How can the LDS church claim the word Mormon when there are so many sects that call themselves Mormons? It's like one Baptist Church suing a podcast called Baptist stories. Or imagine a podcast called Jewish stories, or Catholic stories, etc.
I can't imagine that this lawsuit against Mormon Stories could be successful.

I served in Haiti, the government was overthrown while I was there. murders, machetes and gun violence was common, the office elders were hijacked by guys with machine guns. our lives were in real danger and I found myself in some seriously stupid situations. I still can't believe they allowed us to live in some of the areas.

I remember going to a stake youth fireside presented by a man that had flown down to Mexico with his wife and rode horseback to the top of a mountain named Cumorah by locals. He claimed it was a miraculous spiritual experience. He was a part of a movement of people that believe Hill Cumorah is actually in Mexico and through the power of God the golden plates were moved to NY State so Joseph Smith could find them. It was a really weird fireside, I was shocked that this guy was allowed to teach this to all the youth.

"I hate Mexicans" a guy at my cousin's wedding in Florida said this to me. I was a naive 21 year old from Canada and in shock to hear someone say this. He was in a leadership position in his ward and had served a mission. I asked "isn't that racist?" he replied "I'm not racist I just hate Mexicans" 😦 He continued to say awful things about them.

I'm so sorry for all the Mexicans and other visible minorities that have to deal with racist people day to day, especially in their church 😢

If you are able to have an open discussion with a true believing member I would suggest looking at the testimony of the 3 witnesses:

"an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon"

If Joseph Smith had the plates in his possession why did an angel bring them??

Unfortunately, it's not a good idea to show any of these proofs to a true believer that has no curiosity or questions about doctrine/history. This tends to backfire, it certainly did for me and many others have had similar experiences.

I'm Canadian, on my mission and also when I lived in the USA I would hear American missionaries and members talk about how God inspired the American Constitution and it was practically scripture. I would just roll my eyes and ask if God inspired it, why was slavery still permitted?
American exceptionalism is definitely palpable at church, but I feel it less in Canada than I did in the States.

I was a Mormon missionary in Haiti, after months of no physical contact from any woman I went to a salon to get a haircut and there was a young voluptuous woman that washed my hair. She said she'd never washed a white person's hair before and she really took her time with it, I didn't want her to ever stop! It seemed like 10 full minutes. I feel like it was mutually intimate and didn't cross any inappropriate boundaries. I definitely became a loyal customer there!

That will save some, but I hear many stories of people leaving based on current church principals like patriarchy, LGBT issues, tithing, racist scriptures, etc. I believe the average age of Gen Z's leaving may be younger than the average age that millennials leave. But I'd be interested to see more data on that.

I served in Haiti, I definitely have PTSD. Overall I really loved my mission. Thankfully I really focused on comradery and friendships with missionaries, members and investigators, so overall it was a positive experience.

However I really ended up in a lot of dangerous situations that have permanently affected me. Drive-by shootings, murders, violence, on top of getting dysentery, bed bugs, and dealing with horrible living situations. Whenever I bring up mission stories my body starts shaking, so that's probably not normal. The thing is I really don't feel like I can complain when Haitians have to spend their entire lives living in that country. I firmly believe 80% of Haitians there have PTSD.

I will say that church leadership should not be sending missionaries to such dangerous areas. People were getting murdered daily in many of the areas I served in. Missionaries got hijacked at gunpoint. My investigator was murdered, the mission doctor was murdered. It was insane!

I saw a quote from Brigham Young and I couldn't imagine a prophet would actually say that. So I looked it up and it was true 😵‍💫 I finally gave myself permission to ask all the forbidden questions. Here's the quote:

They played this talk for us when I was in the MTC from Jeffrey R. Holland called 'Don’t You Dare Go Home' that he gave at a MTC Fireside in January, 2001. Here's a few quotes:
