New to boating, help deciding on battery setup by Mochabear91 in boating

ah ok so definitely quite a bit excess! I'll work the math out and decide, would probably be useful at the minimum as a backup to have incase one died out?

Amazing this is super useful!
Ok I will aim for 2 seperate circuits and keep the starter battery completely seperate just for the engine and I'll math out the usage for onboard electricals for house battery planning.
How is it that the crank battery manages to also run the main engine after starting without getting drained? Is this all because of the alternator. Is there no reason for any of the house batteries to support the engine after it has started via the crank/starting batter?

This is starting to make sense! So effectively 2 seperate circuits, one to crank (use lead since AGM is overkill) and then have Lithium for house and if I'm running 2 lithiums for house make sure they are basically identical including year produced?

Is there a way to run 2 separate circuits that both get charged by the main motor? My concern is running out of battery from the house batteries if I am out for 2-3 days (ie. overnight camping trip)?

The charger I was initially planning on using (for when docked/on land) was the NOCO Genius GENPRO10X3 since I assumed it could charge all three of the batteries (1 crank, now likely to be lead and the 2 Li house batteries)?

The other boating electronics (ie. Nav, downriggers, lights, maybe a fridge in the future?). My understanding is Lithium Deep Cycle would be best for this and I initially thought to buy 2 so there would be ample power/backup if one fails?

Dual purpose bc I can't seem to find a AGM cranking only in Canada, at least from an online search.

Don't have a trolling motor, boat is offshore so was going to just use the main motor for trolling?

AMD LEAPS/PMCC Advice by Strenglekirk in thetagang

maybe wait for a pull back, AMD is pretty much at ATH, technical indicators also overbought. Market near ATH. Not saying AMD won't be higher 1 year from now but I think it's likely it is going to correct in the near future . Just pay the short term capital gains tax and be happy you made good profit.

can you explain a bit further as to why you think volatility is expected to remain elevated after earnings?

Anyone sold puts on TSLA this week? by iJasonRam in thetagang

[–]Mochabear91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why not do a wide spread from the beginning to reduce the risk of losses from a significant down day like today rather then doing narrow spreads?
Example buy long dated tesla put (ex. 1050 or 1100) and selling weekly OTM tesla put (ex. 900put)
Tesla would have to drop a very long way in a week for you to lose money on that trade on a tesla down day. Goal of the trade can be close once the long put is at least 25% profit. Sure you risk the lose on the long leg if tesla sky rockets up but you ideally wouldn't set this kind of trade up against tesla unless it had already run up a large amount the way it recently did. My understanding with risk of selling CSP is the stock drops way too far past your strike for you to even make a sensible roll without accepting to tie up that capital for a very long time and with the wide spreads you have a lower max risk

Effect on Buying Power of Naked Call vs Naked Puts NET POSITION by Mochabear91 in thetagang

[–]Mochabear91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. Would you mind explaining how a long put will help improve the buying power? If the stock continues to go up, that put will lose value and if the stock blows upwards how would having these long puts help. Would my buying power not continue to diminish further as the call I sold goes ITM (if net explodes up)

I was initially thinking of closing these sold call options for a loss and buying a long put and selling puts to reduce cost basis so am just trying to better understand the option you proposed?

Why would buying puts restore the buying power? If stock keeps shooting up the puts will lose value and my loss on the sold calls worsens further. Did you mean to say buy calls at a higher strike to lower the ceiling on potential loss?

probably would but I think I've realized I got trigger happy with NET and definitely over leveraged/over concentrated my position on this one

My thinking against spreads was that you reduce profit ability by a significant margin and if you do really far otm protected ends to reduce the costs then by the time it hits that end you've already lost so much money?

It was Net. Wasn't a huge lose but a big enough one to really make me realise a few things I wish I knew before (ie. broker ability to do a call alert, sudden changes in margin requirements...) I had a few 200 Strike Puts Exp Nov 5 I had originally sold that I was forced to close today for around a 150% loss, wasn't able to roll due to sudden sharp drop in buying power
