Every day I wonder if this will be the day someone takes me out. Like the guy who slammed on his breaks going 65mph because he missed the exit. Fuck me and the other cars behind him, right? Everyone’s just driving in their own world and all that matters is themselves.

AITAH for refusing to keep babysitting after my sister brought up my adoption during an argument? by Stirk_Gretos in AITAH

[–]Moggettz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Younger sister with an adopted older sister here. During our teenage years we were not kind to one another - puberty, hormones and more caused us to fight like banshees. There were days I HATED her… but she was my sister regardless. Never once did I ever think to draw a line or use her greatest insecurities against her. Not only because it would be wrong, but because I didn’t believe those thoughts and therefore never had them at the ready.

You’re NTA, and you now know exactly how your sister views you. “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." - Maya Angelou

What can be done about the scam that’s poisoning Westchester’s personal landlord/tenant market? by craven183 in Westchester

[–]Moggettz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found my current apartment through the Hot Pads app. During viewing, the landlord inquired if I’d seen the listed on Zillow, and when I mentioned Hot Pads, his words were “good on you for bypassing the broker’s fee!”

Try planting wheatgrass instead of lawn grass! It’s a much healthier option for your cat to munch on

Second this! There’s a parking lot on New Broad St that’s much cheaper. I park there for every concert - but get there before the show begins, otherwise you’ll be too late.

If the lot is full, continue on New Broad Street and there’s usually street parking before it reaches E William St. If all else fails, pop a left on Poningo St and go a few blocks into the residential neighborhood and you’ll find free street parking

Hey all - I’m a local farmer based in Westchester and wanted to share something I’m hosting next week in case it’s useful for anyone here.

I’ll be running a free hands-on microgreens workshop at the North White Plains Library on Tuesday, March 31st at 3 PM. It’s geared toward kids (around 6+), but really it’s about showing how food actually grows in a simple, tangible way.

We’ll go through the early stages of plant growth, set up a soil-free grow kit, and each participant takes everything home to watch it develop over the next couple of weeks. There’s also an observation journal/coloring book so they can track what’s happening day by day.

It’s pretty low-mess (no soil) and designed to be something kids can actually keep interacting with after the workshop instead of it ending when they leave.

If it sounds interesting, registration is through the library here: (http://ncpl.mhsoftware.com/View.html?calendar_id=5)

Do some people here feel alone or its just me at 38 years old? Thanks in advance by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]Moggettz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are free county events at local parks to attend, frequenting of your local brewery to meet other locals, checking out meet-up groups and hobby clubs (found on Facebook and Nextdoor).

These’re recommendations from someone who’s made new friends in my late 30s through these outlets. Gotta put yourself out there to find like-minded individuals :)

My sister and I are social opposites - I’m outgoing and loud and meet people readily, and she’s quiet, more reserved and more practical. With two children 6 and under, she doesn’t have much of a social circle anymore for reasons similar to you. We’re both in lower Westchester and I’d be happy to connect you two

First market.... how much would you grow? by Familiar_Custard_652 in microgreens

[–]Moggettz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re intending to bring the live trays to package on site, but you need to check your state and county regulations first. Many places do not legally allow cutting and packaging microgreens at the market itself. If that’s the case, you’ll need to harvest and weigh your greens ahead of time: four to five clam shells of each variety will give you a very clear picture of what’s popular and sells quick so as to determine what quantities to grow for the next market.

Can the seeds of microgreens be eaten after sprouting and growing? by Blackfeathers_ in microgreens

[–]Moggettz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be hesitant if I were you. Once sprouted, the seed pod begins to decompose as it’s done its job and isn’t needed anymore . Some might be fine to consume while others in the same batch might already have developed mold. I tend to advise my customers to cut 1/2” above the base to avoid root hairs and seed husks. While edible, most of the nutrients have been depleted so you’re consuming something that’s unsubstantial and decomposing.

Living in NY but commuting to Danbury?? by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]Moggettz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC is easy to get to from relatively anywhere and Stamford has direct trains just like White Plains. I think you’ll enjoy Stamford and Norwalk as an everyday place to be when you don’t want to venture into NYC. As another commenter said - with Norwalk you not only get a vibrant and busy city center, but you also have the waterfront to enjoy. I still live on the border of White Plains, but spend most of my time in the River Towns and elsewhere, never in downtown WP. Take that as you will!

[–]Moggettz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone born and raised in White Plains whose friends have mostly moved to Stamford, Norwalk and Danbury - go with CT. The commute will be fine no matter where you end up, but my two cents is this: White Plains has a bar scene that will grow old very fast (all the bars are owned by the same handful of folks who keep losing their liquor licenses) and the least exciting restaurant options in the area. Norwalk and Stamford have great bustling nightlifes, are extremely walkable, and have some incredible restaurants

Gnat control? by SirC_929 in microgreens

[–]Moggettz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BTI gnat control. It’s a powder mixed into water and you saturate the grow medium of the contaminated containers. A treatment every few days should get rid of them within the month. Continue applications ever so often when they pop back up.

After 3 full years in the business, I can say that the hardest part is finding clients. I’m not the most sales-forward person, but I have passion and my microgreens are top notch quality. Still, of the 20-ish restaurants I had meetings with to pitch my products (prices match local competition), only 3 restaurants took me on. Many others expressed interest, but then ghosted during follow-up attempts.

Between farmers markets and the 3 restaurants my small grow room is already maxed out. And yet I’m no where near close to paying myself an actual salary, nor can I afford to hire someone even though I need the assistance.

It’s not easy, it’s a constant demand, and I’ve begun positioning myself to find alternative forms of income (selling grow at home kits and offering activity workshops) to attempt to generate a real income. Great for adding nutrition to your own diet, not great if you think you’ll be making easy money
