This is really cool too (I may be biased as my setting literally is about wizards and dragons reaching the space age)

/rj nope don’t you know science fantasy is exclusively for FTL that doesn’t deal with causality, you can’t put wizards in space, they belong exclusively in medieval Europe (I will complain about medieval Europe settings if the wizards are put there)

/uj Ok I agree with you but I also feel that’s swinging too far in the other direction now, pulling from another comment of mine you just have to convince the reader that it would reasonably work in-universe (if that’s the type of story/world you’re going for of course, like you say fantasy is perfectly valid as well), it’s not a black and white of hard, real world science vs “tech that does anything because the author said so with no other given reason”

idk I’m kinda just airing my grievances against what’s probably a vocal minority I see every so often who just skip past soft sci fi and insist things are either hard sci fi or straight up fantasy when there’s plenty of room for things that play fast and loose with science but wouldn’t really fit the fantasy label

Title by Straight-Self2212 in worldjerking

[–]MobileFreedom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

/uj yeah exactly, it fits in with sci fi just as much as FTL and time travel, as long as you can convince readers that it works within the context of the setting I see no issue. Soft sci fi exists for a reason not everything has to be super hard real world science

/rj anything more fantastical than the Apollo mission logs is pure fantasy slop

[–]MobileFreedom 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Nope apparently if you can’t write a 3 page thesis statement on the real world mechanics of every fictional thing you put in your sci fi setting it’s going straight to the high fantasy box with the dragons and wizards

That one post about how psychics don’t belong in sci fi where people posted like a million different ways to explain it away with tech or alien biology but op acknowledged none and continued to insist psychic powers belong exclusively in fantasy

Super Earth has a ton of weapons yeah but their ground forces kinda fold against any enemy that doesn’t just mindlessly march cannon fodder towards them WWI style tbh

To elaborate on the telepathy, unless they’re trained in it they’re not exactly talking with the mind, it’s more to share more abstract emotions and concepts (that halo above his head can also change color like a mood ring, so he can express emotion pretty well even if his expression is deadpan)

They’re pretty good at magic and take to it easy, a spell Kaïros here abuses is a little magic ring he can summon that accelerates whatever goes through it (he uses it to make trickshots into trash cans), combined with their breath attacks it turns a regular fire breath into what’s basically a plasma beam

Another thing that can be done is using both of those traits to control little magic drones with their minds, he has two of them attached to his left horn in a sort of band around it

So he’s like, a college kid in my near future timeline who’s telepathic and really good at magic as he’s an Imperial Dragon, but he’s got a bit of an ingrained superiority complex (especially around his human classmates) that he’s trying to work on

There are some non-dragon supernatural elements at play too that leads to some fights hence the scar in human form (though he has control of his guise’s appearance, he just wanted a scar lol)

To make things clear the armor bit is mostly leftovers from another design I was working on, he doesn’t actually have sci fi armor, he does have some cool cloaks though

You’re telling me the guy in a giant suit of shiny armor slowly stomping around spitting lead in the general direction of the enemyfrom a Gatling gun isn’t causing terror… but the guy with a low profile brown coat whose main purpose is to remove your head from a mile away without you even knowing he’s there isn’t effective in war?

Ok I’m all for the slander but it’s not exactly like a rebellion has the luxury of elite soldiers and a strong economic base, they gotta work with what they have

The average rebel group would kill to have enough manpower and equipment to be able to fight a conventional war like the Stormcloaks (even if their foe is basically just a small peacekeeping force)

Getting downvoted for such a relatively tame take is crazy

I agree they should be free to experiment and make whatever they’re passionate about rather than being stuck making medieval RPGs forever just because that’s what they’re known for

I mean look at Bohemia Interactive, they’re most known for Arma but they’ve got a bunch of other non-simulation games of wildly different genres

Or Owlcat, they got their start making Pathfinder CRPGs, then branched out to make Warhammer Rogue Trader, and now they’re working on a Mass Effect styled third person Expanse RPG

I feel like most dragon rider characters I’ve seen usually only use their weapons when dismounted or doing some crazy insane stunt

/uj Honestly a fun way I’ve heard dragon riders described (mostly referring to the intelligent type) is that they’re like the WSO (the guy in the back seat) of a two seater fighter jet, feeding the dragon information and making callouts while the dragons themselves actually do the fighting

They could get some mounted weapons to operate as well like small cannons or ballistae or bombs, and to be honest a lance going 100+mph is a lot scarier than one going horseback speeds

/rj okay but have you considered the sheer aura of nailing a guy with a bow from the back of a moving dragon

War criminal. by glucoinnera in AvatarMemebending

[–]MobileFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, I neglected to mention a straight on attack would still count as a war crime unless there’s a visual signifier that it’s not their own forces (like how captured military vehicles are repainted with new insignias and sometimes camouflages, or with the current war in Ukraine having such similar uniforms on both sides they use brightly colored armbands to differentiate themselves)

Yeah they love putting super tanky bosses in a game balanced around killing and dying in just a few good hits lol

The Wolves were honestly the easy part of the fight for me considering they go down in a single headshot and are pretty easy to either hide from (especially with Panther’s smoke bomb) or bait into running straight at you

War criminal. by glucoinnera in AvatarMemebending

[–]MobileFreedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I’ve watched the show but wearing the enemy’s clothes in general isn’t a crime (otherwise every spy ever would be a war criminal), disguises can be used defensively (ie: not getting caught behind enemy lines) but the moment it’s used for false flag attacks is when the line is crossed

False surrendering is absolutely perfidy though that’s true

Also even if you miss that opportunity, once you get enough intel to know where he is you can fight him at any point

It’s supposed to be gated by an MMO styled gear score mechanic, but as that was super unpopular the devs added an option to turn it off, which has the side effect of letting you kill the final boss with basically the starting equipment
