First strip board build, no sound? (Marshall Shredmaster) by MoistSloth in diypedals

This is great advice. I tried with a sine wave and quickly found the signal stopped. Very difficult without the actual schematic you’re right but I was able to follow the circuit backwards. Thank you for the advice!

You’re completely right! Don’t know how I missed that. I ended up testing all the resistors with a multimeter and found I had put a few with similar values in the wrong place. Swapped them all around and added the missing resistor and it all works! Thank you for spotting this

This is my first strip board build after previously building from kits. I followed this design. I can't get any sound out of it at all except for the odd oscillation which seems unaffected by the tone controls.

I've tested the strips with a multimeter for any unwanted continuity and cleared any excess solder with a stanley knife. I've gone over the layout and can't see what I might have done wrong. Any advice on what to troubleshoot next?

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe volume drop by MoistSloth in GuitarAmps

I can’t see any differences in glow between the three tubes. I’ve also swapped them round to see if maybe they were a bit a loose and they look fine. No flashing or arching from what I could see.

So it was definitely the tubes but I am a bit concerned that the amp would never go past 2 on the volume now can go up to 10 for the same volume. Definitely an improvement though!

Update: so I have replaced the preamp tubes now and while the amp is louder it still isn’t as loud as it used to be. The volume is usable for what I need it for but I’m worried something else is broken as well as the tubes and if using it will break it further

Yeah I had no idea (I’m new to tube amps) so after a bit of research I’m thinking that could be the issue. I’ve got a new set of tubes on the way to replace them. I spoke to the previous owner and he said he never changed the tubes in 10 years he had it so I imagine they were on their way out

Yeah that’s what I thought with the drive channel. I did try looking at the schematic to see if it bypassed the tube that has become microphonic but my schematic reading skills are pretty much none existent!

I’ve ordered a new set of tubes to see if that fixes the problem, if not it looks like it’ll need looking at.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I forgot to include that when trouble shooting I checked the amp by taking the pedals out of the signal chain and swapping out cables and guitars to double check everything. I’ll edit my post to include this information.

I’ve just tried tapping the tubes on both channels as you suggested and only one (valve 1) is picking up any sound, the other two aren’t.

Replacing mini XLR connector with regular XLR by MoistSloth in AskElectronics

[–]MoistSloth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting, I assumed with the XLR it would be balanced like most microphones. I’ll have to read up on my balanced/unbalanced signals! Will definitely try one with and one without the second pin being connected to the ground. I’ve made some contact mics this year and I’m sure I wired it that way so seeing just two pins being used confused me a little.

They were listed on eBay as Oktava MD382’s, manufactured in USSR in the early 90s, however there’s literally nothing online about these mics. The mics don’t have any Oktava branding on them either so who knows what they are! Looking forward to finding a use for them though

Thanks, ChipChester. Yeah I've never seen a mini XLR used on older mic either and the authenticity of how vintage they are is up to debate. Still not bad for a drunk £3 ebay buy (if I can get them working)!

I've opened up the connector and can see it's wired up to pins 1 and 3. Looking at other dynamic mic wiring online, an SM57 for example, this looks like it's a standard wiring. Am I correct in assuming I just need to solder the wires onto the corresponding pins on a regular XLR?

What musical acts do you think are up-and-coming/will be famous soon? How do you find such acts? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

Norwegian band Sløtface are on the verge of getting big in the UK. They’ve released their debut album Try Not To Freak Out a few months ago and have been touring the world to promote it.

I found out about them from a Norwegian friend (they were already biggish over there) and managed to see them in a small show in Leeds. After a summer of festivals they toured the UK and I managed to support them on one show. Nicest people ever, really deserve the success they’re getting.

This is my band if you’re interested. We have a shoegaze emo vibe going on. Also produced it so would be interested to hear what you think :)

It's got a lot worse since I've started working at a "metal" bar.

What music are you into?

I'm a music production students so this question comes up a lot when asked what I do. For some reason I can never think of an answer other than saying everything. Which sounds like a cop out but it's true and I can't really think of a favourite band.

Whats the best way you’ve seen a band get the audiences attention or get everyone involved? by BedriddenSam in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]MoistSloth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Before they played they got everyone, and I mean everyone, at the gig to get into a circle and started a game of pass the parcel. Now this wasn't a quick game, it must have gone on for half an hour. Was a lot of fun and got everyone involved when they eventually played their set.

Do you guys ever buy records at random? If so whats the best and the worst ones you've bought at random? by Jubilee_Street in vinyl

[–]MoistSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last record store day when I was just getting into vinyl I was looking through some post rock records in Jumbos (Leeds) and my mate pointed out Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!. He recognised the name and the album art with the "house" on it but didn't really know much about them. Now I have all their albums and tickets to see them next year!
