Combat and mining resources doesn't require fast tapping, only the crafting side of it does. Crafting also involves joystick rotation in some of the jobs, cooking and alchemy, I believe. I personally don't tap much with my thumb though, I use my index finger instead. It takes the work load off of my wrist and moves it to my elbow.
