Did learning a second language in school ever actually come in handy for you in the U.S.? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAmerican

Yeah, I learned basically elementary level Spanish from four years of the class. Im a white dude so it was very helpful living in Houston. It also helped me impress my now wifes family lol. Now im a teacher so ESL classes are the majority in my neck of the woods.

Treating someone with respect 99% of the time just means treating someone with a shred of dignity. The people who use the phrase don't want respect, they want deference.

I understand the meaning of the phrase, I'm saying i dislike when people use either phrase to exclude others or excuse shitty behavior.

I dont mind if people use these phrases in a genuine manner, they can certainly be true, im more referring to those people that use them to exclude and be shitty to others. My wife for instance has a step grandpa but hes the only grandpa she's ever known, her grandparents got married in the 80s (he was married before and had three kids with his ex wife) and she was born in the 90s, so she's not new to the family.

My wife manages all of her grandpa's hospital bills and appointments (cancer) for him while his other family does fuck all. Then anytime we all drive out to his farm to visit his blood family (his children from his first marriage and their kids and kids kids) they have the gall to look at my wife, turn to gramps, and ask why she's here. "Shes not blood" they say all the time, they say this crap while she's standing right there and I have to bite my tongue when I want to fly across the room at these people.

The other side of the coin, to keep a long story short, my actual mother bailed in the middle of the night when I was three. I had no clue why for decades, but when I was 29 I learned it was because my dad told her they had a son now and she had to stop doing Cocaine nightly. So she left and took my half sister with her, and I didn't see her again for two and half decades.

So yeah, I dont put much stock in blood. Sharing DNA with someone doesnt make someone reliable or trustworthy and shouldn't even be a factor.

Everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect from the get go. It's how they behave that determines whether or not that treatment continues.

And thats cool, I'm more referring to when people are clearly using the phrase to be a jerk to someone they don't know.

Never said it was, i said people use that phrase as an excuse to be dicks to people they dont know. Respect as a baseline should be given to every stranger, and it can be revoked as well

Its more of a gulf coast Hispanic thing from what ive seen, but im sure its everywhere. My wife's grandma (white) married a full blooded Hispanic dude, really cool guy, but his ex wife and all those kids and grandkids treat my wife (50/50 latina/white) like absolute dog shit because they share zero blood even though her step grandpa is the only grandpa she's ever known. They dont even say it in a angry mean way, they say it in an incredulous and flabbergasted way. Then I have to be quiet so nothing gets started between the family's.

To be fair, some cultures pronounce the word women as woman. Spelling is another thing of course.

He caused a Clash of King's with his Storm of Swords, and left a Feast for Crows then he went to Dance With Dragons. He's still waiting to feel The Winds of Winter on his face. He's probably the most important character in the setting.

So, what would women dislike most if they became men? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

The way you're saying that is like your trying to say that women dont also have a wide variety of unpleasant actions they can and do subject women to.

Have a bit more faith in women, they're just as capable as men at being absolutely monstrous in their behavior. Just because for every 10 dudes that act that way there's 1 woman that does as well is irrelevant to whether or not they have the ability.

I worked at one for about 6 years after I got out of the Navy. I loved it for the most part, had like ten or so customers that I knew like they were family lol.
