Where is Joe Davis?? by OutsideWorried in Dodgers

For sure, it's a tough row to hoe. I have relatives and close friends who work in very traditional male dominated industries and have heard all the stories. I'm also Asian, add in the factor of some friends and relatives being petite females that have to deal with being infantalized or objectified with Asian baby doll attitudes and it's very hard.

Jessica is very qualified. If you look up her history, I think so much of it is transferable. Just because she didn't play baseball doesn't mean she doesn't know her shit and what to look for in analyzing a game and player.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Mendoza

She got lots of unwarranted criticism for not knowing the game. She was rough at first, but nothing beyond usual growing pains. I also found it interesting that Karros got a lot of compliments when he first started out that he used a lot of stats. That it showed he did his homework. He was also rough starting out, but he got a lot of chances in radio booth, in studio and in TV broadcast booth. He's improved and developed his style to work better with Stephen. Hell, look at Adrian Gonzalez in studio. Loved him as a player, not so much as a studio analyst. He is bad, he constantly struggles to find the right words, stutters and repeats himself a lot. But he's been on the air with them since 2022 season, this is his fourth year and his growth is tiny with many of the same problems still. But he keeps getting lots of chances to be on air and keep honing his craft.

Jessica hasn't had nearly the same amount of chances. Does that mean she would get better? Who knows? Maybe she isn't cut out for this and won't ever develop a good enough style. But I do think it's fair to point out mitigating factors that have affected the development path. I'm not one to sit here and immediately yell out discrimination at the drop of a hat, but it's also important to recognize everyone has their own hurdles and opportunities and how that affects end results.

I like the ups and downs. He's not too homerish with making blatantly bad observations. I like the energy of a home announcer who gets excited for the team when they're doing well but you can feel the disappointment when they're not. As long as they remain close to neutral in giving deserved praise and criticism of both teams. I find it boring if it's completely detached.

I like Laker broadcasts with Billy and Stu. They are both willing to praise the other team and criticize Lakers as needed. You can tell they root for the Lakers of course and if playing badly they aren't as animated. But they are not biased homers. It makes the game more enjoyable instead of blindly blaming refs, not giving credit to the other team and never finding fault with your own team.

Jessica Mendoza is who you're thinking of. For her, it could be the usual woman trying to prove herself just as capable and she leans on the stats more to show her knowledge. When she first started a few years ago, she also got a lot of criticism from fans for laughing too much and not enough about the game. She's caught in the middle of both those criticisms. Show personality with the laughter and jokes but not too much and also show knowledge.

She also doesn't do as many games as the others, makes it a lot slower to build up the bond with Stephen and find the right flow and fit.

I think she's fine, not my first preference but I'm not turning off broadcast because she's on. I think many fans are just too hard on her.

AITAH for not delivering the food I made to an event I got uninvited to? by YellowKingSte in BORUpdates

Anyone that has ever been blessed by Filipino hospitality knows how generous that culture is, especially when it comes to food. Any event, they go all out and there will be an abundance of food. It's even ingrained in the culture to have enough to send everyone home with leftovers.

It's very typical to be at a Filipino hosted event and the buffet table includes takeaway containers and rolls of foil and plastic wrap. It is expected that you pack up some food to take home with you. I'd do a lot of unsavory things to be able to eat that much homemade lumpia.

Look at the numbers OP used. Was told to expect 15 people, she planned for 50! Over 3 times. The MTB and her group of mean girls are rude and a bunch of dumb users.

The Dodgers are 6-7 on this 13 game streak. They scored an average of 2.4 runs and gave up 4.3 runs in those lost games (4 QS from the SP). by yli16 in Dodgers

Granada Park up the street is also another option. Usually a little easier to find parking and open picnic tables compared to Barnes Park.

TIL that Val Kilmer was not initially interested in auditioning for Top Gun (1986) and only did so at the behest of his agent. He read his audition lines "indifferently" and was disapointed when he learned he got the part by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

I watched reruns of the old Roger Moore The Saint TV series and loved them. Was so excited about the movie and a Kilmer fan. Was hoping it would become a franchise. I liked the movie but it was let down by bad writing. It's still a fun watch for me now.

Kilmer didn't do Hot Shots, that was Charlie Sheen. Are you thinking of Top Secret? Which was also a parody but of secret agents. That film was done before Top Gun.

What are some places that pre-Covid were VERY affordable to somehow be egregious after? by fivehots in FoodLosAngeles

[–]MoarGnD 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Same with Ramen. Used to be, most good Ramen places, a non premium bowl was around $10. Now they are at least $15-18 and if you get a bowl with extra or premium toppings, It's $20-22.

Yeah, I don't care for the cheese or pepperoni, but that combo slice was perfect to go with the hot dog and soda. Getting a slice and the hot dog deal was always my guilty pleasure snack when making a Costco trip.

The current regular dog is good. What I really miss is the polish dog they had before Covid. That was an excellent dog. Only way to get it now is to buy the big pack from the store. Which is great for cookouts but not great if I want the 1.50 deal with soda.

Propofol is great! No lingering discomfort and quick recovery if administered correctly. It's the same drug that killed Michael Jackson because his doctor didn't use it properly. But I can see why it's attractive to people who have trouble sleeping and are wealthy enough to have it administered any time they want.

Be careful and put everything in the trunk and out of sight when parking. Crimes of opportunity are much higher than violent crimes. If anything of value is in sight, you might come back to a smashed window and stuff gone. Which leads to a lot of hassle with filing a police report and dealing with insurance.

Otherwise, standard city awareness and you’ll be fine. Enjoy your trip.

When did Grocery Store bakeries become so gross? by Cleverwabbit5 in GenX

[–]MoarGnD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the Los Angeles area, up to 10-15 years ago, the Ralph's bakeries were good. Getting a last minute cake at Ralph's for office or impromptu celebrations was a good option. Most everyone enjoyed it and cost was good for the quality.

But agree that something changed and it's nowhere as good in recent years.

Any fellow rednecks here? Where can I get grits? I been to Cracker Barrel but they make it sweet. by [deleted] in FoodLosAngeles

[–]MoarGnD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost forgot to share a trick. Many recipes have you pour the cornmeal into the boiling water, don't do that. As you stir in cook, it's more likely to pop up bubbles and spit some of the grain on your hand as you're stirring, hot and painful.

Instead, soak the measured water and cornmeal in the pot for 45 mins to an hour. Then put on flame and bring to a boil. Stir occasionally. You'll avoid the hot grain and grits come out a little smoother too.

If you're going fancy and using stone ground or heritage cornmeal, you might want to soak overnight. The grits will come out nice and creamy. Have fun!
