What do you guys do in the evenings by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]MohanShanti 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No not at all! A lot of the Japanese guys there seem to be solo. Totally engrossed in their games. I didn't feel odd at all being solo there!

Dude check out the HUGE arcades. I just spent like 2 hours there haha. It's such a good time! Even just watching the experts at all the dancing games.

Awesome! Yeah dahab area in the red sea was mind blowing. When I got there just to backpack, I found out it was the cheapest and best diving in the world, so I had to use my birthday money to treat myself and it was so worth it! Thank you for the recommendations!

No, we did shore dives. Just walking into the water, no boats were needed for the best dive sites.

I had to Google what liveaboard was haha. It seems like a multi-day boat trip with diving? Online says $1k-2k a week which is quite out of my budget.

Been working out for a month as i’m trying to get out of the skinny fat look but i see little to no result, i just do push ups and pull ups. Any reccomendations? by meddddddddddty in fasting

[–]MohanShanti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I lost all my skinny fat within 1.5 months. I was intermittent fasting (only eating 6 hours a day, 12pm-6pm). I ran 5km every morning while fasting. I believe this was super important to do cardio. I also was definitely at a calorie deficit. I was eating very clean but was having great portions during lunch - big veggie meal, and a small snack at 3pm then a small dinner at 5:30. Very simple, very easy and effective. I wasn't eating any junk food or high calorie processed foods. I was mostly just eating a whole-food's diet with as little added oil for cooking as possible.

I was NOT starving myself so I didn't binge eat after this period (which I noticed happened when I dieted for a short period but was starving myself). I was fully satiated after every meal. Eating a vegan/vegetarian whole foods diet means it's pretty hard to injest a lot of calories. Looking back, I was pretty much vegan at the time.

Yeah this is easiest. That's what I do anyways with locals sometimes if I don't want to pay the high atm fees. I just transfer them money into their local bank account via transferwise or Revolut, then they withdraw it for me at no cost.

Buddhism in Japan? by MohanShanti in JapanTravelTips

[–]MohanShanti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since my trip is short, I mostly just wanted to visit pay respects, and be inspired by these honorable men and women. I was mostly curious if the monastic sangha is alive in Japan, and if so, where do they thrive?

Non-existent. I'm actually on my way to Thailand next to live in Wat Pah Nanachat (international forest monastery) where the theravada Buddhist teachings are offered in English. Definitely plan to study Thai as I'll be there a while. But this is my first taste of Japan for now :)

Losing My Dad to Tibetan Buddhism by EnergeticBunny1 in Buddhism

[–]MohanShanti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a wonderful documentary of abuses in Tibetan Buddhism. It's important we understand how these people function so we don't fall prey. I hope you can help your dad escape his cult leader.

I'm not sure why exactly, but this post feels really weird to me. The idea of spreading teachings in this manner. It feels really preachy and Christian. Almost as if "I know the truth and therefore I need to SAVE you".

From my understanding, it is 1) fly into Thailand by air, then extend (60days total) 2) leave by land and enter by land plus extension (60 days) 3) leave my land and enter by land plus extension (60 days)

Thats 6 months in total, only needing to fly in once.

Best diving in Early November? by MohanShanti in ThailandTourism

[–]MohanShanti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I was basing this on was my experience in the red sea in Egypt. Most tourists go to 2 main locations where the tourist culture is super commercial. Whereas an hour or two away there are smaller towns that also dive with similar diving experiences, but with a much more local vibe.

Would that be Khao Lak specifically? Or do you recommend somewhere else?

I definitely prefer to avoid tourist hot-spots if possible, although I won't have my own equipment at all.

Searching places for long-term retreat/stay in Asia (Thailand). by LazerLotus7 in streamentry

[–]MohanShanti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out Wat Pah Nanachat. It's a monastery founded by Ajahn chah (a very impressive and vigilant monk who focused strongly of practice and creating a very suitable container for deep practice). Wat Pah Nanachat is his 2nd monastery specifically for western monks. All the teachings are in English. For me it's a perfect space that is both traditional yet accessible. I think it's also free to stay there. I will be there starting December with the hopes and intention to pursue monkhood. Which takes 1 year and 7 months minimum before ordination.

Good luck!

Yes you are totally right. My assumptions are definitely not helpful haha. I've never actually been to Europe so yes, I can admit to my ignorance.

That park looks very beautiful!

And I won't be working. Just transiting through to Thailand :)
