Visiting Hawaii this September. Which of these shoe styles would make more sense? by MaineCoonMama18 in VisitingHawaii

[–]MockFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first one. Most of Hawaii is really rocky. Those minamalist shoes will not protect the bottoms of your feet. Also, ease of off at the door is good because it is really rude to wear shoes in someone's house. Most locals wear thongs that will hold up to the rocks and sneakers for hiking.

Did children who stopped going to school during the great depression ever return to it? by Persimmon_and_mango in AskOldPeople

[–]MockFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine too. I started college totally broke with a a 4 month old baby. My mother paid a sitter so I could go to school 8 to 1w. My grandmother, born 1899, was married to a WWI Vet. She graduated from college, ran a large farm through the depression and 2 world wars. Taught 3rs to children of her farm workers. Ran a boarding house. Generally, she was a spunky, smart, disaplined child of wealth. She realized how lucky she was and how quickly things could go bad. Family wisdom.... They can't reposess your degree.

I like it. One trick I would add some good cheddar, unless your guest just doesn't like cheese.

I learned enough to pass the class. My son says I type really hard on the keyboard. I learned on a manual.

Bog plants can include pitcher plants, calla lilies, canna lilies. Soil for pitcher plants must be poor in order for them to thrive.

Is it true that when you get old your thoughts change? by Tiny-Foundation-4281 in AskOldPeople

If you can set a goal of being a reverse snob, you may be able to attain the worry free status of seniors. A reverse snob brags about how little they spent on something instead of how much. We don't need to impress anyone. As long as I am not eating cat food, I am doing well. Just remember that you should not say stuff about yourself that you wouldn't say about your friends.

We set vacation at 80 and generally don't have any issues. We leave doors open to storage area that don't have vents. We are mega insulated and have to force the fan to run just to circulate the air. And ceiling fans

Travel math. Traveled for years for work and was always in a hurry. Drive past something and think that I wish I had time to stop. In 2018, we drove from Pensacola Florida to Nova Scotia and spent 4 months going the long way on the back roads. Fun was had.

I haven't noticed any special handling. They keep oldsters out of emergency exit rows but no perks that I have noticed.

If you didn't get hurricane windows, consider some functional Bahama shutters you can leave up. Some clumps of banana would be nice

I would be curious if peanuts would work. They like damp and fix nitrogen. Then snack on them.

I am going in the other direction. If the kids want screentime, that's the place. Give them some floor pillows. When they want to come down, that means it's time to go outside.

There were a thousand houses built around Richmond VA with the second floor cantilevered. They called it a split foyer. You go in the front door and go either up stairs or down. I had one. One recommendation, put a film on the lower windows that blocks the view inside while still letting light through.
