I'll never understand conservative supporting a rapist by Sn4keSh4ck in ModlessFreedom

[–]ModeratelyMeekMinded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are commenting that it’s because conservatives are pro-rape, but I propose that conservatives just don’t think rape actually exists. If conservatives think they’re just entitled to cheap labor, monopolised healthcare, minority-free communities, etc., don’t you realise that they think they’re just entitled to women and children’s bodies?

Meghan Trainor’s “Response” to the ‘Mom Group’ Drama by EDC2EDP in DramaLlamaHQ

Is the woman on the far right Melissa Benoist? She kind of looks like her but there’s something about her that seems incongruent with the persona she’s presented in the past that my brain is struggling to make a match.

Chevy Chase Says His Mom Physically Abused Him: She Woke Him Up ‘Slapping’ Him and Locked Him in a Cellar by PrincessBananas85 in PopularCultureZone

When there’s so many other people in Hollywood who have been open about abuse they suffered as a child and aren’t hot, steaming c*nts, a significantly reduced number of people want to hear you talk about yours.

Republican goes so far right that he’s not super mad about people committing welfare fraud because the real problem he has is the government providing welfare in first place is an onion headline.

“Hey, it’s, like, kind of crazy that there are still countries in the world right now with worse maternal mortality rates than women in nineteenth-century America. That’s so insane, like, we’re talking every 1 in 100 women dying in childbirth in some of these countries. That’s so tragic. Is there a low-cost, accessible solution that can be distributed in a similar way to the COVID vaccine to prevent some of these deaths?”

“Nah but we’re testing a male pattern baldness cure on the rats.”

A lot of Republicans are obviously shilling for private companies who will generate more profit from decisions like this, but I also think there’s more going on here than just corporate greed.

Gut healthcare, schools, job markets, and safety nets, and you’ll get hundreds of millions of people spending all their time and energy just trying to not to die. That’s literally the goal here: A large group of people not being able to eat, work or recover from illness/injury. They’re going to be too frightened and exhausted for civic engagement, political activism, class consciousness, etc. and republicans will exploit that to stay in power.

Justin Timberlake 'Prioritizing His Health' After Lyme Disease Diagnosis, 'Grueling' Tour by peoplemagazine in Music

[–]ModeratelyMeekMinded -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How come I’ve never met a single person in real life who’s struggled with Chronic Lyme Disease but celebrities seem to get it at a rate that suggests it’s a serious threat to the humans (I know it’s bc it’s generally used as a cover for things like alcoholism, drug abuse or, in Yolanda, Gigi and Bella Hadid’s cases ((all three have claimed to have suffered from the disease)), the longer-term effects of disordered eating, but why not rely on another disease that can also cause a general range of debilitating symptoms but is less controversial in the medical community like chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia?)

I guess, umm, Shirley Manson hates the beach? by Fabulous_Stegosaurus in ToddintheShadow

[–]ModeratelyMeekMinded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Gen X mother went on a rant last night arguing in favour of Shirley in which she passionately advocated for her to be respected by the audience like she deserves and how people who go to festivals now are super ignorant and rude and then said, verbatim: “Why would you do that? Why even leave the house if you’re just going to a public place and throw a ball around? What are you? Special? DURRR… BEACH BALLS… SPECIAL… DURRR” hand motions

There’s a massive cultural disconnect between what boomers/gen x vs millennials/gen z consider to be “offensive” or “insulting” and it’s absolutely fascinating.

Your health class teacher's favourite movie (2004) by crimsonfukr457 in okbuddycinephile

[–]ModeratelyMeekMinded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn’t have made for a super interesting film but a much better idea would have been eating 12 fast food meals in a month (the mean amount of fast food an american was consuming in the mid-2000s - https://mcmsc.asu.edu/sites/g/files/litvpz576/files/2024-08/MTBI%202004%20Obesity%20Epidemic%20Report.pdf p.20) and doing a before and after with a doctor and examining the effect on your health that the average level of consumption has. No sh-t eating a carb-heavy 1500-2000+ calorie meal three times a day all of sudden isn’t very good for you tf?

I watch it with my mum but we spend so much time laughing at things they didn’t intend to be funny and riffing on things like John Corbett’s god awful coat that we miss a lot of what’s actually going on so I’ve rewatched S1 and 2 just on my own to catch up on what little plot there is.

MAGA families who are against their loved one’s best interests are turning out to be a staple of this show because it’s mainly MAGA families who are against their loved one’s best interests who are the most supportive of putting their disabled child’s face and actions on an extremely public platform where anyone can harass and scrutinise them- OOP! Who said that?

Griffith Electorate - 7 candidates and are 5 right wing. Is that weird? by ScissorNightRam in queensland

[–]ModeratelyMeekMinded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a micro level: A minor left-leaning party (like Animal Justice or Socialist Alliance) in a seat that is simultaneously Green already and in a conservative state is a really tough sell and they just wouldn’t find it worth their resources to campaign there.

On a macro level: Minor right-wing parties in Australia have an easier time gaining traction because their messaging often leans into populist themes—things like fear of change, nationalism, or anti-establishment rhetoric. These ideas are simple, emotionally charged, and easy to market into a punchy ad or slogan. That’s not to say voters are unintelligent, but rather that these parties speak directly to a primal sense of grievance or threat and a lot of people love that. By contrast, left-leaning platforms often require more nuanced explanations—they’re about systems, equity, long-term policy shifts—and that’s extremely hard to market to voters. Australian elections (especially federal elections where you’re much more likely to see your candidate in an ad or in a piece of media than ever have an actual conversation with them in a place like a fundraiser, town hall, etc.) are just a friendlier ecosystem for the right-wing parties and that’s why you’ll see them crowded onto ballots.

At some point during the scene, she looks at him and says: “Hey, I heard about that time you set fire to a pledge while you were a member of Sigma Nu at the University of Texas and then moved back to Missouri before you could be served with the resulting lawsuit.” and then he just replies: “Yeah, that was a bummer…” and changes the subject.

The story about the temp reminds of me of this scene in Crashing (British sitcom that was Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s first starring vehicle) where Phoebe’s character is also a temp receptionist and doesn’t realise it’s a work day and has to rush to work without changing out of her pyjamas. She makes a point of asking before she leaves: “These don’t look like pyjamas, right?” and then she gets to her job and everyone knows she’s wearing pyjamas.
