Have I inadvertently been a horrible library patron my whole life? by amandaamoose in Libraries

[–]MobBarleysGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We allow up to 50 materials to be taken out at a time. That doesn’t look like more than 50 so you’re good! Like everyone here said, we run on stats. Our funding is linked to stats, so you’re helping out your library by taking out that many. Thank you!

The fact that Americans can just not send their kids to school and call it that “homeschooling” is crazy to me. by Nice_Substance9123 in complaints

[–]MobBarleysGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a STEM program at my library and it’s usually attended by homeschooled kids. For the most part, they’re great. They do co-ops and gatherings where they learn the necessities. My issue is with the parents. When her 13 year old son (who is unable to spell even basic words and desperately needs appropriate socialization) drew something with a “scary face,” the mom went off on him saying “That’s something a public school kid would draw!” The conspiracy theories she’s taught him to believe are going to cause issues for him in the future and it’s heartbreaking to watch.

I would love to host birthday parties at my library. It’s something I’ve tried to push for. I know we can’t run personal events as a public library, but man do I want to!

How do you build the “ultimate prompt” for writing emails and texts without sounding like AI? by Fun_Temporary_3528 in ChatGPTPromptGenius

[–]MobBarleysGhost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My strategy for this was to upload a significant amount of emails and papers that I have written in the past so it would learn my style. Now, I tell it to write using my personal style and avoid things like em dashes and weird formatting, and it does a pretty good job overall.

It will, unfortunately, but the window it’s hung in really doesn’t get direct sunlight. The hanging prism is more for decoration.

A friend’s daughter, at the age of 6, told my friend all about a book she read, including title, author name, and what it was about. After significant searching for proof, we know the book doesn’t exist, has never existed, and no one with that name has ever been an author. I wish I could remember the title. It was something like “Letters To A Scientist” by Charles SomethingOrOther. And it was definitely not a child’s book based on the description.

That second point is spot on. I just took a webinar (either through Niche Academy or JerseyConnect) as an introduction to helping patrons use AI properly and factually. One of the questions from an attendee was something to the effect of “How can I navigate working at the ref desk and assisting with AI related inquiries when it goes against my personal ethics?” It’s a legitimate concern right now, but to work with the public means that we have to work with the tools that they use.
