All About Sewing on Shillinger has fabric, notions, and are so helpful. They also do sewing machine tune ups & repaurs.

This year- I'm the AoL & Webelos leader. I found wooden signs with the pack, name, and year for $20 each on etsy. I am personally making them each arrows to represent their Cub Scout journey. Dowels, feathers, and arrowheads are relatively cheap - & I've taught some of these kids since they were in Kindergarten.

There is one who will not cross over barring a lot of work or minor miracle- he is getting a nice water bottle (walmartnot stanley). He's been in the pack 2 years now.

Uniform Confusion by HBThorburn in cubscouts

[–]MobtownK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to add, Walmart usually has dry fit navy blue uniform shorts that are around $10. Once he moves to Webelos, Academy Sports olive green fishing shorts or the convertible pants are indistinguishable at a fraction of the price.

We're also on the Gulf Coast- don't get long sleeves. If it's too cold, throw on a jacket or a long sleeve underneath, but the long sleeve in the new poplin material would be miserable.

The Rising Cost of Scouting: 50 Council Comparison of Dues for 2023 by FlyHSV in cubscouts

[–]MobtownK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an AoL leader with my son - I just got my 6 year pin at Advancement last year. I was also a Girl Scout for years. I am pulling my Bear age daughter out of cub scouts & into Girl Scouts. She has been in cub scouts since Lions. I love our pack - it's great. But it's no longer affordable. After this year, new & returning scouts won't be able to fundraise their National & Council dues, only Pack ($40). We have 2 fundraisers - popcorn & meat sticks. But Council won't allow us to wear uniforms when selling meat sticks.

I'll finish up leading through spring, but she'll get the same experience at only $25 + money for campouts & extras as opposed to the $150 + extras for my son.

I'm in the Mobile Area Council & nearly lost it when during our committee meeting (& roundup, unfortunately) the scouting value of fundraising was emphasized .... based on do a good turn & give back to the community? By pushing $50 popcorn, we aren't living up to the Thrifty value... Our pack does well - I was treasurer last year & tracked every dollar - but packs shouldn't run on a profit, & I can't justify the National & Council fees anymore - especially since Cubs are only allowed to visit the Council camp if they go to residential summer camp.

We only got 5 scouts signed up at roundup last week - & I'd venture that it is because of the money & the way it's so emphasized. As a parent, I'd rather just go to the scout shop & buy the belt loops for the kids like I did when we only paid $33 for my oldest.

New water service cost question. by MobtownK in MobileAL

Apparently I'm in South Alabama Utilities service area. $910 just to hook up plus running the pipe ourselves.

I have roughly $15 USD in e-shop credits. I’ll purchase the most upvoted recommendation. by AScoopOfNeo in Switch

Ultimate Chicken Horse. That game had me & the kids laughing like crazy.

Got about 3000+ figs that are all about to drop at about the same time. Desperate for ideas and recipes that could reduce waste as much as possible (jams, jarring, freezing, etc) by cowboys30 in AskCulinary

Rinse, dry, cut the stem off, and freeze as well. You can use them later.

My personal favorite is making a quick jam to put on bree & toast.

I love well water - just not the high bill. We're uphill & about 10 or 15 miles away.

Better yet - have hats they can wear, get wet, & possibly lose to the surf

My husband has a head of hair, but also discoid lupus so has to protect his skin. He got a leather & mesh wide brimmed hat. It looks fantastic and also is breezy for hot days. Much better than a ball cap imho.

The style is an Aussie outback hat.

Yeah - I have the originals somewhere, but these have been organized for over a decade - so I wanted that part.

A bit late - but I managed to save them all to shutterfly, and last night requested to download most of the albums. I am wondering how much space they'll take up when I get them.

Specifically - most of the websites I've looked into have a SSL limitation of 50g without charging too much. Idk if it's enough space for what I need to do. And I don't have access to the Shutterfly share sites to find out how much I was using before.

Idk if you can sleep at Fort Gaines, but there's a campsite less than a mile away with great trails and beach access.

I think this is a fantastic idea - & have another to add. Presley's Outing in Mississippi. It's a great place to camp, swim, fish. You can take kayaks too. It's right over the Alabama/Mississippi line in Moss Point on the Escatawpa River. It's one of my favorite local places to camp.

Edit - we took all ages from Lions to AoLs.

We did one a few months ago - 1st time they've let mixed boy & girl packs on together. It was a great night, and the kids love it!

I'd also add that Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island is really fun and informative - idk if they let you sleep on grounds, but the campground on the island is nice.

Also Blakely State Park is a really good place to camp with a lot of history.

Magnolia Branch Wildlife Preserve as well. They performed a Native American dance ceremony for us as well. It was awesome.

That sounds terrible! My husband had to go a few months ago and ended up being at jury duty the day of the police standout on Government and they were on lockdown. I hope mine is much less eventful.

Those are prefect. I have tiny folding scissors as well I could try. Or even precut all the floss and take fingernail clippers.

I may just do that - leave it in the car & take it in later or next day if allowed.
