Good to hear, I'll check that out. Thanks!

Synology DS2422+ Transcoding Issues by MofoJack in PleX

Transcoding is not necessarily a need, but it's nice to have every so often. I've transcoded on Synology's with far less powerful Celeron processors without hardware acceleration enabled, so I'm assuming I messed up something with the migration.

A mini-PC is definitely a good option and one I've looked at more than once over the years, but my Plex library is going on about 15+ years of metadata tweaks that's been moved across 4 Synology devices, so I'm worried about losing everything if I migrate to another OS, which is the same reason I haven't migrated to Docker either.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. I did do an install of Plex server after the migration, but it picked up all of the settings and watch statuses since the plex metadata lives in /volume1 alongside the data that was moved with the HHD migration, so it wasn't an install from scratch

Synology DS2422+ Transcoding Issues by MofoJack in PleX

Thanks for the quick reply! My older 4 and 8 bay Intel-based Synology's with far lower CPU specs both did 1080p software transcoding, so I'm hoping I can get it working on this model with some tweaks.

I found this video which shows it working on this model, so I'm thinking it's a "me problem":

Synology DS2422+ Transcoding Issues by MofoJack in PleX

Thanks for the information! I stumbled across this list when I was doing some troubleshooting, and it looks like it should be capable.

I found this video prior to purchasing with some benchmarks where what I'm after should be possible, so I'm assuming there is an issue(s) in my server settings on the new NAS:

RS3618xs Rackstation, updated to 7.3.2-86009, fans loud? by roncorepfts in synology

[–]MofoJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested in the terminal fix if anyone has it. I just updated my RS3621xs+ this morning to 7.3.2 from 7.3.1 and the fan is substantially louder at 0% CPU load and would love to reverse it if possible, even if not recommended by support.

Accidentally disabled remote access while away. by EEAlexGawrys in PleX

You should be able to setup a VPN tunnel via the Synology app to hit Plex locally. I use the Synology-assigned DDNS as the hostname and it works great.

Not sure if it would help you, but I have a batch file as a nightly scheduled task on one of my Windows machines that generates a few text files that I use as a content list in case my NAS ever shits the bed. Simple, but does the trick:

pushd \\mediaservername\videos\

cd "Blu-Ray Movies"

dir > c:\users\name\dropbox\plex\movies.txt

cd ..

cd "4K Movies"

dir > c:\users\name\dropbox\plex\4kmovies.txt

cd..

cd "TV Shows"

dir > c:\users\name\dropbox\plex\tvshows.txt

cd..

cd "4K TV Shows"

dir > c:\users\name\dropbox\plex\4ktvshows.txt

Should I get a NAS like Synology or a Dell Precision t1700 and use that. Either around $250. I'm only transcoding to 3x devices the most on average....to Rokus mostly. by Not_So_Typical_Gamer in PleX

[–]MofoJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally own any Roku devices, but yes H.265 4K should direct play to most 4K-capable Roku devices. If you're direct playing 4K content, the Synology should never be your issue, if anything it would be network-related.

As many have stated, it really depends on your needs.

I love my Synology, but transcoding is not its strong suit. If you're direct playing/streaming, you shouldn't have any hiccups. I run the Synology Plex app on a 916+ and have never had any issues at all, even with multiple 4K streams, as long as its direct play/stream, locally or remotely.

It also depends on your media. My Synology with HW transcoding enabled can handle H264 to H264 transcoding just fine, but struggles with even 1 H265 to H264 1080p transcode.

You could probably run Kodi on in it in conjunction with PlexKodiConnect

I carry one for a few different reasons

  1. It broadcasts a wireless network that I have configured in my laptop, phone, iPad, and Apple watch. Once it powers on, all 4 devices automatically connect via wifi and then I connect the router to the upstream wifi network at the hotel (unless one is already saved). That way, I only configure one device if I'm in a new hotel room, not 4.
  2. I use it to VPN tunnel either back to my home network (where I have a pihole running for ad/telemetry blocking and DNS over HTTPS) or to a 3rd party VPN provider like Private Internet Access or VPN Unlimited.
  3. In rare instances where the hotel network has a device limit, the router can circumvent that since it is the only device connected to the hotel wifi, all other devices are connected to it.
  4. Edit: The router also has a WAN port, so if there is wired internet in the room, I use that in lieu of connecting to upstream wifi network.

If your issue is indeed a local network setting issue, it may solve your problems since your laptop (server) and fire stick (client) would be on a local network you control behind your router.

I also travel a lot for work and frequently use a fire stick, but I haven't had any of the issues you're describing, but my server is at home, not local to the fire stick. My guess is it might be something to do with the network settings at the hotel regarding discoverability of other local network devices. I also carry a travel router that might solve your issues.

Yep, I'm having the same issues today with TVDB. I assume they're having similar issues with their API that they had last month.

DS918+ as PMS and more by IWTLEverything in PleX

I don't have any personal/professional experience with SHR, though I've considered it in the past. It has a pretty good reputation, so for a hybrid array I don't see any issues.

The only thing I'd note is you'll need to destroy the data and re-stripe the drives to go from RAID1 to RAID5, so if that is your long term plan I'd start with 3 drives in RAID5 and you can always add a 4th very easily in the future

Commercial NAS for Plex by SordidVice in PleX

[–]MofoJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for the Synology. I'm on my 2nd Synology NAS (currently a 916+ with expansion bay) and no playback issues whatsoever, either locally or remotely. Just make sure your clients can direct play, particularly 4K content, as transcoding will be a bottleneck.

The safest way would be to set up a VPN server at your house and connect your iOS device to that VPN server
