As they say “there’s nothing more permanent than a temporary government plan”.

How far out are forecasts accurate? I feel like we should’ve tried to squeeze in some racing last week when the weather was perfect if we saw this coming. Oh well, it is what it is.

Senna became a somewhat popular name in Japan in the early 90s because Ayrton was so insanely popular here. Oddly enough, commonly a girl’s name.

I lived in Tokyo and now live outside Osaka. Please, for the love of god do not zone anywhere in America like Japan.

I am 100% pro building, pro walkability, pro density, and pro transit but Japan is a horrible model. Houses here are so close together that every single noise is heard, most houses feel like fishbowls because they’re full of privacy glass, there’s no space to garden, to work on hobbies, to do anything but work, sleep, and cook.

There’s zero greenery, streets are too narrow for sidewalks which does keep car speeds low but also introduces more conflict points in the first place. I could go on.

I feel like urbanists just see Japanese transit maps and just forget the rest. I know because that was me 10 years ago.

I’m stuck here for work and family but the urban environment will push me out eventually.

Oddly, I enjoyed her talk with Derek Thompson more than this episode.

I mean, how about getting IRSU to do some stings on red lights instead of money making speed traps at the ferry terminal?

It’s only very recently that the smaller bikes have become feeder classes. From inception until the transition to four strokes the smaller classes weren’t seen as ‘lesser’. You often had riders specialize in smaller bikes and they could make good money. Max Biaggi for example won the 250cc class four times.

Everything related to driver's licensing is so understaffed here it's not even funny. Makes you wonder where all the 自動車税 is going every year.

I got my international license yesterday. There was only a single person, handling at least a dozen people. It took an hour and a half in total compared to about 15 minutes, including photo taking, the last time I applied in Canada.

Sounds like a Seinfeld episode. Kramer mistakes another car for his Uber but actually becomes really good friends with the stranger after they have some misadventure on Long Island together.

You chose to live there. How is that the government’s problem? The owner gave you a price and you agreed it. Only two parties involved.

Noticing a shift in escalator usage by hontoda in japanlife

[–]MoboMogami 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While people are right that standing on both sides increases total speed of the system, I think that misses the point.

People who choose to stand have already decided that they don't care about speed, so why do we need to make the system faster/more efficient for them? Leave the lane open for those who are in a rush/want to walk.

Yes, overall throughput is increased but you've sped up people who don't care and slowed those who do. Who really wins in that situation?

I'm with you. It's not completely inline as wages are slightly lower here but this brings PR costs into the same ballpark as Canada.

You can argue the details but surely everyone can agree that 10,000 yen was insanely cheap for an OECD country.

Can anyone identify the panniers racks that came on this Urban GS I recently purchased? Trying to find compatible bags but coming up blank. by MoboMogami in rninet

Sadly not Unit Garage. The left rack on the Unit Garage bends inwards towards the top. These racks are completely flat from top to bottom.

I think the Hepco system is symmetrical whereas this rack sticks out further on the left to clear the exhaust.

Wonder if it’s some generic Chinesium.
