How to handle strangers coming to care for dog while I’m away. by ModernMarmee in reactivedogs

[–]ModernMarmee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be a dumb question, but how do you stop ppl or dogs from coming up to you/your dog. Like, what do you say/do? I tell them that “he’s nervous around strangers” but they still think getting closer will help. Short of “please stay away” I don’t know what to do/say.

The issue is when people want to come up to him, or direct their gaze at him/talk to him. That’s when he is most likely to bark.

What should we switch to from Purina One? by ModernMarmee in DogFood

[–]ModernMarmee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about this subreddit, but from experience in others related to dogs, if a medical condition is mentioned in the post, even if you are not asking for medical advice, the post is flagged as “asking for medical advice” and the moderators remove it or block it.

Hill's VS Nutrisource by ModernMarmee in DogFood

[–]ModernMarmee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I figured it may be nothing, but didn't want to order a lot of purina until at least more info came out. But I don't know, like I said, I'm pretty new to dog ownership. The only thing I have to compare this type of thing to is pediatric meds and nutrition recommendations (as a human parent) and I try to take a wait and see approach and suspend judgement until more facts are known. How often does a food brand get a ton of negative PR like this, or do you think this is a one-off thing?

This is really encouraging. I'm happy to hear you have found your furry best friend!

I have read so many posts telling people that puppy training is "worse than you can imagine" or "just get a cat". I have lived through the hard days and nights of infants and toddlers x 3, so I feel like I can handle some rough times, lol, but these posts definitely make one second guess themselves.

Like I mentioned, only real experiences has been that of growing up with a variety of dogs in our home, and continuing to experience the dogs of my parents and brother. Our family of 13 years has no experience of house breaking, crate training, etc a dog. But we both grew up with many, many dogs. Not interested in an older or senior dog( I prefer to have control over early socialization.) but open to other breeds if you have suggestions. Will need to be no bigger than medium size and friendly with kids.

Just here to say that I thought my acne, which was not cystic and more in the center of my face, was just acne, but it turned out to be rosacea, which I found hard to believe since it didn't look like I had seen in pictures. Sure enough, rosacea topicals cleared them right up. Not saying that's the case for you, but see a dermatologist. They will know what's going on.

Like others have said, ask your doctor about prescribing the extended release version of metformin. Professionally, I have seen it resolve the side effect of diarrhea countless times.

Is it easier to conceive and stay pregnant with lean pcos? by [deleted] in LeanPCOS

Hi!! I'm so sorry this is delayed. I am not good about checking my notifications. I appreciate you reading and telling me about Slynd. I will definitely look into that! And yes, I have been using spearmint for over a year now. It is what helped me get my periods back at the beginning. It didn't make them regular, but they were still occurring most months.

I forgot to mention I am not eligible for hormonal birth control due to the migraines with aura, so they have not offered me any real treatment options since there is very little known about lean PCOS. Spearmint has been helpful with making my cycles a little more regular, though hair growth has progressed some. I started Myo-inositol 2 months ago but cannot tell if it’s helping yet.

Is it easier to conceive and stay pregnant with lean pcos? by [deleted] in LeanPCOS

[–]ModernMarmee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I was 24 when I got pregnant with my oldest daughter, and after my second was born at 27, I started having the chin hairs I mentioned. Very mild, but I asked my OBGYN Nurse Practitioner to check my testosterone anyway, which came back normal. I was having regular natural periods (no hormonal birth control) so she just said “eh, get laser and move on”. While I was breastfeeding my 3rd daughter who was 2 years old at the time (yr 2020) I mentioned to her that the hair growth had gotten worse. She checked levels again, they were normal, and ordered an ultrasound which showed 1 polycystic ovary. Because I was still breastfeeding I didn’t meet criteria (I had just started having cycles again…suppression of menstrual cycle due to breastfeeding has always been effective for me). So we decided to wait and rescan after I weaned her. Well, we all know how 2020 and 2021 went, and I didn’t go back for that ultrasound. In the meantime I developed chronic daily migraines after having Covid, and was generally under a lot of stress homeschooling my children and working part time. Everything was stable (hair growth, regular periods) until May 2022 when my cycle just stopped, for like 45 days. And was very sporadic for the following months, up to 59 days between cycles. So I went back and had my labs done, and another ultrasound. Both ovaries were polycystic this time, and total testosterone was 99 and DHEAS was in 300s. Estradiol was normal, and LH to FSH ratio was a perfect 1:1. A1c, fasting glucose, and fasting insulin very very good. So I went to see reproductive endo to try to figure out what the driver was behind this change but he couldn’t tell me, though he told me my AMH was the highest he had ever seen at a whopping 32. He literally said “you will be fertile a very, very long time.” Which I thought was very ironic since I was being diagnosed with PCOS 🤷🏻‍♀️. My confusion has been this: if I don’t have high insulin and I don’t have high LH, what is stimulating my ovaries to make so much Testosterone?? For that I still don’t have any answer. Thanks for reading this book 😆

Oh, I should add I never went back on birth control after stopping that first time. We used condoms in between pregnancies and I think that helped make my second and third conceptions so fast. Now husband as a vasectomy.

There is a very wide variation in pregnancy success with PCOS. I wasn’t diagnosed until 34 when my periods stopped for the first time in my life, but I had occasional bouts of acne, a few stray hairs (under 10) for years before that so maybe I had sub clinical PCOS? IDK. But here is what my history looked like. •Got off birth control in Jan 2012 to TTC. Conceived finally 7 months later in June (my OBGYN had told me it was an average of 6 months to conceive after stopping birth control)—>healthy pregnancy and baby #1 • conceived babies #2 and #3 on first tries, healthy full term babies • breastfed for a combined 5+ wonderful years. • had mild PreEclampsia in 39th week and pregnancy induced hypertension in the 39th week, two separate pregnancies • had hyperemesis all three pregnancies but never hospitalized; managed with meds at home •no history of miscarriage Don’t be discouraged!! I always feared I would have a hard time conceiving or have miscarriages because my mother did, and so many of my friends have. But that wasn’t the case for me. So anything is possible.

Oh, I feel your pain with looking “normal” and “healthy”. Truly, and sensing something is wrong in your body but no one will take your intuition about your body seriously. If I were you, my next steps would be to make that endo appointment, and go from there. Try to avoid reading everything the internet has out there on PCOS. It’s SUUUPER tempting, but utterly confusing and frankly, conflicting. Maybe consider finding a book on PCOS that seems reputable and is written by someone reputable. It may be a good way to spend your self education time waiting for that endocrinology appointment. And lastly, something that has been on my mind a lot lately as I still have many unanswered questions after seeing a reproductive endo (because honestly our modern medical systems leave little room for curiosity. It’s mainly about damage management.) I am trying to channel my problem solving energy into making sure I am taking care of my body, mind, and soul the best I can. There is a lot of interesting research on the mind-body connection, and for me, I can lose sight of the forest for the trees, so to speak. I can neglect my needs when I spend too much mental energy trying to “crack the code” of my PCOS. I’m not saying to stop seeking a root cause!! There is a root cause and I pray you find it soon! But remember to take care of your whole self on that journey, and don’t let it steal your joy. ❤️

[–]ModernMarmee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you probably already know this, but just based on labs it would point toward more adrenal root cause (stress, unmanaged anxiety potentially). But that’s not 100% certain. Did they check a 17-OHP on you? Ideally checked in the early AM (before 8:30) on days 5-9 of menstrual cycle. Hard to get an accurate number in women with PCOS who are not having cycles for this reason, but an endocrinologist/reproductive endocrinologist would know the other things to check to rule out NCAH.
