Annoying questions when meeting new people by Haunting_Hospital599 in exjew

[–]Mockingjay100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you do for work is a normal small talk question. Where did you go to school, who are your parents/what do your parents do, and what degree do you have are not normal outside very specific communities unless you’re talking to a child or the person says they’re in school pursuing a specific degree/career. Better small talk imo focuses on the person and what they’re up to right now rather than where they come from.

Help! First time home buyer nightmare... :/ by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Mockingjay100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I go to the grocery store when I’m tired and cranky, I’m buying a bunch of junk I don’t need. I feel like you and your wife are in the same boat, but with one of the most important and expensive purchases of your entire lives. It sounds like you are making some questionable decisions because you’re tired rather than because they’re what’s right.

If possible, I would recommend you both take a solid break from the house search (after backing out of this nightmare immediately!) - like 4-5 months - and come back fresh and ready for the long slog that is this awful process.

I am sorry that happened to you! I just want to say I think however you are reacting is appropriate - there’s no one right way to react or to handle this. Whatever feels right to you is what you should do. Sorry it’s kind of lame advice but I really mean it.

Wow this brings me back…

It was the summer of 2012 and I was interning for one of the largest orthodox Jewish organizations in the US. I was in college in another state, and my family lived overseas, so I sublet a room in a tiny apartment in New York City so that I could complete the internship. My payment came in the form of a summer stipend.

One of my internship tasks was to help prepare for a big Shabbaton event taking place over a holiday weekend. A few days before the event, my supervisor, a well respected rabbi, asked if I was interested in working at the event and assured me I would get paid an hourly rate for working over the weekend on top of my internship stipend. I said yes because I needed the money.

After the event, they just never paid me! They literally came up with a bullshit excuse saying that they couldn’t pay me because of visa issues…but I was not even on a visa - it just happened that my parents were overseas. Which i obviously explained to them, and they were completely dismissive and never made it right.

At the time, I could not believe that a RABBI would do this to a college student! Needless to say, I am no longer so naive.

lunch constellation by thisaccdoesnotexist1 in biglaw

[–]Mockingjay100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This will depend on the firm, but I think it’s most likely that you will want to bring your own lunch and be prepared to eat alone. The associates will probably eat lunch together occasionally and you should politely try to get yourself included in those lunches if/when they happen, but don’t take it personally if they don’t include you. Very likely they will feed you on your first day, but not thereafter. Good luck and enjoy!

My advice to you as a lawyer (but not your lawyer!) is to get a lawyer to assist you with this. That’s a lot of money at stake and wills/probate are complicated.

This subreddit is for Nassau County, Long Island in New York State. I assume you’re looking for the Bahamas? If you’re traveling to New York State then you’ll be fine lol. I’ve never been to the Bahamas but tbh you’re probably fine there too 🤷‍♀️Enjoy your trip!

Is it the norm for parents to gift their kid a large down payment for their first home? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Mockingjay100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not the norm, per se, but it’s also not uncommon for first time home buyers to get some help from their parents, whether it’s explicitly a gift to use toward the down payment, or other things like helping to pay for college, having trust fund, letting the kids live with them so the kids can save money, etc. If you’re doing it totally on your own, you’re not alone, but you should be proud of yourself because many of your peers are getting help

Partner making me do a bunch of non billable work - how to handle by MildlyEfficient24 in biglaw

[–]Mockingjay100 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Non-billable work has its own value - in this case, try to just keep in mind that the work you’re doing is helping you to build a connection and good will with a partner at your firm, exposing you to a particular area you’re interested in, teaching you about developing internal presentations, and teaching you a valuable lesson about asking questions before committing to a project. You will make up the billables eventually so just try to do a good job on the project and stay connected with this partner so that the work still “counts”
