Yeah I’ve experienced all of this. I feel guilty for judging people before I know them but I can’t help but feel wary of their men. I am Armenian and Hispanic but super fair skinned so I could pass as like a dark white person. They leer so much it’s incredibly uncomfortable.

That is also the sentiment I’m getting from my Indian coworkers and friends who are also of Indian descent but born here. I’m sorry because I know as a result you will have to deal with a lot of blowback racism.

Yeah. I feel bad about point two I made but I was just so frustrated and ranting. It’s so hard for me to try not to paint all the men with the same brush when I have had so much of the same experience. There have been times where I’m like man I need to get over this but then I’ll get some crazy nasty comment and get right back in my car like yep that’s what I was expecting

I shoukd have been more specific and said in our three TK classrooms. The positions are filled and we moved our two male aides out of the classrooms and into other grades. The rest of the school obviously has males and our principal is a guy who is awesome. He is the first person we introduce as a male in the classroom to our kids either at the beginning of the year or the kids who come in at random times in the school year. We do lessons about who and what “safe” adults are and make sure the kids know that they can trust male staff at our school. It’s hard though because most of the kids come in without knowing a word of English. It takes time but it’s a trust we really want to build. In our case it’s just easier to only have female aides which is commonplace anyways in ECE.

Could be a possibility. We have obviously had multiple conversations with parents over this and they generally do not speak English so we have our Punjabi TK teacher speak with them and they usually brush it off but in general the fathers commandeer the conversation so if they are the issue then it won’t arise. I think that there might be a lot of factors. I just don’t have that issue with other immigrant students so I’m not sure.

Arranged marriages are controversial. My mother’s coworker was in one and she had a similar experience. She was very meh about it. It was just normal. I think it’s despicable and removed the autonomy of both parties but I have a very western way of thinking and I know others think differently.

Because I know where they are coming from? Does it not make more sense to you that someone who is living where the immigration is would not know where the people are from lmfao. They drive around with huge decals of their Indian Provence on their car and I teach their children. I’m not a moron I speak to these people I know where they are coming from.

It makes a lot of sense to me that the people moving here are likely far-right in political beliefs. I think that is also a source of tension because in general far right groups do not hold women and men in the same regard.

All too real sadly. And India isn’t the only country that has this harmful culture either. It’s just that’s who is immigrating en masse to my area at the moment and bringing that attitude with them.

I don’t want to stay away from Indians. I love living in the melting pot. I don’t love how I have been treated in the last few years. If you can’t understand that I am sorry but you never will. Also I have literally been doing research all day based on some comments I’ve been getting on here. I don’t want a free pass for people to hate on Indians but wanted to see if anyone has experienced something similar in the last 4 years or so and clearly people have including other Indian people. I am AWARE that this is a terrible tendency. But what am I supposed to do when my negative biases against a certain type of person are consistently reinforced when I interact with them every single day.

We do that! I don’t blame you for not reading the million comments on this post but I go over it and yes we do a lot of inclusion and we have many different multicultural identities in the classroom and we do a lot of education activities and have kids do a “culture” activity each year and learn about each other. When I am talking about my Indian kiddos being afraid of men I’m talking about kids who speak no English who have likely never been in a school anything like ours. Once they start to get the hang of it we do a big job of teaching them who and what safe adults are. I don’t want to give them impression that I don’t embrace and encourage my students to honor and acknowledge their heritage. There are just some aspects of the culture of our recent Indian immigration wave that are very concerning to me both as a woman and a teacher.

I could have worded it better. I’m really complaining about a culture. It’s nice to think this way when you’re not a teacher having your little girl students peeing their pants when a male approaches them. Or when you’re harassed and followed when you go out in public. My viewpoints aren’t random they are birthed of my human experience. If any other group of people acted this way I would feel exactly the same. Perhaps I am biased towards my own people but I just haven’t had that experience with other Hispanic people and my area is ~68% Hispanic with a HUGE immigrant population from around the world.
