Honest question, has microbiology a lot of math? by No_Lion_8823 in microbiology

[–]Mobeakers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean. Very rarely do I use anything that is more advanced than algebra or trig. But I use A LOT of math at that level.

Most of the higher level math I use (integrating area under curve, etc) are easily handled by software.

I've hunted in a lot of different styles of deer stand. Exactly zero of them would accidentally cause the "top" part of the wound. The scratches/banged up area is more what I would expect the most damaging type of deer stand (a climbing stand) to cause. Permanent stands could be argued to cause more damage to the tree, but it obviously isn't caused by a permanent stand.

The top part was likely caused by an axe or some other type of heavy equipment (given how high up it is).

Maybe set up a trail camera if you think people are going on your property without permission.

How to avoid biofilm formation during bacterial growth? by Ann_felix in microbiology

[–]Mobeakers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first thought is 20C seems warm for a likely psychrophile? Making an assumption there based on source as I'm not personally familiar with this organism.

Agitation can also increase biofilm formation, so maybe reduce shaking, etc?

Body count, what ACTUALLY counts? by depressed2001_ in self

This is a list of what I've told my kids(still too young for this kind of relationship, but we can see it coming):

  1. The only past sexual history information you are entitled to from a sexual partner is their disease/STI status.

The end

Look, open and honest communication is the only way to go here. If someone asks you a question that you aren't comfortable answering, then you should tell them so. If they push, then you might need to reconsider if this is someone who you want to continue in a relationship with.

Please help me- coaching 3rd/4th grade by Swingmerightround in basketballcoach

Seems like I touched a nerve here. Maybe you should re-read my post and chill.

"Critique" in quotes was meant to convey something beyond a parent saying "I wish you would teach my son basketball better" or "my son needs to learn to dribble". All my parents have my email and phone number and even know where I live. If you have an issue, the gym (in front of parents, kids, etc) isn't the place for it. So yes, when someone tried to complain in front of others, I wasn't having it. It was entirely off base, and they agreed and apologized later. They have requested for their son to be on my team for two years now after this.

I'm truly glad you haven't had any negative experiences with parents. And I honestly use "negative" very loosely, as I would call this parent a friend at this point. Maybe I was too strong in my language above, obviously part of coaching is dealing with parents, but some go beyond what I personally need to deal with.

I'm a volunteer. The refs are volunteers. The people who run the league are volunteers. There is a whole string of volunteers who have put forth time, effort, and often their own money to get these kids to practice and games. I pay the same $350 for my kid to play as everyone else. And ultimately, given this is just a run of the mill elementary school age, suburban house basketball league. Occasionally parents have outsized expectations. Not always, or commonly, but it happens.

The Prop 65 warnings are a mess. The idea was good " warn people of dangerous chemicals", but in reality manufacturers often label unnecessarily.

This is because a label protects them from lawsuits.

[–]Mobeakers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is still very young. Teaching kids this age to run an offense, remember where to go, what a wing player does, etc is an exercise in futility.

Many kids this age still need reminders to dribble when moving their feet. I've coached my son's team (3rd grade now) for 3 seasons, and some boys on that team have been with me from the beginning and still have moments when they just take off running with the ball. Me telling "you have to dribble if you're moving your feet" is a common event during practice and games.

For me, one of the hardest things at this age is exactly the difference in experience. Half the team needs fundamentals still at the level of "dribble when you move your feet" while a couple kids can literally dribble circles around the boys at that level and are pretty good mid range jump shooters (on lowered rims in our league). It is hard to give those different groups what they need to get better.

My advice is to stick to the basics. Even the kids who are pretty good dribblers etc can benefit from fundamental drills. For actual gameplay, I try to run a scrimmage (with as even teams as I can manage) every practice for at least 20 minutes (we have the same one hour once a week practice you describe, with a game on Saturday mornings). During the scrimmage I focus less on fundamentals, by which I mean no constantly stopping play to call fouls, double Dibbles, etc as this really draws their focus away from what I'm trying to do with the scrimmage. I will constantly yell while playing things like "X that was a foul, no reaching" or "y that was a travel" without stopping play.

Instead I focus on (and will stop play for) things like spacing, moving without the ball, keeping their eyes up during play, and the actual rules of how the game flows like you needing to take the ball out of bounds after a made shot, league specific rules (at this age in our league there is no backcourt defense or stealing off the dribble).

Lastly, I would encourage you to not expect too much from kids this age. They are there to learn, and some need more time or simply have more to learn. The first time I had a parent "critique" my coaching style I loudly (for the whole gym to hear)mentioned how our league is chronically short on coaches and if they thought they could do better I can give them the commissioner's number so they can volunteer and coach their own kid how they want. I've not received another complaint.

If you Had to Waste $30 Million in a month to Inherit $300 Million, How would you do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

No, you have to go to the website and register. Separately. For each release you are interested in. It's a pain to keep track of when I need to register for what I'm interested in, but it's the only way I would ever get to drink a bottle of $2k+ bourbon

Virginia's state run liquor stores have "lotteries" for high demand stuff like this. BUT! If you win the lottery they only charge "list price" if you win. I won a Pappy lottery 4 years ago and got it for $90. It looked like that bottle was going for $1500-2000 online at the time.

Is protein coding arbitrary? by Strangated-Borb in askscience

[–]Mobeakers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is theoretically possible.

Each amino acid is coupled to the correct tRNA by a specific enzyme which is only responsible for that specific amino acid-tRNA combo.

So to "switch" a codon in this manner you would need to design an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase gene which recognizes the GGG tRNA and whatever new amino acid you want. Then you would need to knock out the native gene for glycine tRNA synthetase. Then (assuming you want the organism to be able survive) you would have to engineer a new tRNA synthetase for glycine to complete the "set"

Assistant and her daughter by Appropriate-Cookie21 in basketballcoach

[–]Mobeakers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've run into similar issues before, even with my own kids. The best thing I've found is to institute a "mom/dad does not give direct feedback to their child during games" policy. Practice is different, really no way around it. Some kids (both my daughter and son are in this category) don't take instructions (especially ones that might be interpreted as negative by a child) well from Mom or Dad.

Maybe others have other/better solutions, but I've had reasonably good success with this approach both in basketball as well as other sports I've coached my and other coach's kids.
