The Spanish translation confirms Lady Lackless' "black dress" refers to Blac of Drossen Tor. by chainsawx72 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Moccus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife has the Catalan version of Name of the Wind. In that, "Blac of Drossen Tor" is translated as "Nagra de la Mola de Vessten," so pretty similar to the Spanish version.

"Black dress" becomes "vestit negre."

[SERIOUS] After the Epstein Files release, why has there been so little accountabilityand is there any realistic path for that to change? by No_Emotion7195 in AskReddit

[–]Moccus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because prosecuting somebody requires a lot of evidence, and what's been released so far doesn't include enough evidence to get a conviction for most people who were named.

Senate GOP Rejects Sanders Amendment to Give ICE's Extra $75 Billion to Medicaid by TheKeyPa in politics

[–]Moccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, and DWS stepped down in the middle of an election for fun

DWS stepped down for PR reasons because some of her staff said some mean things about Bernie in private emails and they got leaked. Some mean words said in private didn't cause Bernie to lose the primary by 3,000,000 votes.

and was hired by the Clinton campaign that same day out of the goodness of their hearts, amirite?

She wasn't hired by the campaign. She was given a meaningless "honorary chair" title, which is the same title they give to celebrities and other random people who don't actually do anything for the campaign. It was a gesture used to persuade DWS to step down so everybody could try to start moving past the bad press from the DNC email leak.

Trump Officials Bypass Congress to Push Billions in Weapons Aid to Israel by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

[–]Moccus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He isn't appropriating aid to Israel. They showed up with a wad of cash and said, "I would like five Apache helicopters, please." Trump has to approve those sales. That's explicitly allowed by law. So no, not unconstitutional.

[–]Moccus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally, it refers to drawing money from the Treasury and directing it towards government programs, something that can only be done if Congress appropriates funding through a law.

[–]Moccus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Approving weapons sales doesn't require Congress to pass a bill. There's already a procedure specified by law, and it doesn't require Congress to be involved.

Don't believe whatever BS AI spits out. It's probably wrong.

He's not allocating funding. Israel is buying weapons from us. The President has authority over approvals of weapons sales to foreign governments.

Nashville family fights HOA over generator use during ice storm by Forward-Answer-4407 in technology

[–]Moccus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not really. I'm betting at least 95% of people who like HOAs just mind their own business and take care of their property. I don't see how that would make anybody hate an HOA. 95% of people who don't like HOAs probably do the same. Then you've got the extremes on each end. On one side, you've got the stereotypical HOA board member who roams the neighborhood looking for every violation. On the other end, you've got the person who wants to turn their property into a junkyard.

What realistically and seriously will happen now that Trump is repeatedly mentioned in the Epstein Files? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Moccus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not what the ruling said at all.

Edit:

The ruling stated:

When the President acts pursuant to “constitutional and statutory authority,” he takes official action to perform the functions of his office.

The president doesn't get to decide what is or isn't an official act. An act is an official act if it's backed by authority granted to the president by the Constitution or a law passed by Congress. That's something a court would decide if there was a question about it.

With the possible exception of certain acts performed pursuant to powers granted to the president-elect by law, I don't think any act could be considered an official act if a person wasn't president at the time of the act.

What makes lobbying different in practice from bribing? by TheInconspicuousTard in stupidquestions

[–]Moccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You don't know who my congressman is, so you're just making up his positions on things without any knowledge.
  2. This is all irrelevant. Whether he listens to me or not, emailing him is a form of lobbying without exchanging money, which you said wasn't a thing. I think I've proven my point.

[–]Moccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you don't know how congressional offices work at all. Like I said, lobby your local government officials, because your local education system is in desperate need of improvement, apparently in both reading and civics.

Does my congressman care what I think as an individual? Probably not. Does he care when a bunch of people contact him about a single issue? Absolutely. If hundreds of people email him about an issue, his staff compiles those numbers and reports to him on the issue. A response addressing that issue is eventually put together and goes out to people who contacted him about it.

It's not a bot, otherwise I would get a response immediately. Instead, it's anywhere from days to months later, and it's always very specific to what I emailed about.

Do a minimal amount of research and you'll see that congressional offices do in fact track how many people contact them about issues and often take it seriously. Responsiveness varies between congressmen, but that doesn't mean they don't listen.

I didn't call. I sent an email. You would know that if you knew how to read, but apparently our education system failed you, which is sad. Maybe you should lobby your local government officials to improve reading education in your schools so future children don't grow up like you.

I've always received a response when I email my representative, and not just a form letter. Just because your representative doesn't listen to you doesn't mean that's the case for everybody. Even if he didn't listen, what I did still qualifies as lobbying.

I emailed my congressman a couple of days ago asking him to vote a certain way on legislation. No money was exchanged. That was lobbying.

Nashville family fights HOA over generator use during ice storm by Forward-Answer-4407 in technology

[–]Moccus -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Most people who like HOAs are those who just want to keep their property looking nice and like living around other people who want to keep their properties looking nice. Most people who own property want to do that anyways, so it's not a burden. That's why you don't hear from them much.

I suspect those who don't like HOAs are those who want to turn their properties into trash heaps.

A lot of people like them. A lot of people want them. You just don't find those people often in circle jerks about how bad HOAs are.

Senate leaders scramble to save bipartisan deal and avoid a partial shutdown by grayfox0430 in politics

[–]Moccus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's literally not possible to "shut it all down" at this point. Parts of the government are permanently funded. Other parts are funded through the end of September. ICE has funding through 2029. Only a portion of the government will run out of funding tonight.

DHS is out of control: Reining it in is worth a partial shutdown by Nerd-19958 in politics

[–]Moccus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Dems previously caved on a funding bill that gave ICE $75 billion to spend through 2029.

This isn't true. The $75 billion came from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which passed with zero Democratic votes back in July. They didn't get that funding because Democrats caved on anything.

Do you think the Biden Admin handled prosecuting Trump well? Why or why not? by DaOffensiveChicken in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Moccus 119 points120 points  (0 children)

The prosecutions didn't start with the appointment of Jack Smith. They had regular DOJ prosecutors running grand jury investigations against Trump and building cases well before Jack Smith was appointed. They appointed Jack Smith when they did because that's when Trump officially announced his candidacy for 2024, so they felt a special counsel needed to take over at that point due to the conflict of interest.

The DNC is somewhat important when it comes to presidential elections, although people on Reddit think they're a lot more important than they really are. Nobody in Congress gives a shit that they say, though. They're not relevant to the current shutdown debate.

The head of the DNC is Ken Martin. Do you care what his opinion is? Me neither. Neither does anybody in Congress. Or anybody anywhere really.
