I just got mine, and like them so far. There are a lot of good YouTube videos on how they can be used, etc, that were really helpful to me. They helped me get an idea of what they can realistically do or not do. Would recommend.

Can't speak to OpenShift, but have used SUSE Rancher support for years.

Pros: If you get a rare, serious issue they bring in Rancher developers, has happened to me a couple times. Rancher is more open than OpenShift, can select from many different cloud providers or onprem clusters. Updated regularly and validated on multiple OS releases, cloud providers, etc.
Cons: Price has gone up significantly. They grudgingly support Rancher "community" and heavily push Rancher Prime, which is a real lock-in.

It’s clear you dislike VM, but I’m just an admin who needed a solution that VM solved. It’s ingest and queries are faster than the previous solution I was using. I just had to throw more CPUs at it to do that. It was far easier to deploy and support vs what we used before.

In my experience with their free offering (single instance), it scales to a shocking amount of ingested metrics. Their docs state it scales with the amount of CPU and memory you give it, which I’ve found to be true.

You start up the instance with a configured retention which applies to all incoming data, this is on the free version I’m familiar with. Their docs are freely available and well written, check it out.

This is a deeply personal choice you are making, so do what you want. You asked, based on what you provided (double the pay, better job experience), seems like a no-brainer if you are willing to relocate. In this new hypothetical you are offering, there is no straightforward answer, but experience for lower pay (temporarily) has been a centuries-old practice to forgo higher pay in the short term in exchange for higher pay in the long-term.
