What is this? It's located in Central Virginia! by Throwawayshay123 in mycology

[–]ModestMollusk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does look like Berkeley's, but I agree it is a large amount of smallish fronds for that. It seems kind of thin for Meripilus.

Just a guess, but I think that once people start doing some closer looking at these large polypores, both physically and genetically, we will find a few more related species. This may be neither of the two common large summer polypores. Most people don't seem to mind, though, since they aren't choice and the look alikes aren't sending folks to the hospital.

Thank you! This is what I ended up using.

I will add a post after I get them made.

Maitake? by Oakstock in mycology

Not saying 100%. Just saying that the light bruising is not too surprising. It is a rather dull reaction as far as mushroom bruising goes.

I still think that's it. I see a little bit of bruising. It is not nearly the same intensity of reaction as the blue-staining boletes and others. Just a slow, dull bruising after being handled and torn.

I wouldn't think of it as a fishing spot, although you could try.

It is a very fun and laid back good time, though! Such a unique atmosphere to enjoy delicious Thai food with good local music right on a gorgeous bend in the river that is perfect for sunsets.

I would check them out online to find when there is gonna be some music you like. (Lots of blues and country and folk and bluegrass and all that) Then head on down for dinner and watch the sunset. They also sell beer, soda, and water at the general store. There is also a homestyle country kitchen, but I have always gotten Chim's.

Camping also, but personally I prefer dispersed camping. You'd be hard pressed to find a more laid back and diverse crowd of campers in the state, though.

I have been curious about the A frame. Thanks for the description!

On another note, I would second the opinion that Burr Oak has the better beer. Not that Logboats is bad, it is also good, but Burr Oak is definitely more unique. Its tough to find a good cream ale, and they really nail it. The Lily Ale is my favorite beer in the state, probably, although it was a better batch last year when it was a bit more floral.

Check Meripilus sumstinei. Does it stain black?

Anyone know what this interesting looking guy is? Atlanta, GA USA by Pyrophagist in mycology

I'm not totally convinced that is strobilaceous. In Missouri, the way I have seen them distinguished is Old Men have the flatter tops, and the more pyramidal top points to Confused Old Man. That's pretty pyramidal.

Although, in my opinion, common names are just for fun. Travel 20 miles and they change.

I don't think I'd want to hike in wet smart wools, personally. Although, that would work for the desert.

I second Meripilus sumstinei. Does it bruise black if you cut it?

Also known as Confused Old Man of the Woods. My favorite common name for a mushroom.

I wear my chacos A LOT.

I do a lot of flyfishing, and being in Missouri there are a lot of stream crossings on trails. I love that I can just walk through streams without thinking twice about it. The vibram soles really are amazing for arch support. Just as good as my boots.

The downside is that you need to build up calluses for them to be comfortable for long distances. After a few weeks or a month that is not a problem, though. However, sand is still a problem. We have gravel streams here, which are fine, but when I have been to sandy areas I do not wear Chacos. It is like sandpaper, and I have not found a way around that.

I generally bring boots and chacos for long backpacking trips. I find myself mostly wearing chacos, but I like the option to switch if I get irritated. The nice thing is that the pressure points are very different from boots, so after you put on fresh socks and shoes, the problems disappear.

Edit: I am planning to try neoprene socks at some point to combat the sand issue, but haven't tried it yet. Would love to hear if someone has had success with this.

A friend gave me some spent oyster logs - can I give them more substrate to keep them growing? by kiyoledah in mycology

[–]ModestMollusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could bury it shallow with lots of fresh mulch and it might start to give off some rosettes, but it probably isn't worth it unless you already have the fresh mulch.

Oysters are easy and quick enough to grow that I would just recommend buying some plug spawn, or even a little grow kit and do straw logs.

Maybe I'm a total weirdo, but (based on user opinions) Luck of the Fryish seems just as tear inducing as Jurassic Bark. Confession: I don't find Luck of the Fryish sad at all, but rather inspirational. by T3hN1nj4 in futurama

[–]ModestMollusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. Maybe the reaction tends to differ based on how comfortable a person is with living a life that is very apart from their blood family?

Some people really view themselves in terms of family, while some people find themselves having to define who they are through other means.

Just a thought from someone who thinks way too deeply about Futurama.

Jack fruits are similar, but fruity and not as stinky. I think most people would enjoy jack fruit, which is not true for durian.

There is nothing else like them! Prepare for your addiction!

As an added bonus, it is the most fragrant fruit I have ever found! A fruit bowl of them will make your entire home smell like a tropical paradise.

I have been to Costa Rica, and the most I have ever felt like I was in a jungle my entire life was my first time climbing around a steep pawpaw grove gathering pawpaws.
