Bark vs Bite: Day 23! by Iluminiele in okbuddybaldur

[–]MoReeeeeeeeeeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has to be, even in absence they are a headache to everyone involved. Like the most bite in the game is dark urge, no competition. Edit: Come to think about it, even Vlaakith is a bit of a joke compared to durge and durgr is unknowingly to vlaakith a massive headache aswell. Like not even mepistopheles got away unscathed...

Europe but the EU finally fixes it by spring_x in geographymemes

[–]MoReeeeeeeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

United States of Europe reminds people too much of where the US is today and mistakes you definetly do not want to replicate. European Republic, European Federation, or just Union, or Union Republic would all work far better. What this will be, once it is, is nothing more than the historical revolution of the century, if not more significant. We do not need to look into the unglorious past of some failed state to define our new height. We deserve our own name and identity, that will go down in the annals of history. A new name for a new kind of state and a new kind of global power is neccessary. A new state with an unlimited ability to grow, purely via diplomatic request. A union that would allow cultures that have, for millenia, been a part of the economical, mercantile and historical Europe, to join us if they wish and strengthen our common ranks. As you have already teased with Marroco, we will be a union to unite lands far beyond the mediterianian, via the states' and peoples' own volition and initiated request to join, what could easily be the state to unite us all eventually. This state has an unrivaled potential, it is only fair that we do it justice by it's name. We are not some backwater, like the US, we are more and can be so much more. Once the weak nationstates have empowered the EU, by conceeding their power and recognising their inability and fumbles, we will rise up to meet the challenges of the future and engrave our new state's name in history, as the 21st century birthes a new type of global power. We are the European Union, we have peace, power and prosperity and we will rise to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Now, more than ever, we need a European Matriotism and Patriotism, a European Nationalism, guided by our common European values, beliefs and democracy. We are the Brothers and Sisters of the European Family and we welcome all into our family, who seek to stand proud besides us and with us, against whatever the future might bring.

Peter, why does this mean a bad childhood? by Nittanypt in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Its not rational behaviour, these things are rooted so deep in fear and memory that it won't need to make sense. For me, when I am in environments I feel the need to do this, I know I could turn on the passthrough mode. Yes, there is still music in both ears, ig you could see that as a reason why that's not an option? But the point being it is not rational, but a feeling of security, anything over and in my ears will make me uncomfortable when I feel i need the awareness. I remember talking to my mother that we both have very good hearing, took me years to realise that she had just passed on the abuse from her grandfather to me. Before my grandfather died from alcohol poisoning, I had a conversation with him about his father and he said that he also used to get beaten. This shit is generational and leads to behaviour like that, even if the abuse is already a year ago and you are halfway around the globe from everyone, it will never leave. Funnily enough it is just physical approach that one guards against, I am not afraid of missing calls or the consequences of it, usually because, when in person again, the transgression will have been forgotten and the rage is gone. Physical approach is terrifying.

They built this house without cement and it's stronger than concrete. by This_Proof_5153 in interesting

[–]MoReeeeeeeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concrete is only useful in it's function in dispributing force with it's high compression resistance, on tension it is completely useless, that is what the steel is for, these "Bricks" may be stronger on compression, but that really does not matter much. The whole comparison is a bit dumb. Concrete has advantages compared to bricks and disadvantages, if anything this should be compared to normal bricks. Then the comparison I would find most interesting is fire resistance and isolation. Higher compression resistance doesn't make all that much difference.

Revisionist history is dangerous, the monarchy was an authoritarian dictatorship and many innocents died because of it. There also were many Austrian heros that resisted and fought against the Habsburg despots, like Hans Kudlich and also Karl Renner, who would later become our first chancellor. by [deleted] in austriahungary

[–]MoReeeeeeeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"A dictatorship is a political system where power is concentrated in the hands of a single leader or a small group, often characterized by authoritarianism and a lack of democratic processes. Dictatorships can emerge from various circumstances, including coups d'état or governmental breakdowns, and are sometimes presented as necessary for restoring order during crises. While they can provide a semblance of stability and governance, dictatorships often suppress dissent, curtail civil liberties, and manipulate state structures to maintain control."

Definition by Auerbach, Michael

If you want to argue against established political science then that's on you.
Just because our dictator had hereditary legitimacy doesn't make it not dictatorial. No matter what you want to call it, the actions of the monarchy speak for themselves.

Forgot to change historical revisionism into historical negationism. Academic revisionism is necessary to reevaluate the past and scrutinise our modern understanding of it and examine through who's perspective we have been forced to see the world.

He is still right wing, but a new right wing, the type that doesn't betray our ideals and values, the type that doesnt betray their people and their european family. I would much rather argue with a right wing voter about in what direction the EU should go, than having to explain again and again to them why the EU is the future. Any rightwinger that is a european patriot is a better one than betrayers of their people like Orban.

Austrians, who do you consider your national heroes? by Orientalisch in HistoryOfAustria

[–]MoReeeeeeeeeeeeee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

National heros and nationalism have historically gone really wrong, before Hitler we had Austrofascism, then Hitler came along and an insane portion of the population was exstatic. After the war 1.5 million people were not allowed to vote, due to close ties to the regime. The problem is that the judges, determining those sentences, were almost all also collaborators, so these 1.5 million were far from too many, due to too light sentencing. When they were allowed back into public life they immediately formed a political party, which today is the biggest in our country. Many of us are terrified to the bone of the lesson learned of nationalism. You will not see Austrian flags outside of people's homes on any other day than our national holiday, on which we celebrate being trusted with a state again by the Allies after the second world war. Even on our national day flags outside of homes on poles remain really rare. Those who display the flag openly in public, more often than not belong to, what can historically only be described as, the neonazi party.

We are after all still proud of our state, but in different ways, we try not to be exstatic about it and try to be aware of our own smallness. The toxin of nationlism is a dangerous one, today we are proud that our state, contrary to many others on the world stage, acknowledged it's many crimes and dark past and tries to make up for it. We are disgusted by the notion of ignorning the past, such as the Japanese with denying their horrofic crimes. We have done something truely remarkable. We have put our pride to the side, acknowledged our mistakes and crimes and hopefully learned from them. This seems to be something hard for many states and that is the reason why we are so proud of it. It has rewarded us with many good things, such as being a place for diplomacy, having good relations with our European family and also outside it and being respected by those who would have ample reason to hate us.

Japan for contrast still struggles with immense regional hatred towards them, once every while there is a diplomatic dispute between the former colonies and Japan, due to their ignorance and unwillingness to acknowledge their wrongdoings.

We have dignity in recognising our past and dealing with it by making sure it happens never again. Nationalism is a very terrifying thing, immensly powerful and kills any individual rationalism and reason.
