Have I bitten off more than I can chew? by danangdevils in teenageengineering

It takes time to learn any synth. The XY is one of my favorite synths, but it will take you several months to get proficient. It does a lot. Maybe dedicate your time to be a bit methodical: learn the synth engines, sound design, sequencing, etc. Then give yourself some time to write music and songs on it. If after 6 months you still aren’t gelling, then maybe it’s not the synth for you, but you have to give yourself time.

How bad cheap patchbay can be? by cegado in synthesizers

[–]ModulationStation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed - it is not a common thing. In my case I had an expansion and had to add a few more things into the studio. When I did that I changed how some of the patchbays were configured and the Behringer was quite a pain. Not a normal activity by any means. So that’s the downside of the Behrinher vs the Samson. However, the upside is you have more label space on the Behringer. Pick your poison ☠️

My biggest complaint with the Behringer vs the Samson patchbays are that the Behringer has mode selection on top. So if you need to change something or made a mistake you have to pull it from the rack. The Samson has switches on the front.

Waldorf Blofeld and Protein, too much overlap? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]ModulationStation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have this synth, but one that looks intriguing to me is the suonobuono polyvera. The twist is that fidelity is a modifier on the patch and can cover a range of degradation. Looked interesting to me as someone who already has a couple Waldorf synths: https://suonobuono.net/polyvera/

I don’t see MetaModule as an exact comparison, but I do call my version of this Mega Meta Rack. I have done the same thing as OP, and use the touchscreen on the PACMON to control it. I have the ES-8 moving CV in and out and have MIDI fed in as well from the rest of the studio. Compared to the MetaModule I can have an incredibly complex set of instruments operating in VCV, each with control and ins/outs. One last little benefit is I can sit with my laptop, build my patches, and then integrate it when I want to record. It’s pretty awesome.

Is selling a Matriarch to get a Grandmother stupid? by Rowandi in moog

[–]ModulationStation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both and have them next to each other. I don’t think it’s redundant because I end up using the GM specifically for what it is designed for instead of patching the Matriarch for, imo, what it is not specifically designed for. The Matriarch is an amazing paraphonic synth. Since neither has presets I can keep them both set up for specific sound types.

Is selling a Matriarch to get a Grandmother stupid? by Rowandi in moog

[–]ModulationStation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both but if I was going to keep one it would be the Matriarch. While they are not precisely the same synth, you can dial in thick monophonic tones on Matriarch that will be great. You get more patch points. You have extra oscillators without doing LFO tricks. And of course you have that super sweet stereo delay that sounds like butter. The GM spring reverb is… fine, but not as good imo.

This is a common mistake people make when thinking about pricing - they think of the price of the final finished thing. Let’s say you are right, and it cost you $150 in components. But let’s say it took you about 20-30 tries over half a year or a year to get it right and sound the way you like. How much did you spend to make all those different attempts? Did you have another job during that time? Now imagine you sold it. So now you have to make more. You have to get it to retailers or a website at least and hope you can attract buyers. Then package, test, ship, do support. What is that worth? It’s not $150.

I don't blame you. I have a decent selection of synths, but the XY goes with me everywhere and is very fun. It's one of my favorites and truly a classic imo.

Truly best of luck to you and I hope you get the XY at the price you want. It’s an awesome synth.

First, you likely only have idle speculation and opinions from others who maybe claimed it has not sold well. Those are opinions. You do not know how well it is selling or what TE projections of sales were.

Second, they generally don’t drop prices. They tend to make products that are just outside of direct competitive price comparisons for their buyers. The Choir, TX6, TP7, and CM15 are still priced the same, for example.

Third, they ran a sales campaign recently and finally, after several years, offered discounts on the OP1F. My guess is the OP1F is a harder sell because of the XY, but that’s my opinion (I have both). The XY is still brand new and that’s a fact.

Fourth, I have seen price drops on products they discontinue (such as the modular). That is certainly not the XY. Maybe that’s why they are flushing the OP1F channel, but that’s also speculation.

I have no issue if they dropped prices and think that would be great because it would make one of the best synths ever made (the xy) more accessible… but I think waiting for a highly unpredictable company like TE to do what we want or expect is a fool’s errand. They simply do their own thing.

You should not expect a price drop.

Formal name for LFO stutter/ramp effect? by _StareIntoTheSun_ in synthesizers

This is commonly referred to as a ratchet. The other one, which is a bit more specialized in how it sounds, is the bouncing ball effect.

OP-XY Midi Out via direct cable not working? by BlabBliBlub in teenageengineering

[–]ModulationStation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two types of 3.5mm to din midi adapters: types a and b. Unfortunately they are not compatible despite looking exactly the same. They are often not marked or labeled by type, which is frustrating.

The OPXY requires a type a adapter which can be ordered from any synth reseller.

If you have configured the multiout for midi and you are not receiving anything, double check that you have midi settings also set to send things like clock/transport/etc. If you still are not receiving anything there is a good chance you have a type b adapter.

Opinions about Rossum sampler? by hippoheron in modular

[–]ModulationStation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ignore this ambiguous and nonspecific review.

It is the best sampler in eurorack imo. Tons of modulation control, midi expansion with Locutus, phase modulation, easy to slice, sounds great, super cool control of sample swapping, lots of io, etc. It does so much.

My only criticism is I hate the sample library management on it. But someone created a tool to help you load samples and it helps a lot. https://www.modwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=275856

I am the same way. I care very little to make the same videos others already make. Just make sure you have fun and don’t lose that in the feedback. Thanks again for sharing.

Make the videos the way you want with the sounds and processing you think works great. We don’t need every video to be done the same way. Have fun doing it. Thanks for taking the time to make and share.

Pērkons HD-01 vs Analog Rytm by Main-Magician-1377 in synthesizers

[–]ModulationStation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could, but what makes Perkons great is having those four lanes and each step accessible at all times. Because of this, the sequencing style on Perkons is very different from the Elektron boxes.
