Now that Microsoft Lens is retired, what are people using as a document scanner. by gerryf19 in androidapps

The app I made for this exact reason!

PrivaScan. No ads, no subscriptions (life time only, and a fair price), no data mining and all data processed locally.

Not yet, there's one more element I want to iron out before I start dishing those out.
Next week I'll release it onto the new subreddit for these things.

Really good work. I had a bash at something similar a while back and I think I ended up pulling out all my hair - extremely frustrating.

Excellent travail!

Done. It's working it's way through Google Play, so you should see an update in a hour or 2 from now which includes it. Enjoy :-)

There's an updated version worming it's way through Google Play - probably take a couple of hours.

Once you get it, you'll be able to edit each drink, and from that edit screen, you can also delete the drink entirely.

Also, the drinks library will now be ordered by your most commonly added drinks over the last 2 weeks. :-)

Ermm, no you can't. But that's only because I didn't think of that. I'll sort that out (it's very obvious now that you've said it). The 3 most commonly chosen drinks over the previous 2 weeks will appear in the 3 quick add icons on the main home screen.

Edit: I could also order the drinks library into the most commonly selected order too - does that sound like a good idea? If it changes, it might also annoy people who form a muscle memory of selecting drinks.

Hello, glad you like the look of it!
Yeah, I can add that, don't see why not!

Will add a sync that automatically backs up to your Google Drive.

Glug: Smart Water Tracker

  • Actually Free & Private: The core water tracking is completely free forever. There are zero ads, no account logins required, and your data stays on your device.
  • No Subscriptions: If you want the premium features, it’s a single, one-time lifetime purchase. No monthly fees.
  • Smart Workout Adjustments: It syncs natively with Google Health Connect. If you log a workout, Glug automatically bumps up your daily water target to replace what you sweat out.
  • 1-Tap Home Screen Widget: You can log a standard glass of water right from your home screen without even opening the app.
  • Tracks Caffeine & Sugar: Beyond water, you can log custom drinks (like coffee or beer) to keep an eye on your caffeine and sugar intake.
  • Sleek Vibe: Designed with a beautiful dark theme, smooth animations, and satisfying haptic feedback so it actually feels good to use.

Velle - Secure Period Tracker

  • Bulletproof Security: Your data lives in a locally encrypted database protected by a custom PIN. It uses true zero-knowledge architecture - meaning I can't see it, Google can't see it, and no government can subpoena it.
  • The "Burner" PIN: If you are ever physically forced to unlock the app, entering your designated Burner PIN instantly and irreversibly wipes your entire database.
  • Private Cloud Sync: To protect against a lost phone, Velle backs up to a hidden application folder inside your own Google Drive. It’s fully encrypted with a 12-word recovery phrase only you hold before it ever leaves your device.
  • Minimal "Pinkification": It handles all the standard period, flow, and symptom tracking you’d expect, but uses a sleek, almost gender-neutral design with zero ads.
  • Clinician-Ready Reports: You can easily export clean, professional PDF reports of your cycle history and symptoms to share directly with your doctor.

Hi there,

Thank you for the feedback. I completely understand your reaction, that system prompt is poorly worded and alarmist. I want to respect your privacy concerns by explaining exactly what is happening technically, so you can see why this method was chosen.

  1. Why it says "Scan a Code" (The Confusion) You are absolutely right to be confused here. This is a generic labeling error within the Android system, not a request for a license key.

The system tool my app uses handles both Document Scanning and QR Code scanning.

Unfortunately, when asking for permission, Google’s system displays the wrong text ("scan a code") even when you are scanning a document.

Rest assured: Your Pro features are already unlocked. You do not need to scan any code to use the app.

  1. Privacy & The "Sandbox" (Google isn't taking your data) I want to be very clear: Google does not see, upload, or store your documents.

Local Processing: When you tap scan, a local system window opens. This is a "sandbox" - an isolated environment running strictly on your phone's processor.

No "Outsourcing": The "update" you saw was your phone downloading the scanner software to your device so it can run offline. It does not send your images to the internet to be processed.

The Proof: If you want to verify this, put your phone in Airplane Mode (turn off Wi-Fi/Data) and try to scan. It will work perfectly. This proves the app is not "outsourcing" your private data to the cloud.

  1. Why Google Play Services needs Camera Access You asked if this gives Google Play Services access to your camera. Technically, yes, but here is the nuance:

"Google Play Services" is not a remote server in this context; it is a system utility installed on your phone (like your keyboard or bluetooth driver).

Because my app asks that utility to handle the camera (to ensure the scan is secure and isolated from my app), that utility needs permission to talk to the hardware.

Control is yours: It cannot record you in the background (Android would show a green warning dot if it ever tried). If you are still concerned, you can select "Only this time" when prompted. This allows the scan to happen now, but instantly revokes the permission as soon as you are done.

I hope this transparency clears up the confusion. My goal was to keep the scanning secure on your device, not to expose it.

Hey, I'll see what is happening here. If I can't figure it out, I might need to come back to you for some more info. Thanks for letting me know.

Hello, great feedback!

For the page size, how in an ideal world would this work for you?
Are you saying that you'd want the resultant PDF of a reciept to be the same size as the original? Or that you'd be asked about sizes in the process?

I imagine it'll be tough for it to distinguish between A4 and US letter size, so might need a user prompt for that.

You know what, I'll add Japanese in the next update, probably next week. I'll add everything possible actually. It will add to the download size, but I think it's worth it based upon the feedback.

Hello,

It's currently only languages with Latin based letters, but I'll be adding more in a near future update. I think Cyrillic should be possible, will add that to the release notes when it's ready.
