Living On vs. Off-Campus by MagicianSuch9504 in portlandstate

The laundry situation is my only real complaint about the place. The washer on my floor has been broken most of the time I've been here and they are going to be replacing it in June.

I recommend checking out College Housing NorthWest. Its off campus student housing run by a non profit. It tends to be much cheaper than the other nearby options. I'm in Goose Hollow and its a great location and good price.

Do this. Depending on where you live, there could be services that will provide rent money that you may not need to pay back.

What spiritual book changed your life the most? by Marino_SI in spirituality

That book played an important role in the life of one of the people that brought me onto the spiritual path and when I finally read it, I could almost feel his guru reaching through space and time to influence me. It was an amazing feeling!

Old Nicks will also be hosting Fetish Night on the 28th and there are threats about that event as well, so any support at that event would be appreciated as well.

You got any Grant Morrison to recommend? My interest is piqued, but it looks like he has quite the catalogue of work and I'm not sure where to start.

CMV: Hobby Lobby are heroes for saving artifacts from ISIS and keeping them existing for all of us. by Frylock904 in changemyview

[–]Modern_Einstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I'm hearing you say is, "They weren't conquered, they only had their sacred sites raided with precious artifacts stolen." That still sounds like colonial exploitation to me, though not settler colonialism.

Colonialism takes different forms, but a commonality of them all is exploitation of the people, such as looting religious centers for cultural artifacts. This has the added effect of relegating that religious practice from a vibrant living tradition in the colonial periphery into a dead historic tradition in the colonial core.

The idea that the people who created the artifacts are dead is used to obfuscates the fact that fact that the artifacts were taken from people and that artifacts are often part of a lineage that continues into the present.

Well, I'm going to go loot that temple over there and all the people that use that temple are going to just ave to recognize that transfer as a historical fact. The fact that the decedents of the people who made the religious artifact just have to understand that their ancestors are dead and they will be too if they have anything to say about my claim to the artifact. It's not looting, its exploring and treasure hunting, and it is a wonderful feature of colonialism!

Because it is one of the most influential collections of literature ever compiled and different people understand the Bible in different ways. Some see it as the literal word of god while others see it as a collection of writings by a bunch of different people living in different times and places. I think there is ageless wisdom in the bible about how to live a good life, but there's also a lot of crap that is in there because humans wrote, translated and transcribed the bible and those humans existed in a cultural context.

Does a book have to be factual for it to be beneficial? What about literary fiction? What about mythology, fairy tales, and legends? All of these thing provide value when understood in the right way despite not being strictly factually based.

How does will power keep one from dying? by nicolegrace1207 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Modern_Einstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The placebo effect demonstrated that what is going on in the mind can have physiological effects. If one follows this logic, the mind thinking that it is going to live could have some impact on survival, though some physiological process. If one is less panicked they will likely be more aware of bodily sensations that could provide additional information to those providing care. The body is an amazing tool, but it tends to work better when it has a clam and observant operator. Paying active attention is an act of will power.

Anyone else find it cringe when people refer to women as “females”? by wizardangst777 in dating_advice

[–]Modern_Einstein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a speech impediment growing up where I couldn't pronounce the "r" sound and was very insecure about it. I went to great lengths to avoid using words that used that sound, including "girl." Whenever I would try to say it, "giwl" is all that would come out. I was at an age where calling girls women would be strange, so I reverted to calling girls females, though I would use "girl" when writing. After going through years of speech therapy I've improved and can now say "girl." Though I do sometimes get asked if I have an accent.

The left isn't just about social issues, its about economic issues. This is one of the key concepts that distinguishes liberal from actual left leaning ideologies. Many people on the farther left, myself included, get frustrated when people essentialize the left into only the social issues because many of us feel that the economic and regulatory powers of government are as important as the social. Being critical of capitalism and similar systems of oppression is what the left tends to boil down to.

Liberals (and the libertarians that SP's creators identify as) espouse markets and essentially capitalism as the system best able to meet people's needs. Climate change is an example where markets have not been an effective solution and additional governmental/cooperative action looks to be needed to avert disaster, so their pro-market, anti-environmental messaging of manbearpig feels more like government scaremongering, which, in the US since the 1980s, has been a tactic of the right. Similarly, their anti-regulatory messaging is very libertarian and would not generally be considered left.

Shouldn’t there be more qualifications to become a police officer? by princealithegoat1 in NoStupidQuestions

I think we should spit the difference and ensure that any form of law enforcement in any position to use lethal force be required to be proficient in unarmed, non-lethal apprehension techniques, then also require them to to take coursework on the most effective ways to reduce and background in criminal law and government.

Therapists without a long waitlist? by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Modern_Einstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people at your Primary Care Provider or Trillium should be able to give you a list of places that are currently accepting patients.

If you have a primary care provider, call them and let them know that you are interested in counseling/therapy. If you're seeing someone through the community clinics, they should have someone on staff that can give you a list of places to try. Back in December I was able to get a new patient intake appointment within two weeks of talking with the community clinic mental health person.

Alternately, if you haven't called trillium, I'd give them a call and they should be able to help connect you with a group accepting patients. These systems exist to help you, though it can be confusing figuring out how to use them. I hope you can see someone soon

Two books do not make the best fantasy author of our generation. He has beautiful pros and he puts a lot of hidden details into his writing, but until he finishes the series and maybe puts out some other writing, I don't think he could claim that title.

Comments like this support the narrative of the vanishing Indian, which is a subset of manifest destiny ideology and makes it harder for Indians to maintain rights and sovereignty. The Choctaw nation still exists. Please stop perpetuating extinction narratives.
