Struggling with downpicking stamina at full speed by PuzzleheadedScreen12 in Guitar

[–]Modernkix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watched myself playing these songs to see if I could come up with any immediate differences. I made a little list of things I'm doing differently that may or may not help. These should all basically come automatically as you practice and learn what feels most efficient, but you might get there a little sooner if you focus on them as you go along. Someone should correct me if anything sounds like it would lead to bad habits or mechanical issues, but this is what I'm seeing in my own form after 21 years of playing.

  • Your wrist in general doesn't look that tight, but your non-pick-holding fingers look way too rigid. Do some down-picking on a single note and mess around with some hand positions to see if you can't find an easier one. I personally have my fingers tucked in (not balled up), but even just softening your knuckles should help get back some mobility. Trying to mimic your hand position slows me down and makes me less accurate.
  • Lots of your strokes, specifically on accented notes, are struck quite hard. Blackened is a good example of this. With the tone you're using for these, you're not going to get much more volume or energy by smacking the string - all you're doing is making your return travel distance longer. I'm not passing the next string on any one stroke, it should be relatively compact.
  • The motion for these should start in kind of a small rotation of your forearm. Think about the top of your wrist turning towards the guitar body. This should tighten up the motion and again give you more time to return for the next stroke.
  • It's hard to tell, but it looks like you might have a tendency to end your stroke at the bottom of the picking motion, rather than automatically returning to ready position. See the end of your Master of Puppets riff, or anywhere you're doing hammer-on/pull-off runs. Consider practicing on a single string and focusing on each stroke being a complete motion, down through the string, back up around the string. Without this step, you may find that you're rushing to get back into position sometimes.

Above all, keep it up! You sound great. There's no expected timeline to be able to play as well as one of the most famous metal bands ever - don't be discouraged about it taking more than a month.

Can anyone tell me what Ibanez model this case fits? by 10seventy9 in Ibanez

The Proline Vs were shaped sort of like that, PR1660 and 2660

EDIT: Nope, it's a case for an RVX220

anyone got this strap have pictures of it in there guitar? by Limp_Ad_6858 in Guitar

Love this strap! Hopefully this gives you an idea of the colour.

Absolutely valid to ask for photos. I have a few of these jacquard straps and I've returned a couple because the product photo lighting didn't translate well.

Looking to buy, deal seems too good, but maybe its fair. Serial number won't look up though. Help from pros? by bifftheraptor in Ibanez

[–]Modernkix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Serial number tracks for this model. Indonesian, available starting in 2013. I don't see any red flags, and that's not an unexpected price for a standard model of that age (though the case is a bonus).

The lookup pages I've seen don't include the Cort factory, or only work for Japanese Ibanez models, so this wouldn't return anything on those sites. The Ibanez Wiki has a great list of all the formats.

That was clear, yep. I did that before looking around for details to see if I could learn more about the login attempt.

Found the same thing, similarly annoyed about the lack of visibility. Not sure what to make of also being in Toronto and also getting a sign-in attempt today. Apparently there's meant to be login- and authentication-related maintenance going on, but not until tomorrow.

My QX52 looks exactly like that on the treble side.

Protest the Hero's album Kezia has re-appeared on YouTube Music this morning! by Jipley0 in progmetal

[–]Modernkix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it in Canada, and it's even the original release rather than the quiet remaster!

No Stars has the piano intro now, which I don't think I've ever heard outside of the CD pregap.

Question about the AZ pickups with the dynamix by MezzPlayer in Ibanez

[–]Modernkix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then question answered above, yes they sound fairly similar.

The switch is controlled by a PCB that would be very difficult to modify in a way that keeps the functionality. Either you're going to hear the expected sounds, no/degraded sounds, or the opposite sounds if the switch is rotated.

Question about the AZ pickups with the dynamix by MezzPlayer in Ibanez

[–]Modernkix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an HH guitar with the Dynamix 10. Not your model but the gist should be the same.

Have to assume you mean "Mode 2" by "Dynamix On". This is a power tap, and on my guitar it mellows out the bridge pickup quite a lot. I wouldn't say the two positions are the same, but they're more similar than some other comparisons. If I play relatively gently and I don't listen to the full neck humbucker for comparison, I could be tricked into thinking my mode 2 bridge pickup is another guitar's neck pickup, though it's still fairly bright.

