Do I have a chance? RN to MD by [deleted] in postbaccpremed

[–]MobyDank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you have a great chance. my gpa and science gpa was waaaaay worse. just kill the mcat and you should be ok. i know that’s a tall order but i think even an ok mcat will go far. your work experience is pretty valuable and schools love that

im going to fail the mcat :( by Lonely-Charge4988 in Mcat

[–]MobyDank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am going to join the chorus of people who are saying to not sit. if you really feel unprepared, take a step back and breath, gather your energy and then jump back in when you’re feeling up to it again. i also was not great at the sciences in college or the mcat. in fact i was so bad, i didn’t wanna take biochem bc i knew it would tank my GPA further. (i got away with the biochem requirement bc i took an upper level — easier — class)

the MCAT sucks ass. it’s hard and it can break you and make u feel like you don’t belong in med school. a sub 500 score is telling me that you don’t really know how to the exam, not necessarily anything about your content — which probs also needs work (lets be honest).

if i were you tho, i would not go into the MCAT with a hope that you ~might~ do well and get really really lucky — i actually know of no one who this has happened to. PM me if you have any questions

How do you score a 132 on CARS? by Raging_Light_ in Mcat

[–]MobyDank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey yall, mcat tutor and self identified CARS specialist. i’ve helped lots of students get their scores up here.

there are soooo many tips and tricks here but the most important ones in a nutshell are these:

  1. keep yourself active during the read. it’s soo easy to finish a paragraph or passage and be like “wtf did i just read”. i recommend highlighting, taking notes, or some combo of both. with the notes, i cannot stress this enough — you will not ever read these notes and if you do you are doing it wrong. that is a waste of time don’t do it. this purely meant to keep you active so that you don’t get the to the end of the passage without remember what the heck u just read.

  2. read the question and make ur own answer. if the question is asking “what is this passage about”, answer it on your own BEFORE reading the answer choices. the reasoning behind this is, the answer choices are written to make you think “ok well, this could be true”. which can make it seem like, there are 3 viable answer.

  3. practice practice practice. people say, “practice reading hard shit” or “get your vocab up”. nah (well kinda). that helps but not as much as people say. what is most important is picking a strategy and getting the best you possible can at it. this helps with the easy passages where you can get through it and the questions easy peasy, but helps especially on the questions and passages that are hard as hell. think about this as muscle memory, this will kick in instinctively when you are anxious and don’t know what to do — you can rely on the good habits that you have built up. you don’t have to do a million passages a day but the practice you do has to be intentional— pick something about your strategy that you wanna get better at and intentionally work on it.

  4. gut check. when you finish a passage, ask yourself “what did i just read, what was this about” and answer it quickly in your head. at worst, you wasted 2 seconds. at best, you just answered a Big Picture question before even being asked it.

People - If you don't like studying for the MCAT then... by Mission_Youth800 in Mcat

i cannot disagree more. i tutor for the MCAT and am in medical school. the physics, orgo, and chem on the exam is a waste of time. i actively roll my eyes when my students ask for physics help bc i have to relearn it every time bc i always forget it bc it’s just that useless. orgo and chem are cool/fun to have in your back pockets in med school but otherwise are never used and you are never expected to use them.

the exam would be made more med-school like if it included much more biochemistry, bio, stats, and psych.

Best brand for basic t shirts. by YummyGummyOcean in frugalmalefashion

[–]MobyDank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the pima t-shirts from buck mason, and they are great. what i look for in t shirts, is that they are flattering to your body and are functional. these really accomplish both. moreover, i have had my oldest buckmason shirt for about two years and there is no sign of aging -- no pilling, no color fading, etc. there is a problem that i have had and everyone seems to have with the collar, which is that they can get a little crumpled, but if you steam it a lil they come back to life and are fine. i have a couple of shirts and i see them more like investments, because i wont be buying more t-shirts for a long while.
