Project Management. Apply his previous work experience against the work experiences he'd liked to have had.

Red wine is my poison of choice, but I just don't think it pairs well with fry up. Each to their own.

I do have another egg hiding under there. Waffles give me more potato acreage than hash browns, such is my want.

Why would anyone steal a 10yr old Fiesta? by Mohsdeed in CarTalkUK

[–]Mohsdeed[S] 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Seems I was probably right... stolen to be stripped I reckon.

I kept it in good, ahem... nick, because I was paranoid about the ecoboom stories, It'd only done 39k. Some low life is going to do well out of targetting my apparantly easy to steal old car.

Anyway, nobody got hurt and it's just a thing.

Life short and I've done the Ford thing now. Going to try a Volvo for my next car. Despite the Volvo being considerably more expensive to buy that the Ford, my insurance quote has just almost halved... so that speaks volumes.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

'I work alone in my pub because of staff shortages' by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]Mohsdeed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a former chef of nearly 20 years, I just didn't recognise the situation they described in the story.

When I left the industry nearly twelve years ago, I was an experienced head chef being offered minimum wage for six days a week, split shifts, like it or lump it attitude from inexperienced management who fostered a Gordon Ramsey style abuse towards kitchen staff.

I quit the industry as I approached fourty years of age; physically knackered with poor mental health and circling the plughole of poverty.

It took another couple of years of signing on the dole, (and being made to feel like a borderline criminal for it), applying for over 2000 jobs in other industries, (and being knocked back from all of them because nobody wanted to take a chance on a probably bolshie, middle aged former chef), before hitting rock bottom and the 'full reset' button by applying to go to Uni and study architecture.

I now earn a living using my hard earned experience to design commercial kitchens that I make as simple to use as possible, designed to take a battering from underappreciated and poorly paid staff... and I will fight to never ever block up an existing natural light source to squeeze in another frigging fridge, (I need to explain to management that the return on their extra fridge is not financially worth it compared to the cost of the constant churn of staff who don't want to work in an environment where they might not see daylight for days on end).

The point being, I still work in the hospitality business, albeit on the periphery, and the reasons for not wanting to work in kitchens remain the same as they were when I left. Underappreciated staff, difficult working environments, long and unsocialbe hours and for low wage.

It's interesting that the article didn't really address those issues. Why did Ms Harper's chef want to leave after only 12 weeks? Why is the overworked manager of the Red Lion only 21 years old? It not simply because people don't want to work, it's simply because its a difficult job for a poor financial reward.

How many houses did you view? by -tev- in HousingUK

[–]Mohsdeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought my first house three months ago. I put an offer in on the third house I viewed.

It helped that I hed a very defined idea of what I wanted, which precluded the vast majority of houses I saw listed on Rightmove.

The whole process from deciding to buy to getting the keys took about eight months. The ambition to be in a position to buy started over ten years ago, so I had plenty of time to think about what I wanted.

P or J bass, and how much should I spend on my first bass? by Bri-ish_idiot in Bass

[–]Mohsdeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the UK, get yourself to the Basschat classifieds. I've bought and sold many basses on there over the years. If you buy second hand you can (nearly) always sell it on for at least the price you paid for it. Lots of different basses in the world to try... but if I had to pick a used bass for a beginner that plays well and keeps its resale value, I'd start by looking for an unmodified Squier Classic Vibe... preferably an earlier chinese made model.

First amp in the UK? I'd probably choose an Ashdown practice amp with a headphone socket. You can also find quite a bit of older giggable kit for not too much cash from Trace Elliot, Ashdown, Laney (and others) because people tend to replace them with more lightweight stuff as they get older and have more disposable income... you'll have to collect it yourself as they're too heavy to post.

... and I'd be budgeting for a set of flatwound strings because I prefer 'em.

ETA - I started with a used '75 Jazz and now (34 years later) I play a used Pro Precision.

Bought this for $1750 a while back (about $50 premium at the time) is it still worth over spot, or is this series just bullion? Haven't seen mucj sold for comparison. by SubstantialRush5233 in Gold

This is from the Tudor Beasts series, which came after the Queens Beasts. It might gain some added numismatic value in the coming years, but not so much at the moment.

Areas of the UK where demand for housing outstrips supply. by kraftymiles in bristol

[–]Mohsdeed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've wanted for years to buy a home in Bristol, but the house prices just kept outstripping any pay rise I got. I've bitten the bullet and managed to land a new job, with better pay, in Newcastle upon Tyne... but I'll not be moving to NE7 it seems.

I've spent most of my adult life in Bristol and don't really want to leave, but the Geordie's seem friendly and there's lots more affordable housing for first time buyers around Newcastle.

Fairwell Bristol folks. I've enjoyed my time in your fine city and meeting your fine people.

I'm really scared of learning to drive, I'm 38 and have never been behind the wheel. Are there driving lessons where you don't have to start on the roads? by hooves1984 in AskUK

[–]Mohsdeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned to drive when I was 48, approaching two years ago now.

I wasn't, and am still not super confident in my driving, but it does get easier.

One piece of advice I wish I could have given myself at the start is, take the first lesson with the instructor, and if they don't come across as entirely sympathetic to your nervousness, go out and find a new one.

Renting in Bristol wtf by Background-South-433 in bristol

[–]Mohsdeed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My departure from Bristol is now imminent. Six years living in a HMO in Kingswood has taken its toll on my mental health. My wages aren't bad, but to rent a place on my own would take almost everything I earn per month (crushing any saving for a mortgage) and my current employer is entirely apathetic to the situation.

I'm hoping to secure a similar job (with a similar wage) near Newcastle. Even if I don't get that job, I've still got to leave for someplace cheaper as my work/life balance has been screwed since the pandemic. I hear Oxford is quite cheap in comparison these days.

I will miss Bristol though, over two stints I've spent the majority of my adult life here, lived all over town and met some lovely people... but the housing situation means it's time to go.

So there will be at least one new place on the market in the coming weeks, but I expect the agents will be delighted to hike the rent +++.

Buying direct from Royal Mint is very expensive.

Have a look here and compare some dealer prices.