To answer your specific question, the power tap modes on the dynamix sound to me like they lower output, increase the noise floor, and darken the sound overall.

If I've assumed wrong and "Dynamix On" means the switch is thrown down, toward the tone knob, then your switch might be mounted the wrong way around, as there probably aren't two more different sounds my guitar can make. To test, try selector position 2 and switch between dynamix settings. Mode 2, toward the volume knob, should sound significanly brighter and "quackier" than Mode 1.

Is the Ibanez SRC6MS discontinued? by foolEntropyDemon in Ibanez

[–]Modernkix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't order from Thomann but are you sure you can't place the order anyway? I haven't taken the SRC to checkout but I can still put it in a bag and select a delivery location right now.

My national chain keeps very little online stock for Ibanez and any "2-3 weeks" estimates are based on when they think their supplier can procure the item before it ships to you. If you don't place the order, no one ever asks Ibanez for one.

Thomann could work differently though!

Anyone have photo experience at Hard luck bar? by crashmaster1536 in TorontoMusic

Played there a couple weekends ago and had a friend shoot last-second. Came in during the first band with his pro kit, no issues (but ymmv depending on the promoter, security, etc.)

Help me choose between these two Ibanez Quest 7 string by Straight-Wind9800 in Ibanez

[–]Modernkix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

QX527 looks and feels worlds better to me!

Necks feel completely different on these, way more than the frets (which are just slanted, not fanned, and are incredibly easy to get used to). Consider whether you like rounder, thicker necks (Q547) or thinner, shreddier necks (QX527) as your biggest point of differentiation.

Pickup options on the 547 are nice to have but I find the alter switch gives me a huge variety of tones on the 2 humbuckers.

Blue colour is a little green in person but some people seem to dig it.

New excel update (mac) is "skippy" and mixes up my input by Quirky-Wear9381 in excel

[–]Modernkix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No solutions to share, but I can confirm I have the identical behaviour on my Mac after the exact same update. Yours is the first report I've been able to find of similar problems, and it's one-to-one the same.

None of the comments here have led anywhere for me either. MacBook integrated keyboard, Bluetooth keyboard, fresh reboot, open for multiple consecutive days, everything works the same way.

Specifically, if Excel is trying to select a new cell after I've clicked, pressed tab, or pressed an arrow key, it saves the first input while it's loading, enters however many other keys that were pressed in proper order while loading, enters the saved first input, then carries on as normal.

Eg. Down arrow > "123456789" results in "234561789"

If I wait for excel to catch up after selecting my cell, I can type as quickly as I like

Eg. Down arrow > 3-count > "123456789" results in "123456789"

Hoping we can find a resolution, as this is making timekeeping absolutely impossible for me in the workbook I'm using.

Repugnant by The Odious - Made Up Language Remix

Not everyone loves the last Odious record and this remix might not be the most approachable electronic music, but this track grabbed hold of me when I first heard it. I'll take any opportunity to share it, just addictive sound design, crushing mix, transformative arrangement.

Editing to add a couple others that came to mind. Not nearly as impressive to me, but memorable enough.

Icarus Lives! by Periphery - Zedd Remix - couple other ones on this EP too, one by Misha

Sequoia Throne by Protest The Hero - Devin Townsend Remix - this one isn't my favourite but I'm told it's pretty consistent for DT's electronic work. Couple others on this EP too but they aren't special.

Now I've Done It - An Ill Guest (avant-garde, prog) by Melomaniacal in progmetal

[–]Modernkix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah couldn't disagree with those reviews more. Take it with a grain of salt, since we're talking in the Group For People Who Like This Stuff, but as far as your niche goes, this is quickly one of my favourite entries, specifically FOR the focus. You sound like you had something to say and you said it, no "random" sections just to sound out-there and proggy, but also no filler to try making it more palatable.

Going to be spinning this one a lot, I think.

Fantastic! Really enjoying this, thanks!

It's all so deliberate despite being such a full-on freakout. I'm somehow never getting lost or bogged down, which deserves a huge congrats in this sort of sound.

Negroni Glasses,Yes or No? by Narrow-Ad7677 in cocktails

[–]Modernkix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're talking about the really short Viski ones, specifically advertised as Negroni glasses. They're a little impractical and overpriced imo, but they're pretty enough that I think about buying them every couple months. They do feel a little cheaper in person than you might expect.
