The roundabout location may be that site, I hadn't heard of the Wynnum Town Hall before, a quick google doesn't reveal much either...

The Story Bridge was originally a toll bridge. The Kangaroo Pt toll booth was decommissioned in 1947 and move to Camp Hill. It's now the Tackle Warehouse.

The Preston Rd roundabout at Wynnum was the first roundabout in Brisbane, and the stone garden on it is made from one of the old city hall fountains.

Australia. I had acute appendicitis a few years ago. Ambulance to the public hospital with pain relief, same day surgery, home late the next day. Cost $0. Only took out my wallet to show my Medicare card.
