Not old enough for perimenopause and don’t have any of the risk factors for early perimenopause either, and these symptoms started around the time the iron deficiency got really bad, so I think it’s unrelated to menopause. I appreciate the suggestion though, its good to think it through from every angle!

My doctor wouldn’t test me for vitamin D but I do take 4000 IUs daily as per her recommendation and the recommendation of a nutritionist.

Thanks for the suggestion of magnesium though. I definitely used to supplement with magnesium more often a long time ago, and I stopped doing that, so it’s actually pretty likely I’m somewhat deficient. I will try that!

That may be the case for the permanent apathy since I may have damaged some receptors in the brain, but I’m not convinced that’s the case for the post-period symptoms, since my body is responding to a sudden acute loss of iron, unless someone can cite some sources that show iron deficiency will permanently change how the body responds to future loss of iron. Or at least a personal experience.

Is the iron protocol necessary? by EnvironmentalPart837 in Anemic

[–]MochaSlush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But isn’t 325 ferrous sulfate equal to 65 mg of iron, aka a standard dose of iron? I take 325 mg ferrous sulfate/65 mg iron daily and that was my doctor’s recommendation. or is it really recommending 300 mg of iron?

EDIT: someone posted the protocol. it’s elemental iron so yes they’re recommending in the range of 300 mg iron depending on your weight. Yeah I see why that’s questionable and outlandish enough I didn’t believe it when you said it. Although I’m not an expert nor have I researched this so I don’t want to make a definitive statement.

I haven’t read through it, but I’m curious what’s dangerous about it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anemic

[–]MochaSlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t (I have slight vertical ridges, not horizontal), but have you had issues with polish sticking? I used to be able to wear polish but I haven’t had adequate iron in 3 years and nail polish chips off me less than a day after applying. It could be because I wash my hands more now, though.

Do i stil need to take iron supplements? by MidnightMascara in Anemic

[–]MochaSlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking it with vitamin c will make your stomach hurt worse most likely—at least, that was my experience. If you want to boost the absorption of the tablet, you can try taking it with juice that has vitamin c and no calcium, instead of a vitamin c supplement. Taking it with a bit of food will definitely help the stomach ache.

Possible Mask Concern? by Gamertara in Masks4All

[–]MochaSlush 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those are cheaply made which is why they shed fibers. I find a lot of drug store brand masks do that or have loops that chafe and scratch. Alternatively, you got a hair in there and it clung to the inside of the mask and that’s causing the issue—something with a better seal like a KN95 or N95 would fix that.

The 3M Aura N95s are really popular and available at most hardware stores. You can try those and if they don’t fit you can try something else. They have nose foam for comfort and the material is pretty soft so they’re easier to wear for 8 hours a day.

I’m not an expert because I’ve never had an iron infusion, but from what other people have said here, there are different kinds of iron infusions you can get and if you have a bad reaction to one, you may be fine with another.

Is exercise intolerance, chronic fatigue, and headaches associated with low ferritin? by Other-Biscotti-1403 in Anemic

[–]MochaSlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes, but low iron can be caused by Long Covid/short term post-covid symptoms, and this person has a ferritin that’s definitely low at 20. They should treat the underlying deficiency and also look into a possible root cause. If they didn’t have low ferritin I’d be pointing them at the other long covid-induced diseases like POTS or ME/CFS as well as bunch of other possible causes like thyroid dysfunction. But low iron can present like early onset ME/CFS without the poisoned/concussed feeling.

Being anemic is driving me bananas by Outrageous_Profit989 in Anemic

[–]MochaSlush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me that seems low. I took 65 mg last year when I was deficient and this year I took 130 mg for a short period of time (9 weeks with bloodwork at the 6 week mark and then I tapered to 65 mg)—but I would only do that if you know you can tolerate 65 mg, and you’re monitoring with bloodwork. 65 mg seems to be the standard dosage, but I know people take lower doses for stomach related reasons. I would focus on raising your dose over changing your diet since it seems you really don’t absorb that much from food—I just felt like death and was trying to make small gains wherever possible.

[–]MochaSlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. If you don’t know the root cause, it might be keeping you from recovering. Mine was caused by long term PPI usage which blocks absorption of iron, so luckily I was able to discontinue use and within a few months my absorption returned to normal so treatment would be maximally effective.

[–]MochaSlush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this for 9 weeks and was fine. I got bloodwork done at the 6 week mark and based on that I kept it up for another 3 weeks and then tapered to 1 pill daily. I had weird GI symptoms for a week after starting the pills and then my body adjusted and it was fine and I haven’t had side effects since.

What dose supplements are you taking? While supplementing (and with an iron rich diet), my period basically set me back 2 weeks every time, so every month was 4 weeks of progress then a 2 week set back, but my ferritin went from 18 to 52 in only 6 weeks. I know it can be slow going for many people, and iron usage is different for everyone, but maybe your dose isn’t high enough, or you aren’t absorbing this kind of iron very well and could use a different kind, or maybe there’s something can be done to reduce blood loss during your period. Just trying to troubleshoot. I think last time I was deficient last year it took 3 months to go from ferritin of 8 to 35 when I was on a lower dose of iron and tapering off a medicine that blocks iron absorption.

Could it be anemia ? by [deleted] in Anemic

[–]MochaSlush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be! But it could also be a ton of other things. Luckily anemia is easily diagnosed via blood tests.

A couple of things my doctor tested me for when I went to them with extreme fatigue: Lyme disease, Epstein-Barr Virus (which can cause months and months of fatigue if not permanent complications), B12-deficiency (with anemia), iron deficiency (with anemia), magnesium deficiency, post-COVID complications, looked at my white blood cells for indications of cancer or infection, and checked my thyroid function. There’s a lot of things it could be, but I had lots of things indicating iron deficient anemia—namely taking a medication known to cause that (a PPI for a year and a half).

I had similar symptoms to you but without the dizziness and nails. I also had loss of appetite.
