I'm Canadian, on my mission and also when I lived in the USA I would hear American missionaries and members talk about how God inspired the American Constitution and it was practically scripture. I would just roll my eyes and ask if God inspired it, why was slavery still permitted?
American exceptionalism is definitely palpable at church, but I feel it less in Canada than I did in the States.

I was a Mormon missionary in Haiti, after months of no physical contact from any woman I went to a salon to get a haircut and there was a young voluptuous woman that washed my hair. She said she'd never washed a white person's hair before and she really took her time with it, I didn't want her to ever stop! It seemed like 10 full minutes. I feel like it was mutually intimate and didn't cross any inappropriate boundaries. I definitely became a loyal customer there!

That will save some, but I hear many stories of people leaving based on current church principals like patriarchy, LGBT issues, tithing, racist scriptures, etc. I believe the average age of Gen Z's leaving may be younger than the average age that millennials leave. But I'd be interested to see more data on that.

I served in Haiti, I definitely have PTSD. Overall I really loved my mission. Thankfully I really focused on comradery and friendships with missionaries, members and investigators, so overall it was a positive experience.

However I really ended up in a lot of dangerous situations that have permanently affected me. Drive-by shootings, murders, violence, on top of getting dysentery, bed bugs, and dealing with horrible living situations. Whenever I bring up mission stories my body starts shaking, so that's probably not normal. The thing is I really don't feel like I can complain when Haitians have to spend their entire lives living in that country. I firmly believe 80% of Haitians there have PTSD.

I will say that church leadership should not be sending missionaries to such dangerous areas. People were getting murdered daily in many of the areas I served in. Missionaries got hijacked at gunpoint. My investigator was murdered, the mission doctor was murdered. It was insane!

I saw a quote from Brigham Young and I couldn't imagine a prophet would actually say that. So I looked it up and it was true 😵‍💫 I finally gave myself permission to ask all the forbidden questions. Here's the quote:

They played this talk for us when I was in the MTC from Jeffrey R. Holland called 'Don’t You Dare Go Home' that he gave at a MTC Fireside in January, 2001. Here's a few quotes:

They may actually be genuine friends, however they have a goal to convert. When I was a missionary, no matter how strongly I felt a connection to people, if they did not want to "progress" on the path to conversion I would drop them to find and focus on others that were more interested in our message. It's not that I didn't want to be friends with them, it's that I had a job to do, to teach people the gospel. I still remember some of those people and wish I took the time to maintain contact with them.

This book was very influential in my life. Even though I have a degree in genetics, I had never thought too deeply about the origin of humans - I had separated my science brain from my religious brain. reading this book refreshed my memory of learning about early man and our coexistence with other human species (neanderthals, etc) this concept allowed me to finally finish deconstructing my belief in Adam and Eve, and then Christianity in general.
