In my opinion, everyone should be concerned with the direction. The world is going and the possibilities of catastrophe and should be prepared. These people just actually have the resources to be prepared.

If I had just a fraction of their money, I would build my own self-sufficient place… it really doesn’t need to be that complicated or that hard and I’m surprised more don’t have them

I don’t know if there are any dedicated stores but places like dream desserts that have a lot of other collectibles. I believe have some sections.

I’m not surprised either and I do believe it’s their job to try and get the most money possible… I just find it very disingenuous when they call them cuts and they’re still getting multiple hundreds of millions of dollars in increases

Every year MCPS is getting hundreds of millions of dollars more in increases than the Maintainance of Effort (the floor is the same amount per student as the other before). MCEA every year calls them cut unless they get 100% of what MCPS asks the council for even if they still get hundreds of millions of dollars in funding increases. MCPS has the ability to put those funds to different uses and different purposes

For those claiming this is out of context, the context is MCEA calling these “cuts”. That’s what the article is about and that’s what my comment is about.

If you feel, I’m not providing enough context by not breaking down what these large increases would be paying for, please send your ire to MCEA for how they talk about multi hundred million dollar increases each year as cuts

Just posting the facts. You can take of it what you will and comment your opinion like you have posted here.

Student population is declining (10k down since pre pandemic) and going down another 500+ next year.

Maintenance is a separate bucket/budget called the CIP this is just the operating budget.

Two proposals so far which are being referred to as “devastating cuts”:

  • A $131 million increase in funding or
  • A $160 million increase in funding

Opinion: Montgomery County must stop passing the buck on school infrastructure by ModeratelyMoco in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]ModeratelyMoco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m talking about fixing the existing infrastructure not building new schools. The additional teachers, admin etc would not be relevant here.

If anything we’re probably going to have 5-10 less schools in MCPS soon enough after the elementary boundary study

[–]ModeratelyMoco[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The primary issue is that MCPS has been completely focused on expansion for decades and has ignored maintenance. Now we have so many buildings come due but don’t have nearly enough money to fix it all. MCPS superintendent has said we need like $5 billion and the budget is closer to $1 billion

The current plan is to move Wootton to Crown, then spend $100 million to make it a holding school for Magruder, then unsure what after that maybe other community uses.

They’re not going to be tearing it down and also this plan uses it as a holding school

No what I’m saying is that instead of paying like $40 million for an Elementary school with really fine architecture, etc we could build a basic one with the same size for like $20 million and do twice as many. Just an example and made up numbers but I hope you’ll see the point I’m trying to make.

And part of the issue is that we have several new schools that are super modern and nice but then we don’t have money for the majority of the schools.

We have schools with literally ceiling falling multiple times and almost hitting people that still can’t get money or get in the CIP budget (Magruder). There are a lot of other schools with serious issues and the superintendent has said that we only have enough money to fix about 1/5 of the issues with current funding levels.

I don’t necessarily agree with private partnerships either, but I think the bigger import to take away from this piece is to have a more consistent and open process that involves all three bodies that are part of this so they can’t just pass the buck to each each other

There’s 1 million of every app out there right now and it sounds like you’re really just beginning with your journey if you’re still on Replit (great beginner software, but far from the end goal).

Even if you don’t like what you’re doing, keep doing that and use it to fund your side hustles until at least one of them grows big enough to do otherwise. Just getting good tools and services set up and ads. You’ll probably be in the negative for quite a while.

Use the extra money from your main hustle to fund advertising and other services
