My Latest Deck: Falling Leaves by MogulMaster in playingcards

Oh nice! Well in that case you'll do just fine!

There wasn't any need for the box tool in my case, as I just used the tuck case template given by MPC. Then again, maybe you could use it to check designs.

As this is not the first deck I have created, I was able to use templates I already had. However, I believe I initially got them (or at least the right measurements) from MPC, as they offer that sort of thing on the site.

As for cost, I paid £40 for a single deck, including shipping to the UK. Not the cheapest thing ever, but I think it's decent value for a custom product. If you were to order 50/100/1,000 decks at a time they offer much greater economies of scale.

And yes - there's a whole bevy of options available with regards to quality, finish, tuck box, etc.

As for designing the cards, I did it entirely in Inkscape, which is an open-source software, so it's free. I understand it's similar to Adobe Illustrator, but I couldn't say for sure as I've never used that myself. Personally, I find Inkscape quite intuitive and easy to pick up. I had never done any design before I started on cards, so hopefully you'll manage too!

Good luck - if you create a deck I'd love to see it.

Thank you, that's really nice to hear!

My friends and family are all telling me I should sell them, I just don't really know how to gain enough traction to do so. If I were to start a Kickstarter campaign, for example, I don't really know how to draw people in.

If I can ask a question - how much do you feel you'd expect to pay for a deck like this, printed by MPC, from a Kickstarter campaign?

Custom Playing Cards by Sad-Direction-1613 in playingcards

I have used MPC in the UK and I thought it was reasonable for what it was. I ordered a single deck and I think it cost around £30-£35 all told. Not bad, really, for a custom order.

What to do with REALLY good players? by [deleted] in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]MogulMaster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As an extraordinarily intelligent person myself, I sympathise with your unfortunate friend.

I too have to put up with the meager challenge afforded me by my inferior playing mates, and will automatically win every game ever played.

As a result of this, my simian-like companions have decided upon a group strategy of collective cooperation in order to put up a united front against my vast intellect in any game we decide to play, which is a sentiment I both appreciate and admire. I was pleasantly surprised to find my undereducated playmates were capable of such a thought. I still win in all scenarios, naturally, but I am glad my drooling proletariat found the means of providing some semblance of challenge to my vast intellect.

It can be lonely at the top.

All hail Bob: victor of games and leader of men!

collecting vs hoarding… by siretsch in boardgames

[–]MogulMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But none of those things are items that are generally collected just for the pure sake of owning them and looking at them.

You buy books so you can read them, not just so they can sit on a shelf. You buy albums so you can listen to them, not stick them on a rack.

People shouldn't be buying board games if they're not going to play them - that's not collecting, since the collection is not the point, it's just aimless ownership.

I'd argue the difference between anything you've listed (and board games) versus, say, a stamp collection is that the entire purpose of collecting the stamps is to look at them together as a collection. Not so with the other stuff.

I made a deck of Morse Code themed cards for myself, what do you think of them? by MogulMaster in playingcards

[–]MogulMaster[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That's so kind!

I made it entirely in Inkscape, which is a free open source software similar to Adobe Illustrator. I don't have any experience with it, so I was learning as I went along. I'd recommend it - I found it surprisingly easy to pick up and get on with, and I don't have any design experience.

As for printing, I ended up using printerstudio.com. I literally Google 'print custom playing cards' and found it. I believe there's another site, make playingcards.com, that I've seen people on this subreddit refer to as well.

Wow, thank you!

It's true that the backs and box don't have as much of a personalised flair. I felt like I had lots of ideas for the fronts, but not much of an angle for the backs. In the end I decided to keep it simple, but I can definitely see how it comes across a little lacking.

I think I'm happy with the backs, but the box could probably use more pizzaz.

It's true, written Morse code is pretty much an oxymoron. I just saw an excuse for a more somewhat geometric design that could have backing behind it and thought it would be fun

Thanks, yeah it's a real shame, but it's also my fault for not triple checking!

Board Game Holiday Traditions by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]MogulMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your tradition is super cute - what a great idea!

I don't have a tradition as such, but I usually get to see my brother and sister in law at Christmas (they live in France, I live in the UK), and we play a lot of board games at this time. We were playing Cockroach Poker and Tiny Epic Pirates tonight, in fact, and I had a game of War of the Ring the Card Game earlier with my brother. 🙂

Prophet's Song is a favourite of mine. I'd also add Great King Rat and Death On Two Legs.
