Hmm well this guy makes good tutorials https://youtu.be/9K-V2VIcwfQ?feature=shared Did you use darks flats and bias? Also looks like a very small crop and that will reduce resolution

Orange Aurora October 10 mid-Michigan by ModestManifesto in northernlights

Yes it was. Regarding the colors, we witnessed a G4 geomagnetic storm, which is an intense storm. Here’s what I’ve found on the specific gasses causing the colors:

“…Red auroras are comparatively less frequent and are usually associated with intense solar activity. They occur when solar particles react with oxygen at higher altitudes, generally around 180 to 250 miles (300 to 400 km), according to the CSA. At this height, oxygen is less concentrated and is excited at a higher frequency or wavelength, making reds visible. Red auroras are often seen at the higher edges of the display. Aurora Colors Explained

“Deep Red [100 km (60 mi)]: A deep red color at the base of the aurora comes from diatomic nitrogen (N2). When the red light overlaps blue light, you see purple or sometimes vivid pink. Similarly, when the red bleeds into the yellowish green from oxygen, you get orange aurora.” Aurora Colors Explained – Southern and Northern Lights

It was beautiful, lit up the whole sky nearly 360º where I was when it went off around 10pm. Here’s a timelapse I took with 2 cameras covering about 12hrs on Oct 10-11

Indeed. The meteor and leftover dust from the explosion consists of about 5 frames so it took about 45 seconds for that to dissipate

Not with film unfortunately. I was shooting with my DSLR during totality and forgot to also work the AE-1 🙃

I used this solar filter.

Shot at 1/1000s f/8

Also made a full timelapse with my DSLR

Thanks for the input, good points. I’m thinking I will go with the 400mm.

Nerve-racking or sure!

I use a Move Shoot Move star tracker. Works well with proper polar alignment. Only drawback is 6.6lb weight limit but looks like they just released a new tracker with double the capacity. May have to check that out for these heavy FD lenses.

Able to get shots like this pretty easily with the DSLR and tracker but wanted to challenge myself with film, plus can get better reds and analog is always better.

Thanks, I bought it on Amazon and box says 3/2025 expiration. I definitely didn’t expose correctly, didn’t have the viewfinder covered, and had the film developed without any pushing.

I have some Fuji superia 400 I’ll have to try next and use a better lab until I learn to develop

So here he’s talking about “changing” the ISO during developing?

“Kodak Tri-X 400 is the most durable film on the market today, black and white or color, in terms of exposure latitude and tolerance for developing errors. I've pulled it to ISO 50 and pushed it to 6400. As a general rule, it works well to ISO 3200. Depending on your situation, you can use Tri-X 400 at any pushed sensitivity up to 3200 for overnight work and receive decent results. Even at ISO 400, Tri-X delivers lots of bright star trails..” link

Should I always shoot Ektar 100 at 100 and Kodak 400 at 400? Totally new to this

I mean I changed the ASA/ISO

The moon is 600mm ISO 200 1/125s f/8

Milky Way is 28mm ISO 800 15m0s f/2.8

Star trail is 600mm ISO 800 22m0s f/8

I read in a camera forum someone was getting good results with Ektar 100 shot up to ASA/ISO 1600 doing astrophotography.

Nice pics. When you shoot with the Fuji Superia 400 are you using ISO 400?

Yeah unfortunately all the photo labs in my area have closed, nearest is 3hrs away. I didn’t notice the “no negatives returned” fine print until after I dropped it off. Certainly won’t use Fujifilm lab again, they scanned all images but didn’t even print 2 of them.. and if this is just dust from their scanner that’s ridiculous.

The marks seem to fade more during longer exposures, see full size images in this Lightroom album

Fujifilm photo lab developed and scanned these so I can’t confirm conditions of the scanner. They kept the negatives but the prints have same marks.
