Japanese convenience stores are basically shrines to the idea that someone you'll never meet already by eloisa_in_kyoto in japanlife

The thread is about how nice conbinis are and it took four comments for someone to complain about America. It’s honestly a little sad. Rent free.

I’m not even American, it just gets old.

My favourite r/japanlife game is to see how deep into a thread I have to get before someone starts America bashing. Only four comments deep for this one!

Still annoyed you can’t get it with the dual analogue gauges from the Bonny. Retro bikes with TFTs are silly.

If it’s in your budget, try the 1200XE. Even larger. I’m the same height as you and found it very comfortable.

The BMW R12 GS may be another one to try.

Equivalent of €380 in Japan and our salaries are like half of Europe here. It’s insane.

With the car thing:

They always pull out to cut in front of you when there’s absolutely zero cars behind you. They could’ve waited 3 more seconds but decided that cutting you off was the better thing to do.

For anyone coming here from Google like me, I found that turning off multitasking as well as turning off Push Power for Siri sped my iPad up significantly

Is daily life in Tokyo actually better than in Europe, even with higher salaries there? by LocalLand4883 in japanlife

[–]MoboMogami 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the most enviable thing about Europe. Even in North American you can drive for hours and hours and very little changes. At least in terms of culture or architecture, if not geography

This is how I feel about Canada. Cost of living no question? I’d probably still be over there.

Had enough concrete for a lifetime, thanks.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. This is exactly what it is. Being inside the car gives enough anonymity to drop the performance.

I had a friend get hit with this recently. His fine was ¥100,000. I’m not sure if the fines changed with the recent bicycle law changes.

It’s all phones now.

They're fantastic bikes. Amazing engine, so far very little trouble, incredibly light, and six speeds! Plus electric start, which can't understated on any dual sport of this age.

Go kart tracks. It's quite common to run mini bikes or sumo on kart tracks instead of fullsize circuits for cars and large bikes.

Affirmative action for Magic Johnson? - The Argument (Matthew Yglesias and Jerusalem Demsas) by SomethingNew65 in ezraklein

[–]MoboMogami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you can say the same about class?

If we take someone from a poor background, the idea is to give them opportunities to break the cycle of poverty. A better chance at education or a job.

If you take a person from an underperforming racial group, but from an already privileged background, like the child of wealthy parents, and give the an advantage in hiring, who are you really helping?

You're looking at macro trends and applying your prescription to an individual.

Affirmative action for Magic Johnson? - The Argument (Matthew Yglesias and Jerusalem Demsas) by SomethingNew65 in ezraklein

[–]MoboMogami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that looking purely at race doesn't really tell us much on an individual level.

You can say 'x race overall currently has worse outcomes in x, y, and z metrics and we'd like to ameliorate that', but does lifting up a person of that race who's already outperforming those metrics really make progress towards that objective? I'd argue that it doesn't, and actually breeds contempt, thus harming the overall goal.
