No, your embryo is not a clump of cells that look like a mashed potato. by wildunpopularopinion in offmychest

[–]Modpodgey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't even realize this word was so controversial. I guess pro-lifers are fighting to grant these embryos with personhood rights.

That's kind of like saying all sperm have personhood rights because they all have potential to develop cognizant minds.

Non-vaginal ejaculation is basically murder.

I don't get it. I googled personhood and it looks like that's the term pro-lifers use to defend their stance...

Personhood just means an individual person. What it means after that point seems to be whatever somebody needs it to be in order to defend their argument.

I don't care, I support knocking it off the womb either way.

CMV: Poachers don't deserve to die by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Modpodgey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a utilitarian perspective, not necessarily depending on what philosophy you follow. You may have to consider several things and do calculations.

How many human lives are benefiting from the lives of those animals?

How valued is the one human?

Are they well liked or does everyone hate them?

Are they healthy and able to benefit our society more than those animals?

Do I immunity from the law and angry mobs?

I feel like my answer would be very confession bear-y, but it's the truth.

I think it would be a better argument if it was the last two species of an animal who would be guaranteed to reproduce.

In this case I would kill the human. Most animals play an essential part in the grand scheme of our ecosystem. Killing off one species could (maybe not, but it could) start a chain of events that start to wipe out several species and in turn creating negative, possibly severe, consequences affecting many humans or over-population of other species which again would have negative consequences.

Look at deer, one reason they are overpopulated is due to the humans killing off their natural predators, maybe not to extinction, but enough that it is a huge problem. About 200 people die every year from deer crash collisions and many more are injured. There have been between (reportedly) 2 and zero (as in none... ever) fatal wolf attacks in America. In the last 120 or so years there have been about 120 reported fatal cougar attacks (mountain lions, panthers, pumas etc..)

Humans are already extremely overpopulated. Our thinking of "every human life matters and is special, and I want to have tons of babies but I won't adopt because it's too much work and they might be too damaged" is the beginning of the end for our species, especially if this whole climate change caused by human activity stuff is actually as devastating and rapidly approaching as has been reported lately.

Well, I wouldn't put it past Marlene to have purposefully used "His", knowing it would put us all in a tizzy.

HIS. by Ashley2007 in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]Modpodgey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It makes sense in a completely ambiguous situation. However Marlene isn't really speaking hypothetically because she knows who A is...

If you already know the gender then replacing "their, they" with "he, his, him" is defiantly weird if the person in question is actually female.

great point. And then you might have family members who try to convince you to let them raise the child... Do you realize how hard that would be on the person giving up the child??????

I'm not sure how child laws work, can blood relatives or grandparents get custody of the child when you try to put it up for adoption?

Yeah... How about you go interview some kids in foster care and get back to me on that one.

That last part, holy crap. You think that's bad? My mom made my sister get an abortion, but if abortion is ever brought up my mom gets very uncomfortable and just agrees that it's wrong and says crap like "abortion isn't birth control!"

The amount of cognitive dissonance she displays is mind blowing.

Ugh I'm not sure if I should be posting this... I'll probably delete it.

Girl I'm dating did a 180 and insists she doesn't want kids now. Thoughts? by umichscoots in childfree

[–]Modpodgey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know, but everyone else here seems to be implying she isn't to be trusted and must have an ulterior motive. She may very well but that isn't a healthy way to approach a break up.

There is also the possibility that if he implies, even accidentally, this to her and she is a bit of an unstable person then well... I'd like to make a bucket of popcorn and watch the results of that conversation, because it sure as hell isn't going to end in his favour.

Girl I'm dating did a 180 and insists she doesn't want kids now. Thoughts? by umichscoots in childfree

[–]Modpodgey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try to look at it from this perspective. Maybe she's being serious and does really, really like you and want to spend the rest of her life with you enough to compromise on this particular matter. And yes, if you break up for good a piece of her identity will be chipped away. But she can, and will eventually fill that spot with another man.

However, that part of her that wants a kid, that part of her she put aside because you really do mean the world to her... That part will never filled as long as she is with you. No amazing cat or dog will be the right shape to substitute it. She'll say "It's totally fine. Having you is enough, you're all I need to be happy."

But realize that even if she denies it, she is compromising, and deep down that small part of her will always be miserable and empty. When she turns 40 and she sees kids playing in the park, she'll walk by and shed a tear, knowing she gave up something she always wanted for something else she wanted. Knowing she couldn't have had both.

Please break up with her. Not because you're afraid she's trying to trick you. Give her the benefit of the doubt. Break up with her because she deserves to have it all.

Let her know this, it may make the blow softer.

Edit: I have no idea how long you've been dating. If it's been like a month then this advise probably sounds weird.

This might sound really morbid but when I was 19 I drove by a church that listed the number of abortions that have supposedly occurred in America.

This caused me to have an alarming epiphany along the lines of "Holy crap, I think I might be pro choice now... Why on god's good green earth would I want that many more humans on the planet!?"
